Was seriously considering dumping Netflix until I read that HD titles cost more.

Ugh. I would think Apple wouldn't play the "penalize the HD users" game. HD should be the new standard, not some sort of special high-end price.

So I guess I'll still wait for a cheap blu-ray player and stick with Netflix, who will send me HD discs at day of release for no extra charge.

havent' been to a video store in a while but does Blockbuster etc charge more for HD titles?

Did I hear the exec right? The newest movies will have an iPod compatible version on the DVD, then renting via Netflix will allow you to copy the movie to iTunes, forever. Is that a smart thing to allow?

The Family Guy DVD has the iTunes File on its second disc...I do not think anything but the file is on it, so Netflix will not ship that disc to you, nor will they provide the code.

Not only is the digital copy on a separate DVD/CD, but you need a special code located on an insert that accompanies the DVD to transfer/unlock it... this code "redeems" the movie, and it appears to "download" from the DVD to your computer, enabling the normal DRM that accompanies iTunes video downloads. All that said, there is still nothing stopping you from ripping the DVD and creating your own digital copy in any case... nothing except your conscience, of course.

If I was deciding between Sky and AppleTV, there would be no question that I would choose :apple:TV. It seems like a good thing to have on a Friday evening when you are chilling out and there's nothing but chat shows on, and you can't be bothered to go to Blockbuster, because Sky like Freeview has nothing of real interest on 90% of the time. My problem is that I don't have a widescreen telly and from my understanding you need one to make use of the :apple:TV (although I don't understand why this is a strict requirement - is it really?). So this is a good few hundred pounds I would need to get set up before I start renting films and I have a good university cinema within walking distance that shows all manner of films from box office smashes to arthouse. Therefore, I think the additions to :apple:TV are great and that it now has every reason to take off - as long as people understand that it is now computer-free and it gets into the high-street shops, and is demonstrated properly - but the financial outlay at the present doesn't stack up for me personally. I also worry about it making people even more reclusive and that it will compete even more than video, satellite and digital has with cinemas.

Why do so many people think this makes any kind of a difference on the value of the AppleTV (worthless)

I own one, and it does NOTHING that I can't already do on 2x2 other devices in my house - and misses some things I can do on those other devices (divx). I can rent from Microsoft or Amazon unbox - I no longer have ANY desire to buy ANYTHING from iTunes as there are better alternatives out there.

Who would buy videos on this service (ok i can understand a tv show here and there if you miss it)? I mean you won't be able to keep it through the future. By all means I'll rip to h.264/x264 but My xbox 360's can play those.

So what, flickr integration makes it worth while?

I just don't see this as a value at all, and I own one - and It's sitting in a box right now (i was hoping there would roll a better update)... i just have no reason to use it at all with tivo's and xbox's.. and frankly for 70$ more the 360 is a better buy... unless you live in a cold climate in which case the ATV can be used to heat not just your house, but the neighborhood... yes it gets so hot were I to touch it it would BURN me.

Useless bloody device that they should either kill or open support for. This is by far the worst piece of hyped crapware I have ever fallen for (and i thought i'd grow out of falling for them, but it caught me!) This is not the ipod of the tele without support for the mp3 of the video world - divx

The only video I have seen in Divx format are all pirated ones. I have no intention of downloading videos from the net. However, I do use Handbrake to rip my own DVDs so that I can play them in the AppleTV. I also use eyeTV to export to AppleTV format so my daughter can watch all the PBS kids programs that I have recorded. Also, AppleTV is totally silent while XBox sounds like a jet engine. For vast majority of people that don't play games, AppleTV is a better option than the XBox360. And, XBox 360 consumes a lot more power than the AppleTV. AppleTV consumes something around 25 to 60 Watts. The reason it gets hot is because it does not vent that fast.

Actually, it gets hot by design. The outer case is the heatsink. I wish I knew that befor placing my Mini on top of it the first time I fired it up.

Actually, I the real reason I wrote in was that I'm getting antsy - when is the 2.0 update due?

The update makes Apple Tv worth it. I stopped buying Dvd's long time ago mostly because I watch them only one time and then they sit around for a few years. I rather just spend $3 bucks renting the movie on demand and if I want to watch it again then I'll simply rent it.

This is going to be so cool. I love the fact that I will no longer have to drive anywhere to rent a movie. Awesome.

they'll no doubt be adding movies for a looooong time, but I sware, if they eventually have a large unmoving/unrotating catalog, this is just going to be simply THE best solution for movie lovers EVER. There are two movies I haven't seen yet that I would rent in a hot second from iTunes ("Seven Samurai" and "Grave of the Fireflies").

Let's see.... I could spend about 20e to buy a CD that has maybe 2-3 songs I like, or I could spend about 2-3e and buy just the songs I like, and they would be delivered to my computer in few seconds.

Now, this is a difficult choice... not!

No, it's not a difficult choice, since your download is in a lossy format. At 128kbps you're tossing 10/11ths of the information out with the bathwater.

You know, some people actually prefer to "listen" as opposed to "hearing" music.

Well new services like Amazon are offering music with higher bitrates and not everyone has "golden ears" so they don't need to be in the studio during the original recording to "listen" to music. :)

Can I buy yours?

There are different value props for different folks. No need to pee on anyone's choices here.

I happen to be a person who the Apple TV fills a gaping hole.
