I wonder if the iPad mini will support all the new multitasking features.

It feels like the screen is too small for any kind of multitasking other than the occasional PIP video or 2 apps side by side in split screen.

Also 4GB of RAM might not be enough for "Mac-like" multitasking.

They think doing this will make everyone start liking iPadOS no thanks maybe start with giving it pro apps and make it not a blown up iPhone, most people don’t need more than split screen

Don’t know why everyone wants a tablet to be a Mac so much. Steve Jobs said himself during the iPads introduction that the iPad is a “third category device between a laptop and a smartphone”:

Just buy a Mac if you want a Mac, otherwise you’ll never be satisfied because you’ll just want them to add something to make it like a Mac, then another thing, then another… etc. You are forever chasing after something to be something that it was never intended to be.
That was also 12 years ago, the iPad has had some serious leaps and bounds since the original and is heavily marketed as a "laptop replacement" in many cases.

Meh, what Jobs said at the intro demo 12 years ago doesn’t mean much today. And honestly it doesn’t need macOS, it just needs a handful more features from macOS (monitor support, file management, and Automator, if I’m being greedy) and I’d be totally good.

For sure it will be exclusive to the M1 Powered Macs, even the non M1 Ipad Pros will be left out for sure. Although the RAM issue is BS. There is a jailbreak tweak floating around for years that allowed multiple resizable windows. It worked very well on an old iPad Air 2 for example, given that due to the small screen size there weren’t that many apps open at the same time.

Hope this is true - I would love to have a viable alternative to my Surface Pro 8 instead of a big iPhone. This would be a step in the right direction.

Until the recent introduction of M1-based MacBooks, the iPad filled a very important "almost a computer" slot. Mainly because Intel Macs were so terrible at battery life.

Lots of people want a laptop where they don't have to proactively remember to shut it down/charge it on a daily basis. They want the functionality of a Mac, but the "instant on" and all-week battery life of an iPad.

The M1 MacBooks almost get us there, but for true portability and the "consume content anytime, anywhere", the iPad is still king. So adding more functionality to the iPad (i.e. resizable windows) is still a useful feature for many, because it fills even more holes than a M1 MacBook can.

Especially when people are spending more $$ on an iPad Pro with keyboard case than they would on a base model MBA.
Why use and iPad and wish it was a Mac? Just don’t buy an iPad.

I don’t need window resizing really. I need a decent file manager and apps that speak between them. For example: an easy way to compress or expand a file (maybe from an emi) and open it in another app (like excel), currently it is a convoluted process.
I have a shortcut to compress and email a file, but is not so evident for people that you can do that.
Maybe Apple could include tons of shortcuts by default in the file manager or in the “share menus”, maye have a much more mature “actions menu” or “workflow actions menu” and more visibility about where you save stuff.
Also I would love a calculator app.
And MY choice of browser tech, not just “based on Safari browser”.
And a decent mail client that resizes tiny fonts automatically.

Finally I can hopefully put all the extraneous performance of my 2017 10.5 iPad Pro into use after 5 years!!!

There's lots of potential. iPads are more portable and compatible.

Times have changed. The iPad doesn't need to be stuck in the pastimited by its software, considering the hardware.

i hope this is a complete rebuild of ipad OS.
multitasking on ipad right now feels like a hodge-podge workaround on a scaled up phone OS.
MacOS in contrast was built from the ground up for multitasking, that's why the M1 Macbook Air is arguably the best computer Apple makes.

It's like the iPhone war of 2006 again. Do you scale up the iPod OS to make a phone or do you scale down OS X?

today, rebuilding MacOS to run ARM is winning against scaling up the iPhone OS.

I'm torn by this... on the one hand it's very welcome. But after MacBooks went M1, I really don't use my iPad as a "laptop" anymore. Sorta wish they would go back to the "tablet" roots and really innovate more in this space. I really do want a *third* device that is different than my laptop and my iPhone as Steve Jobs presented it.
I’d like to not have 3 devices to get my daily work done. Of course, Apple does want everyone to buy multiple devices. :)
