Apple today added 20 new Flyover locations to Apple Maps on Mac and iOS, highlighting new cities and landmarks in the United States, Austria, Denmark, Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Spain, France, Mexico, Sweden, Puerto Rico, and Japan. With the new additions, there are now more than 150 Flyover locations available in Apple Maps.

For those unfamiliar with the Flyover feature in Maps, it lets users see photo-realistic 3D videos of select areas, which they can zoom, pan, and rotate through to get a close up look at notable landmarks and points of interest. Some of the locations below were previously available as Flyover destinations, but have just been officially added to Apple's list of Flyover locations.

Here's a full list of the new Flyover destinations:

- Graz, Austria
- Aarhus, Denmark
- Rotterdam, Netherlands
- Bobbio, Italy
- Turin, Italy
- Budapest, Hungary
- Cádiz, Spain
- Chenonxeaux, France
- Dijon, France
- Millau, France
- Nice, France
- Strasbourg, France
- Omaha Beach
- Ensenada, Mexico
- Loreto, Mexico
- Gothenburg, Sweden
- Malmö, Sweden
- Mayagüez, Puerto Rico
- Sapporo, Japan
- Rapid City, SD

Flyover was first introduced alongside iOS 6 in 2012, and over the course of the last three years, Apple has been steadily adding new Flyover locations to the Maps app. As of February, some Flyover locations have been updated with real-time animated landmarks, making the Flyover experience more immersive, and many Flyover locations have an additional City Tour feature that walks users through different landmarks.

I don't get why Apple keeps trying this Maps thing when Google already has a maps application. Come to think of it, Google has its own mobile OS, so why bother with iOS? They have their own CEO, too, so what's the point of having Tim Cook around?

Apple should just become Google instead of pursuing things as crazy as marginal improvement at a steady pace. :p

With the Commonwealth Games in 2018, hopefully the Gold Coast, Australia will get its own flyover.. Nudge nudge

Fair points, but I think it's worthwhile for Apple to do its own thing, as it can differentiate to keep control of its destiny.

I don't get why...

Because Google wouldn't let Apple have access to advanced mapping features unless they agreed to some disagreeable terms.

I don't get why people are questioning why Apple is working on maps. Google doesn't have a monopoly on maps just because they got started several years earlier. They weren't even the first. Why did Google start doing maps when MapQuest, DeLorme (and probably others) had already started?

Ironically, I was parodying the questioning of Apple Maps that you and I don't understand. I thought I made it clear by ramping up the absurdity and finishing with the line in which I used the word "crazy" to describe "improvement at a steady pace". Oh well. :)

Budapest isn't new. It's been available for at least couple months before. I remember that because I live in Poland and I was surprised that such small country has Flyover and Poland doesn't ;-)

Flyover. I'll remember to fire up Apple Maps when I learn to fly a plane.

Can you explain the joke? I don't know why you'd want a 3d representation of a city on your phone when you're flying a plane over that same city. You could just look out the window.

I can assure you that anyone who actually read your post got it. :)

Omaha Beach is an interesting addition which I'm intrigued to view, if only I could "find" the flyover option for it.

That's something I've always found a bit arbitary with these flyovers - how to access them. For example, if I search on "Graz, Austria" in Maps on my iPhone, there at the top of the screen is a nice big "3D Flyover Tour of Graz" button banner. However, if I search on "London, England" I have to tap on the pin label and select the "Flyover Tour" button. And most cities you'll get 2 or 3 search results for the same city - it then seems to be a matter of luck whether you choose the actual one that Apple have associated with the flyby.

But whichever search result I'm clicking for Omaha Beach, I'm not seeing a flyby option.

N.B. to the article author - it's in France

I agree.

It would be good to have a list of all the Flyovers in the Maps app that you could simply tap on to instigate the flyover, rather than having to hunt and peck the city or typing it into the search bar for every one and hoping it appears.

It's strange how scattered this is. Like, one of my nearest cities doesn't have it, but we do up on our rural mountainy village.

I guess we were on the landing path for the FlyOver planes.
