My response was 100% factual, and I refused to be dragged into your OT discussion. Clearly, that is the problem you have with my response.

In the eye of the beholder any given response would be 100% actual....

IJ Reilly, you misunderstood me. Nobody is dragging or forcing you in any way to participate in any discussion, you're more then entitled not to react or to leave a discussion as it is, that’s up to you to decide. I’ve no „problem” (strong word) with your respons but I did disliked your tone of voice using misplaced contempt quoting: "Strange as it may sound to you, I confined my answer to the actual question. You should try it sometime.". Besides the fact it sounds arrogant to me, it simply doesn’t add anything to any given debate i.m.h.o. My 2 cents. Let’s leave it here.

If no issues with you as a person and I don't think we could add something value to the "discussion" we had.

Based on this topic I can recommend people to read "The Net Delusion: The Dark Side of Internet Freedom" by Evgeny Morozov. It's brilliantly written and gives the reader a good inside about the state of privacy issues in the world we call the internet. It's rather disturbing to read, but very informative.

I didn't misunderstand you at all. I added value to the discussion by simply answering the question that was asked, and not trying to pull any other thoughts, ideas or feelings into it. What you think of my "tone" matters not at all to me if only because that kind of accusation is a classic evasion and certainly adds nothing to any discussion. No sale.

I have nothing to hide, and no legal reasons for them to read mine anyway. But of course people are going to get paranoid and freak out

Don't be so narcissistic, this is NOT about you being so good. It is about the criminal activities of Apple, MS and Google. It is bad and should be illegal to read customer emails in any circumstance.

I don't care if Apple reads my email. It's mostly junk.

this is how we got here... people don't care...

Yes, it's pretty clear to me you don't care. So, we agree to disagree. Have a good day.

Very well put.

I think in a way we should't really be too mad about it, eMails after all are as secure as an open letter, since most of us send them unencrypted. However it is not the nicest thought to have, considering doctors, lawyers etc. use GMail and iCloud for their communication… but that is more their problem than Apple's, Google's or Microsoft's. It isn't rocket science to encrypt eMails or just run your own damn server if you really have to.

Obviously. If this is news to you, then get off the net. Go write your letters, because the post office can't open those right?

Well, if the Post Office or someone else opens up a letter, it is a FEDERAL crime...unlike email where they (be it Apple or anyone else) can do what ever the hell they want with it.

The bottom line: it it is done electronically, privacy does not exist.

I'd be surprised if they had agreements saying they don't read them and still did it anyway.

When I first thought about this I disagreed but I've thought about it for a few minutes now. If consumers knew Apple/etc. legally could not read them then I'm willing to bet someone somewhere would ensure that they don't.

That being said, how would one go about doing that?

My answer was for the person who thought Apple might be able to read all the email on his computer and was wondering if he needed a different email client. The answer was no, you don't need to be that paranoid.

As the original person, I do appreciate the clarification.
I don't know that I'm paranoid about it, just curious. I really have no idea what happens to any email I send, much less an email I send from an outlook account via an apple client that has full access to the outlook account. I'm also not willing to really do anything to change/prevent/adapt to anything. I generally take the "I ethically prefer this wasn't something that happens, but I don't feel personally threatened" approach.

Paranoia is its own reward. Some people seem to get a thrill out of believing that some unseen person or group is anxious to read every word they write. They imagine themselves to be that important, I guess.

Any time you push an email through a mail server, the potential for someone else to read it exists. Knowing that, I choose not to worry about it, because the potential for that to happen, and cause me any harm, is a far cry from a great many real cyber security risks that face us every day. You know, the criminals who want to steal our identities, and such. It's just a matter of keeping a proper perspective, really. I try to ration my worry to address the stuff that really matters.
