LG has started supplying Apple with OLED displays for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, according to Korea's ETNews. It's unclear how many orders LG will split with Samsung, which was the exclusive supplier of the displays for these devices until now.

The supplier diversification reduces risk and will likely allow Apple to negotiate lower costs in the future, as LG and Samsung compete for orders.

It's unclear when iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models with LG displays will start being shipped by Apple, but it's unlikely that customers will be able to notice a difference between models with LG and Samsung displays. Apple has routinely relied on multiple suppliers for some other iPhone components, ranging from storage to batteries.

iPhone 14 Pro displays use low-power LTPO technology for ProMotion, enabling a variable refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz. The display can also ramp down to an ultra-low-power 1Hz when in an optional always-on display mode.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus displays are reportedly supplied by Samsung and China's BOE.

I thought that there were already LG panels in some of these. Glad to hear otherwise. So now it really is a screen lottery.

Great, both LG and Samsung are great display makers and fitting to supply for iPhone Pros assuming they meet quality demands.

The LG OLED division should be better by now, but they are nowhere near the current state of Samsung's OLED quality and reliability.

I bet they are mainly using them as leverage to negotiate better prices with Samsung. Penny pinching Timmy.

Pretty much. LG has been trying to be a supplier for *years* and keeps failing quality checks.

Maybe we'll see the article about a person returning 54 iPhones until they got a Samsung Panel :D
Yeah unfortunately that’s probably going to happen. But only if there really is a noticeable difference in quality. Let’s hope not. But I do remember LG making a terrible hash of Pixel 2XL displays.

That's what I was thinking. Will there be some way with the SN or such to know which panel? If it's bad enough to see with the naked eye, then that is bad

As long as the LG displays don't come out green-tinted like they did a few years back (I think it was the XS/Max).

If it’s bad enough to see with the naked eye then return it. I don’t think anyone should return it just on the basis of the manufacturer alone, despite the Pixel debacle, because Google screwed up their calibration, too. It was supposedly intentional but the end result was a mess.

My first 12 mini and 12 Pro had displays made by Samsung but had a very severe issue with being unable to display blacks in photos and videos when viewed in a dark room. I got shades of gray green instead. The problem with this is I was watching a night scene in a movie. The setting was supposed to be rural but the background looked like a large city. There was no such background. The “city” was splotches where shades of night sky was supposed to be.

I should have returned both phones but I thought it was a software problem that would be fixed in an update. It wasn’t. I did eventually trade both phones in. I did get a flawless 12 mini as a Mother’s Day gift and I still have that one.

Also, I’ve personally owned as well as seen many Samsung phone displays afflicted with a pink splotch problem. Samsung makes fine displays for phones but they’re not without problems, themselves.

So lesson learned, judge the results before your eyes rather than relying solely on brand reputations that may not hold up in actual practice.

to the discerning eye, I'm sure Samsung is the one to get.

Glad I got a launch 14PM and won panel lottery on top of it.

Love LG's WOLED tv panels but theyre definitely inferior in the mobile space.

You're probably right, I might actually wait until iPhone 16, I want to see how this USB C thing play out.
Year after year, you wait for “something more” from Apple with these iPhones. At some point, your vigil will inspire a short story or a poem. 😉

Meanwhile, you seem happy enough with your iPhone X. And I know people using even older iPhones. I kept going back to a Pixel 2, myself. So sure, why not wait for iPhone 16?

Not only will it be beneficial to see how the USB C things plays out, but if Apple does use a periscope lens for the first time, it’s not just a matter of introducing new lenses, but also the software to make use of them needs to be just right and there will be the usual things to work out like Samsung had to.

There are a few apps on the App Store that will let you know like Lirum (full version). If I get a 14 Pro, I’ll definitely look on the forums to see if there are any issues to look for that aren’t present with Samsung panels. LG has definitely been less reliable than Samsung with quality on their smaller panels. Does Apple have some internal quality monitoring system in place that compares the quality of panels sourced from various panel manufacturers on all units shipped so any discrepancies in quality that could be visually discerned by users can be flagged?
