Apple Adds PayPal as Payment Option for iTunes, App Store, and Apple Music

From today, PayPal customers in the U.K., Australia, Canada, Mexico, and the Netherlands can use their PayPal account to pay for App Store, Apple Music, iTunes, and iBooks purchases made on their Apple devices. PayPal said on Wednesday the option would be rolling out to other countries including the U.S. soon after.

Previously, Apple users were only able to pay for transactions using a registered bank card or gift card. The new option means it's now possible to make purchases across iPhone, iPad, and iPad touch and Mac using a PayPal account. To select PayPal in the payment method options on iOS, go to Settings -> iTunes & App Stores and tap on your Apple ID, then select payment information. The same options can be found in iTunes on Mac or PC via the Account Quick Link.

Once users have updated their account settings for the above services, all future purchases made with the customer's Apple ID will be automatically charged to their PayPal account. This includes purchases of apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books, as well as Apple Music subscriptions and iCloud storage.

The new payment option brings PayPal's One Touch service to Apple accounts for the first time, meaning users can purchase from all Apple devices including Apple TV and Apple Watch, since they don't have to sign in every time they want to make a transaction. PayPal said the system provides a "secure and versatile payment method to meet the growing demand for digital entertainment."

A welcome addition here in the Netherlands. Ever since clickandbuy went away and credit card is not really an option for most people here (myself included) there was no real in-store alternative here. Hoped for iDeal but paypal is good enough.

Though it might be a bit late since many shops have come in and sell iTunes cards where you can get an additional 10-15% for free.
 
Hallelujah, took them long enough. Haven’t purchased anything in the App Store for over a year, due to ClickandBuy shutting down last year in April.

I think I lot of people are under the mistaken impression that Apple is trying to get into the payment business in order to dominate it. It's simply not true. Apple Pay exists only to give users one more reason to buy an iPhone. The same goes with the upcoming Apple Pay via iMessage. It's not because they want to handle all those micro-transactions. They simply don't want users leaving iMessage for other platforms the offer payment solutions. Plus they may gain some users when friends say "if only you had an iPhone, I could just send you the money that way."

Just out of curiosity, why not just use a regular debit card? Here, in the U.S., we're not required to use a credit card and debit cards are accepted as a form of payment on iTunes and in the App Store.

Is that not an option in iTunes/AppStore where you live?

Nope, not every debit card is supported. I have a Maestro card (owned by MasterCard, confusingly enough). This card is very common in Europe. Imagine this: ever since I had my first iPhone in 2008, I could only use ClickandBuy (which I never saw being used anywhere else, I had it only for iTunes). Even many small, foreign web shops offer a whole range of payment options nowadays. Apple is still thinking in the age of credit and gift cards.

Wow, I had no idea it was so different outside of the US. I've only ever used a debit card for all of my iTunes/Apple Store purchases. I'm glad this new PayPal feature will make things convenient for you!

Tell you what, it told me to pound sand when I used my PayPal account recently. Said it must be a US based bank. :(
 
Does iTunes and PayPal have to be in the same country?
F. E. Will I be able to buy U.K. movies with a Swiss credit card backing my PayPal account?

I hope PayPal fails as a company. I hate PayPal. My account has been compromised multiple times. Worst place to store bank information ever. Don't do it.
