A iMac “Pro” is not really needed with the Mac Studio better serving that group anyway. However a larger screen iMac for those who just want larger than 24” would still be very welcome.
Agreed, an iMac "Pro" with M1 Max/Ultra that is analogous to the Mac Studio/Studio Display isn't something that makes a ton of sense, and it's more power than most probably need.

What apple does need to fill though is a desktop option for the M1/M2 Pro. Something with a larger screen (27") that offers the M1/M2 or M1/M2 Pro would help fill that gap. Not convinced that they will do this now that they Studio Display is an option but it would definitely increase the options and price points on the desktop side.

Apple is already working on an iMac that features the "M3" Apple silicon chip, alongside development on at least nine new Macs that feature the company's next-generation of Apple silicon, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported.
Since then, I've heard that the M2 chips aren't the only ones in testing within Apple. And if you're waiting for a new iMac, I'm hearing an M3 version of that desktop is already in the works—though I imagine it won't launch until the end of next year at the earliest. Also, for those asking, I still think an iMac Pro is coming. It just won't be anytime soon.
Gee we already have inside information about M4 based iMacs in the future, you're too late Mark!

For Gods sake bring back a 27 inch model.Every movie or tv show that takes place in an office has one on the workers desk. Why would apple not realize how much they are needed in the market place?
Apple is just playing games, obviously they didn't want it released in March because so many would have never bought a Mac Studio + Studio Display if offered the choice of a M1 Pro/Max configurations for a 27" iMac as an alternative.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman has said that work on an iMac with an M3 chip is already underway, but specific details of the iMac, including whether it'll be a follow-up to the updated 24-inch model or a larger model are not disclosed. Gurman added that an iMac Pro is also in the works but that it won't launch "anytime soon."
Last week, Bloomberg reported that Apple is hard at work on a host of new Macs destined to be released throughout the remainder of this year and early into 2023. The new Macs include a revamped entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 chip, a completely redesigned MacBook Air, and updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips.

Apple is rumored to showcase its M2 chip later this year, which will be the company's first significant addition to its Mac Apple silicon family since the launch of the original M1 chip in November 2020.

The baseline M2 chip, expected to power the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air, is rumored to include the same 8-core CPU as M1 but with speed and efficiency improvements. As for GPU, the M2 will consist of 9 and 10-core GPU options, up from the 7 and 8-core GPU options in the original ‌M1‌ chip.

For a full roundup of everything we know about the M2 chip, see our guide.

That’s all well and good. But by the time I get my 16in M1 Pro I’ll have been waiting for close to 3 months. I hope they manage to get the M2/3… out faster than they are managing with the current lot. The supply chain issues don’t appear to be going away soon.

Nothing new here. Definitely an M3 version of Mac will be developed. Apple will be internally testing products much before launch. With M2 not yet launched, M3 based Macs will be launching towards 2023 end or even early 2024.

Before M3, iMac based on M2 should probably be launched. It may be in early 2023.

Would like to see Apple bring back 27” iMac in the future possibly also in a non Pro variant, starting at $1999, considering Intel based 27” iMac started at $1799.

Gurman added that an iMac Pro is also in the works but that it won't launch "anytime soon."

If it’s not going to launch anytime soon, then it’s just like the many other projects in development that may never see the light of day.

Without more substance, he’s just fishing for page views.

I have a breaking revelation to report as well...

The iphone will eventually be getting rid of the notch, followed eventually by the Mac Book Pros.

M2 same as M1 with the absolute least improvement to be able to justify calling it a new product cycle and milk out consumers.

Wake me up if there's a 50% improvement somewhere along the line.
Or a new 27 inch iMac...

I think Apple is overvaluing the CPU. There is a HUGE iMac market that wants a larger iMac and would be fine with M1 performance. Delaying its release for years and years to provide cycles that most of the market will never use is disappointing.

Maybe the situation in China explains why we still don't have a 27" iMac... At least I hope so. I'm eager to replace my late 2012.
