i can say my calls are clear and very few dropped calls, but the speed is slower
only 993kbps damn At&t!

How about the rest of the World!

I am glad for the folks in major urban areas that have struggled with drop calls and bad service getting help, but it seems that it in part has been at the expense of smaller cities. I am in a college town- Greenville NC and STILL no 3G Service! Been waiting, and waiting!

AT&T keeps saying it is on the way, but then pulls the money and the crews to fix problems in other areas.

I want my 3G- that I pay for monthy, but rarely get except when traveling!

thats a bummer on no 3g i dont think i would even have got a iphone if no 3g service,it would have been worthless and edge so dog ass slow. but here in my little town lucky to have it. Paradise,ca

My biggest complaint about 3G

My biggest complaint, and only complaint is ... IT'S NOT DEPLOYED HERE!

I am not in the boonies ... check the 3G map for Michigan. I think one word describes it ... and that would be pathetic.

Earth to ATT ... alert, alert ... it's 2010, not 1910.

Its surprising that this didnt happen before. I am now pretty happy with my phone. I am not sure whether it is because ATT has gotten better or because I am now used to the mediocrity.

Utter rubbish!!

Here in Boulder, CO we get constant dropped calls and generally crappy download speeds. The most annoying thing is getting notification for a voicemail hours after the call, a fantastic bonus feature especially those using it for business.

So many people I know are absolutely pissed off with their service, $107 per month for what!! No, wait this is over a billion dollars a month from iphone users and they still can't add a few more towers. The fix is simple, just install a few more towers or beef up the existing ones. Look what happened at SXSW, they simply rolled in a mobile cell site and magically AT&T was the star of the show, no more problems like they had in 2009.

Let's put that in terms of how cheap and stingy they are. Let's say a cell tower costs a million dollars to build with equipment etc. A million dollars out of a billion is the same as one dollar out of a thousand. AT&T is not willing to spend a one off fee of $1 out of the $1000 they get every month to fix my problem!! Some folk love their service, so no, we don't have to build tens of thousand more towers, just the places that have dropped calls. AT&T, just look at the logs and see where 80% of all calls get dropped (hint hint, Boulder, CO) this is not rocket science chumps.

Last week I downgraded my plan to the bare minimum in eager anticipation of dumping them.

But they won't cos they are lazy. Boulder is 100k tops so why should be so hard.

Sorry for the unibomber manifesto rant here but yes I am mad  ....end of rant ......
and no I don't want to fanny about by unlocking the phone .. .etc ... I don't even care about slow data, I just want it to work as a simple portable two way voice communications device ie cellphone.

Unhappy in CO

Mine is no better

My iPhone performance is no better. AT&T still drops 25% of the calls I make.

I live in manhattan and ive been on iphone since day 1- what ive noticed the last few months: connection IS slightly more consistent. I find myself dropping from 5 bars to no signal slightly less. However, the speed is consistently unimpressive. I run a speed test in some fashion just about every week and it averages in the high 600's kbps. I have 4000 rollover minutes so I'm really only interested in good data, and for 95$ a month I'm just not getting it. I'm waiting til june to do anything because from a business standpoint, whether its Verizon or not, Apple WILL have to open itself to another network just to stave off the people jumping to android. But there is no way i will stay with ATT. They've sucked my wallet dry enough for the last many years. I am a fan of Sprint's simply-everything plan.. so that would be my preferred place to land.

try a different speedtest. the results vary depending on the test

I REALLY hope to see a Verizon iPhone this summer. That said, I'll probably stick with AT&T since my service has been solid here in Richmond, VA.

It's becoming clearer and clearer that AT&T won't do a damn thing to improve their infrastructure unless fear of competition forces them to. How long have we been waiting for tethering now?

AT&T is totally overloaded in San Francisco. 4 Calls Failed yesterday. What is interesting is I was working downtown on Saturday and my phone worked a lot better. I even got a call out while waiting for Muni. Guess as it was the weekend there are less people around.

The only thing that will improve this situation is an Verizon iPhone. It will be good for everyone.

Overall, I have seen an increase number of bars in the past few months. However, this has had no result on the number of dropped calls and missed calls I get. I currently live in Cincinnati (not exactly a tiny or overpopulated city).

Could any of these supposed increases in connectivity have anything to do with the possibility of less iPhone users in certain areas vs "upgrades" to the systems from Android competition? Just wondering.

San Francisco service still lacking

I've had a 3GS since they were introduced and I haven't noticed any meaningful improvement in San Francisco. The same dead zones for voice and data still exist, at least where I try to use my phone in the Castro and Buena Vista Park / Corona Heights. 17th Street west of Market is a complete black hole.

In the Financial District, I am often unable to connect to the internet despite showing a 3G signal. If I can, the download speed is often miserable (especially in the afternoon on weekdays).

When I am in another city, such as Chicago or Miami, the service is consistently glorious. It's a shame I have to leave home in order to use my iPhone to its full potential.

Garbage

iphone is the best device, but the absolute WORST phone in the world, I drop calls several times a day. So now i have the wonderful and exciting situation of having a Blackberry with Verizon and my iphone jammed up my pants...

Good for Apple for trying to help AT&T! Now that praise is done - bring the iPhone to TMobile and Verizon!

Actually you can already use the iPhone with T-Mobile. It's my understanding that their network runs on the same architecture as AT&T's. I'm not sure about 3G service though.

>make the improvements which end-users have been asking for....easy battery swaps, multiple apps running in the background, etc.

Outside of the MacRumors forums I never hear iPhone users around me mention these things.

And /. :) but people in the real world don't really care. I've probably had 7 cell phones in my life, I've replaced a battery maybe once, and only in one of the phones. I guess if you keep our phone for 4 or 5 years then that becomes an issue, but really, are there people who are going to be happy with a 1st gen iphone a year from now? Give me a break.

Multiple apps? 95% of people don't care, they click something, they use it, they close it and click something else.

To pay out all of that money to AT&T and not receive decent service in your local area is unforgivable in my opinion. You might want to check out Verizon's MiFi. It's a device that converts Verizon's 3G cellular signal into a WiFi signal for up to 5 separate devices, including iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads.

3G Network Performance

Nothing is going to change at AT&T until they get better trained, competent employees. We were without 3G service for two weeks. The outage affected thousands right in the middle of Los Angeles. On three occasions tech support called to tell me there were tower problems but they'd been resolved. They hadn't. It took daily calls from many people who were told there was no record of anyone complaining, despite many of us having open tech tickets. One of my work colleagues was even told to get rid of his iPhone and get a Blackberry; by and AT&T customer service person!! Service was finally restored yesterday after hundreds of hours of wasted customer reporting time. How many others all over the country are having similar experiences? We need better choices.

No changes for me

As soon as Verizon (or Sprint, as long as it's CDMA) gets IPhone I'm jumping this sinking ship..

Useless...how weak

That's right AT&T allow Apple (a real company) to come in and solve all of your problems...b/c you've proven yourself incapable of handling the network load brought on by the iPod and other smart devices. Seriously, I mean how much time have you had? If your network is unable to handle the load, then don't enter into exclusive contracts...basically biting off more than you can chew. Good ole' corporate greed is what has lead us all to this point. AT&T...FAIL.

Could be better in DC

I've only had the iPhone for a year, but I haven't seen any improvement in DC in that time. If anything, I'd say it's gotten worse. Not many dropped calls, but there are certainly too many deadspots in high density areas.

As for someone's earlier comment on acres in the metro, that is actually something that is totally under the control of wmata, not AT&T or sprint or t-mobile. If I remember the development plans correctly, all underground tracks and stations should have 3G access by the end of 2011, or sometime in 2012.

Cheers,

DCBass

If you live in People's Republic of Boulder, then you should know how difficult it would be to convince neighborhoods there to allow the telcos to build anything as gaudy as a cell tower. Want the service but NIMBY!

I live in San Jose and go to school in Cupertino, (yes, the same Cupertino as Apple headquarters) and I get almost no coverage on or near campus. I too use my iPhone mostly for data (when I can get it.) I have so many rollover minutes I don't even look any more. Thankfully, I didn't upgrade to the 3GS so I am free to jump and I can't wait for the chance.

In every article I've read about at&t and the iPhone, at&t comes off sounding arrogant. I remember a month or two ago, an executive was talking about "reeducating" iPhone users about data usage. I'm tired of spending $95 a month for that kind of service. I wonder how many customers at&t is going to lose when VZW (or any other provider) gets the iPhone.

yup its pretty sad. I feel like no matter what ATT is doing, there WILL be a mass exodus of people as soon as we can get this phone ANYwhere else. Even if it came to t-mob at this point that would prob be enough for me based on how much they are working on expanding 3G with their network. Even though its crumby at times from what i hear.. its still cheaper. ATT is giving me 50$ a month service at a 95$ a month price point.
