I know that. Why do you think you need to tell me that?

And it doesn't matter what's in the top 100. Some random Joe could be downloading one of Samsung's apps to control his tv and that could be the 50B

SHERLOCK.

Of course that could happen, I just pointed out that your "bet" is useless, statistically. The chance of a popular app winning is larger than an app that is being downloaded once or twice altogether, that shouldn't need a Sherlock to understand (I hope).

(Unless you assume that Apple is manipulating the "winning" App - but then you surely would have said so. I won't read any implications into your post :) )

at 885 apps per second I am curious as to how they conclude which was the 50bth app, and if it can be legally claimed to be valid or whether it is in fact a lottery drawn from a pool of a few thousand.

No - not manipulating per se - but how audited would they actually be on the 50B.

That being said - my initial comment was sarcastic.

Pfft, Android hit 50 billion pirated app downloads like 6 months ago. ;)

You're funny. This thread has nothing to do with Android. You are one to quickly point out how many posters are seemingly anti-Apple/Fandroids or whatever you want to call them. And yet you are a prime instigator of such noise when you post things like this.

Are you desperately linkbaiting for electronic high-fives (upvotes)? Or are you deliberately looking to get into an Android vs iOS discussion on this thread?

I know nothing about the backend, but each purchase has an order # attached to it, and logically each new app download would have it's own # attached to it already, on their end there is no reason why each # couldn't be sequential and easily traceable. You don't need to figure out when each person clicked "Buy" (that wouldn't work anyways) just what order the server responded to first.

I'm guessing they want to reach this milestone in time for June's conference... looks like they will.

Keep buying those apps!

Some of you are forgetting the iTunes credit is also tied to the Mac App store. You could be getting every new OS X update and Pro Apps like Final Cut and Logic Pro for the rest of your life for free too.

Just curious, wouldn't it be possible for the winner to say, make their own app and spend the $10k on in-app purchases so all the money comes back to them as a developer's check (after Apple takes their cut) and just cash in the check? I know that's a crazy tedious way to circumvent the system but for those that probably won't ever spend that much money in the iTunes store it would be worth it.

Based on my calculation, the number will be reached on May 13th between 12 PM and 5 PM.

You can always tell what is the absolute finest quality by how many items get sold.

You want the finest apps? The AppStore sells billions, so they must be the best!

You want the finest hamburger? McDonalds sells billions, so they must be the best!

You want the finest computer OS? Windows sells billions, so it must be the best!

That is the only way that this campaign makes any sense whatsoever. Apple has brilliant marketing! /s

Or you know, they are just pinting out a milestone. I don't think they mention anywhere how "quality" the apps are. Just that the store is hitting a big milestone for them. What is the big deal?

That's ok. You're lucky that the "As usual, Samsung/google are mentioned on the first page of comments already"-crowd didn't show up :D

Why do they choose to use lame facts like with 50,000,000,000 steps you can walk around Earth 800 times?! Who said anything about steps?

Just don't forget to pay your taxes. :)

"winner is solely responsible for all applicable taxes"

If you win the $10,000 Gift Card you have to pay income taxes out of your own pocket. That means that the $10,000 Gift Card prize will cost the winner around $2,500, in actual real dollars not gift card dollars.

Don't use apple.com if you want to win, because it's always several thousands behind the numbers on the iTunes app.

"With 50 billion dollars for r&d we could actually create some components in house instead of relying on samsung to make them for us and we could even become innovative again by bringing some new products to market":D

has anyone realized the counter on Apple's website is flawed? The 10,000th place increments when the 1,000th place reaches 9 instead of 0? Actually, I just checked it again as I am writing this and now I dont see it anymore. Hmm...
