It’s fine. I hate how it picks up a whisper across multiple rooms when I’m trying to talk to my iPhone right next to me, and it yells at me about how I need to use my iPhone instead.
I really wish Apple would let us use different names for invoking Siri on different devices. Siri on the HomePod can’t always do what Siri on the phone can but the HomePod is always eager to grab the request first.

To anyone on a budget who is considering a Home Pod mini, please don't waste money on such low quality sound. Instead, for something close in price, the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 offers much higher quality sound:

As of this writing, Amazon is selling it for $116.49 with free shipping:

i dont think you 'get it' but thanks for the 20 year old rep lol

the homepod does more than act as a speaker. so your suggestion only plays for someone looking for 'only a speaker' and particularly one where sound quality is the priority.

Which... okay, but thats not what you said. And some people buy homepods, but dont use them as primary speakers at all. If you're really on a budget, dont buy either thing. You dont need them.

Maybe one day they’ll be useful. Still no reason for something like this to be locked down. Alexa can do everything it can do and still operates with thousands of other devices and programs.

I wish Apple would develop a home security system that integrates with HomePod.

Use iCloud for the video footage with cameras.

There are other DIY home security systems. But Apple can integrate the system with ALL Apple products.

Seems dumb they have not come out with one by now.
Ever heard of Ubiquity (ui.com)? The team that worked on the apple wifi routers started that company up after Apple stopped making those devices.

They have the most incredible networking devices (very apple like) including gateways(routers), smart switches (with software assignable ports), wifi access points, electronic door access, EV chargers, IP Phones and CAMERAS - they all integrate beautifully and are ultra reliable. Their cameras are bad ass and they have tons to choose from.

Definitely check that out as you can build a secure smart home with their stuff. Their apps work great with iPhone, iPads and Macs.

Its a rabbit hole when you start looking at their stuff and how it all integrates together...

EDIT - I forgot the best part... all of your footage from the cameras are stored locally on one of their devices (the gateway or another device they have) and you can access it remotely with the app for NO CHARGE. There is NO monthly subscriptions or any of that nonsense. This is how it should be.

I got one for Christmas last year and love it. I play my podcasts on it while I’m working from home. Was thinking of getting three more this holiday season maybe sooner.

Lots of companies make compatible cameras, and there are good ways to roll your own. I think what is missing from ubiquiti's options is an 'alarm panel'. These sort of solutions exist and work well: https://konnected.io/

and otherwise, they are still making a point that first party options are scant. apple is not ubiquiti, despite 'having heard of them'

I have a pair of them, but my experience has been plagued by connection issues, drop-outs and unreliability in general. Wished these came with an ethernet port.
It would be interesting if they were PoE and didn’t have the non-removable power cable at all.

I used to get the dropouts. But now we can set which Apple TV is the main hub. And it is Ethernet linked. I have had not issues.

"Santa" brought my son a HomePod mini. The idea was that it would take his M2 Mac mini gaming audio to the next level. What "Santa" didn't realize was the HomePod mini's latency would be so awful that using it for gaming audio would be a complete no-go. This is one of many reasons "Santa" drinks.

I had this issue for the longest time, it was the worst.
Who’s speaking solved. Use the button on my watch or iPhone to awake Siri. I have both with me almost 100% of the time. Push button, no need to say Siri. Button, play, skip, turn on, etc. Never fails.

I’ve got nine of the original HomePods, and when they work, they’re fantastic. Unfortunately, iOS is pretty hit or miss when it comes to getting them to work consistently. Ironically, I get much better query responses, and reliability with my three Google hubs/displays. 🤷‍♂️

Google knows how to keep their in home wire taps up and running!
😂

(mainly joking -- agree w/ you about reliability and consistency)

The anniversary of a secondary-product in a product line? Slow news day, eh? lol

Wait… no. It’s not even the anniversary of a secondary-product in a product line. It’s the anniversary of the announcement of a secondary-product in a product line!!! 😂

Santa shoulda bought headphones!

This right here. I've got one sitting on my desk, mostly for HomeKit. Right next to it is a bluetooth speaker for my Mac to output to when I don't want to send audio to the larger audio system. Why can't I route Mac audio out to the HomePod easily? Seems like a no-brainer.
This is where Shortcuts are handy

I’m a huge fan of ubiquity. I used to have Google nest wifi which would require a monthly restart…such crap. My UniFi set up is rock solid.

When introduced, Apple advertised using Siri to play Net radio stations. This is the only way I use them and I bought 3 in total, one as a present. A year later this feature stopped working and I (we) have been stuck ever since. Very unhappy.

i mean 'stuck'? i clicked the link. clicked play. chose my homepod and here i am soaring though a spiritual cosmos. dont be left behind. dont give up. siri is a false god.

Don't think a new one is coming out soon and even if a new one is indeed coming, not expecting much to change. Probably some new colours will be available.

I have two in use, plus one of the original full-size models sitting unused/in box. Trying to sell that one, but no luck.

Really like the mini's. They don't sound as good, but the thread coverage and integration with YouTube music makes up for it.
