It is a shame they are not building the new manufacturing plants in the US.

At least they are expanding their Cupertino campus and they did build the server farm in North Carolina.

Apple partnering with another company?

This never happens. The rumor is clearly bogus.

The source article seems to have been updated after MacRumors posted the link to say that the new production lines will be at Sharp's factory in Mie Prefecture - which is in Japan.

China, Japan, Taiwan - still not U.S. manufactured. Times change, Hong Kong seems to be the new financial strong hold that was once NYC (perhaps debatable, but many personal family/friends have moved or travel for their work when NYC was once their place of work). Point is, very little is made and sold in the U.S. America once led in science/math and product quality many, many decades ago. Sure I'm a hypocrite as I own many products from Pioneer, B&O, Panasonic, and Apple (made in China), there are very few products that meet the qualifications most need. Now that it seems China owns about half of the U.S. economy, it seems the tables have turned and we have become lesser players in the world market, mere consumers spending our money overseas without producing anything to compensate our consuming or to play in the market.

Just thoughts, I'm certain I'm wrong on some points, and I sincerely hope I am as I want things to change/improve, for everyone.

Might it be a factory for no-glasses 3D displays? Like the ones that will come with Nintendo 3DS this March? These screens are also made by Sharp if I'm correct.

In China? NEGATIVE !!! Not in Japan like Sharp or Toshiba, Not in Korea like Samsung or LG, Not in USA like .... why is it in China?

BECAUSE IT COSTS MORE TO MAKE PRODUCTS HERE AND MANY PEOPLE WONT PAY THE PRICE. I know it would be nice, but wishing doesn't make it so. Next time, we have to make sure we vote into office people who will fix up our economy so it can be cheaper here. Ranting about it solves nothing, and I'm tired of explaining it. Next time, maybe we shouldn't vote for people who suck at their job. Just a thought.

It may not be true. Samsung and LG is doing well in S. Korea.

I missed this comment. Do capitals make a point more valid?

PS As others have already pointed out, it is not that simple.

The title of this article is so stupid. Apple isn't building anything, sharp is the one building a factory. Apple doesn't build anything anymore they're the kings of outsourcing.
As for Sharp their TV's are overpriced garbage and always have been, but they do look like a giant ipod touch.

Forgive my rant, but I'm sick of everything being built in China! Why not here? Why not give companies a tax incentive to build new plants and employee Americans? It's been noted that employees in such Chinese based companies are now generally earning more than the average American worker

/end rant
Hmm Foxcon raised monthly pay from 140 to $290/month I somehow doubt that is more then average American worker

And did the cost of an Apple product double as they raised pay from slave status to poverty level? No, because there is just a few minutes labor involved.

3D iPhone?

If it turns out that it is Sharp (manufacturer of Nintendo's upcoming 3DS displays), my boyfriend points out, perhaps we'll see an iPhone with a parallax 3D display after the second half of 2012.

You are making an unfounded judgment regarding where I shop and what I buy. In fact, I am just the opposite, I spend more on products that I research to determine where and how they are manufactured, its impact on the economy and the environment, which usually means I am spending more money. I don't shop at Walmart, Bestbuy, Target, etc. I refuse to, and will spend extra money on purchasing products I know are either American manufactured and/or sold in local small businesses (ex. Tekserve in NYC for my Apple needs). It has nothing to do with spending money, I am fortunate enough to have the ability of purchasing products at any price point (I recently purchased a Pioneer Elite KURO before Pioneer officially ceases manufacturing of their panels as Panasonic purchased the company, and point, Pioneer does make THE BEST plasma systems, or did).

So no, it's nothing to do with my inability to shop in various price markets. It's the fact that many goods purchased in the U.S. are manufactured in China, then disposed of in third world nations.

Read "The Story of Stuff", it is very enlightening on American capitalism, how manufacturing overseas began (it is not just saving money but other nations have lesser environmental restrictions allowing companies to pollute without penalty), and the impact of our garbage disposal on other nations (e-waste from cheap, disposable electronics have been polluting the water and causing cancer and other diseases in which they are dumped).

Have to say that I totally agree with you and avoid purchasing products from China, Taiwan, India and all of the other child labor countries. Build the factories here, employ more Americans who will in turn spend more for the products made by Americans. Support child labor and it will always be cheaper at the childs sake!!!

Disappointing.

The HTC has an OLED display, and Apple wants to invest in a manufacturing plant for yesterday's technology?

The iPHone has lost in test in regard to phones with an OLED display (like the HTC), and I was hoping for an OLED for the iPhone 5.

I am surprised that so many poster here do not know that OLEDs are not "around the corner" but actually being used in smart phones competing with the iPhone.

I heard from a guy who heard from a guy that Pepsi and Apple were going to join up and design a soft drink cell phone device. The story will come out then the rumor will switch to Coke being the company! :D

You must have a perverse sense of humor.
I don't think Steve would would want to work with Pepsi people again.
At least not with hiring and firing power.

Oh and Nokia already have a drink powered phone design.
