Only five so far, but just wait until more thieves find out about this idea thanks to news outlets posting speculative articles.
I have to ask, does the benefit of informing people about this seemingly minuscule (as of now) issue outweigh the cost of the inevitable increase in AirTag related thefts by making this information public?
This is called "security by obscurity." It's better to be proactive about these things than to hope that more people don't figure out the security hole.

I think the problem in using AirTags this way is they start beeping and give away their location 48 hours after being separated from you.
I can say that AirTag hidden in both, my car and my backpack are never way from me for 48 hours.....they are either at home or, in the case of the car, in the commuter parking lot for 8 to maybe 12 hours

This usage seems to revolve around only using them to get a home address. If one starts beeping in 48 hours, the car owner may find it then but the thieves will already have the address. Maybe the homeowner is on a bit of extra alert for a while if they know about this kind of story. However, they eventually resume normal life. Meanwhile, the thieves still have the home address and can do their deed at ANY time.

In some ways this is like personal info database thefts. Immediately after the theft, nothing typically happens. But then sooner or later something may happen. When announced, everyone with potentially compromised information may be on a bit of added alert. But then- when nothing happens for a long enough period of time- we resume normal life.

A seemingly big issue with this approach is that the super car to be stolen by these means probably has a garage in which it is regularly parked at night... probably inside a gated community... probably a secure gated community... possibly within localized secure grounds too. A super car probably has a pretty impressive anti-theft device(s) too. So spending $29 to identify the address doesn't seem to offer easy pickens for the thieves. It would seem it would be much easier to steal it from wherever they are able to access it out in public. Instead of inserting a tracking tag, just get on with the theft there.

The thieves could also save themselves the $29 by simply targeting richer neighborhoods. Drive through those in the late evening (if they can get into them), notice which cars they want obviously parked out in the driveway instead of already in the garage, come back and get them whenever they like. I think that approach has been used for up to all of the time that cars have existed.

Expensive cars worth stealing don't exist only in rich/gated neighborhoods. Think of all the Ford Raptors and other high-end pickups purchased with zero interest 7-year loans sitting in middle-class driveways. The trackers may also be a way to know when that owner is not home and an easier burglary target.

Right but as a wannabe (rich) one pays up for a car/truck, they are likely to be going out of their way to better care for that vehicle. Even if I go back to poor college day income but find some way to afford a Raptor or similar, I'm not going to park it on the street or in a driveway. If I have nothing better than that for taking care of what might be my most valuable asset (for which I'm deeply in debt to have at that time), I probably don't buy that kind of asset yet.

Airtag jammed into a slit in a car will have no way to tell thieves if owners are home or not. For that, you would need to get more airtags jammed into the owner(s) themselves, so the thief could see that owner(s) are away from vehicle. And even then, how does the thief know that untagged grandpa/grandma is not home with a shotgun and an itch to prove him/herself useful.

Well, that blows. Apple hurry release the Apple car, ASAP.

Because that won’t fix anything about the topic at hand…

5 out of 2,000 ... I'd like to see the statistics that show this 'link' is actually significant ... Sincerely, a scientist. This indeed is rather click-baity and I wouldn't even be surprised if those 'news' were paid in part by the competition ?

Can Apple CarPlay notify the driver about a suspect AirTag? Most newer vehicles are getting CarPlay. Car Play could alert an Android user.
CarPlay is powered by the iPhone, probably not so helpful to those with Android. I like the comment about Apple adding an Android app to locate tags.

Obviously the apple id/ icloud accounts associated with those tags are fake, but apple is still going to have info that can be released to the police and that creates a paper trail. Seems like a really dumb plan.

Well said. A thief might also glue their iPhone to your car - same “issue” at the end of the day.

Apple is all about privacy. Think of it as an Apple Pay? It’ll be encrypted?

Nothing will stop attaching a physical tracking device to the car. You make no sense.

That's ironic. I use one in my car precisely to avoid a car theft and track down a potential criminal.

This may honestly backfire on Apple a lot if it becomes too hot, I just hope they don't cancel AirTag altogether.

In your case the irony would be on the thief once you beat them with their own weapons. ;)

If anyone tracks my car, I will shoot him in the face. This is the first and last warning.

In other news today,
non-tech savvy Car Thieves, have to use the age-old but antiquated method, of actually having to surreptitiously follow that Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., back to the owners driveway.

The police have encouraged these car owners to stop pretending they look so cool and instead, be extra vigilant watching the rear view mirror, for that one car on the crowded highway, that has been tailing you since you left the art auction.

Police also do not blame any corporation or technology, for these thefts. They place 100% of the blame on these victims for being too egocentric and wealthy o_O ...better known in Police Force terminology, as a "Natural Born Target"

Well said, but at least this fake news creates some outrage somewhere on the web.

The thieves are already spreading the idea among themselves. Better that the public also knows so that they're more aware and use bluetooth scanner apps to see if they're tagged. Sunshine is always the best disinfectant.
No, the thieves looked into this, saw it was way more expensive than the stuff they can get elsewhere and paid no attention to it. If this is getting spread to anyone who didn’t already know, I’d guess it would be YouTubers. We should see in a few weeks! :)

Convenience always comes at a cost. We are a technological guinea pig generation.
Every generation has been since the invention of the club.
