I'm interested... I know a lot of folks don't use the pencil (apparently), but I use them all the time. Daily on my iPad Pro with Procreate and Astropad to interface with adobe Illustrator. My daughter uses my first gen iPad Pro and 1st get pencil for drawing, but also to help the iPad function like a digital whiteboard for portions of her online learning. I'm super interested in what they could do.

I would absolutely love an "eraser" on the end like Wacom has done.

cursor hover support (like wacom) would be neat :)
a physical command button on the side would be cool too but Apple would never lol
otherwise I'm not sure what else they can add to it, even the extra pressure levels/"""reduced latency""" that Wacom advertises in their new generation styluses are just marketing fluff at this point.

Yes PLEASE. Cursor hover is pretty much the only feature missing for me, compared to Wacom pens.

This is the device I am most excited out! Here is my wish list for the 3rd gen:

-Mini-LED screen
-FaceTime call capable
-Dedicated OS (pencilOS)
-Dedicated pencil App Store
-1TB storage option
-A15X processor

I would also like to see a black color option, but that’s a moon shot.

Still using the 1st gen pencil or shall I say still haven’t used my 1st gen pencil? Can’t believe I paid real money for it! $100 for a pencil, how stupid am I? $1000 for an iPad then $100 for a device to operate it? Unbelievable.
oh really? That’s too bad... having used Wacom tablets (got a bamboo and a Wacom intuos pro), the feeling and experience of an iPad Pro and 2nd Gen pencil is hands down the best of them all by a large margin, personally at least. It’s a joy to even just annotate stuff like screenshots taken on the workstation Mac and they appear on the iPad (no need to sidecar it, it just has to be close) ready to scribble in it.

Have, and like, the 2nd Gen. Not sure what a 3rd gen could add? (kinda like what is the difference between a Dixon-Ticonderoga today vs 30 years ago?) 🤷‍♂️
There was this feature being discussed about capturing colors by pointing at something (so maybe a camera?) and who knows what else, 3D positioning too? Like those VR apps where it’s possible to “paint” in the air, but that was pulled out of nowhere...

You can be sure there will be 2 to 3 exclusive features that are only compatible with iPad Pro 2021 + Apple Pencil 3rd gen. just enough to convince me to upgrade. *sigh*

I’m still rocking a 2nd gen 12.9 pro. I use the pencil each time I use the iPad - and I was wondering if there might be a new pencil this year. Excited to see what is new, and make my upgrade choice. I did cave and order a new magnetic sleeve for mine after the one I had split and is oozing grossness. Since it arrives tomorrow, I figure this leak was aimed at me. 🤣

Older gens had a silicon tip to cover the sensors attached to the pen itself. In this "leaked" photo the sensors appear to be on the removable tip. Meaning the tips will cost way higher when you need to replace them.
Well played Apple

I use my ipad every day for work and a main part of it is the pencil.
TBH I have no real complaints with the current one and love the feel and finish of it. I really hope it doesnt change much.....
but any increase in accuracy and feel is good with me.

Any news?

Would the reveal it only at an Apple event? Is the next one in september?

Wondering if I should really get a Pencil 2 for my iPad Pro as the pencil 2 is 3 years old.

It's not known when or how it would be announced. Getting one now depends on your needs. If you need one right away, go for it. You can occasionally find an Apple Refurb (under Accessories) for $109 USD, and resellers sometimes might have them on sale.

Thank you WildSky.

I saw that Gen.1 was released Sept. 2015.
Gen.2 was released Oct. 2018.

So it has been almost 3 years. I will wait till September/October and hope for the best.

I currently have a Logitech Crayon. It is surprisingly good for how I use it. It’s getting a little old now and the battery isn’t what it use to be. Every once in a while there are killer deals on Crayons and Apple Pencils on Amazon. I have price watches set on camelcamelcamel and will buy whatever is reduced next.
