My kids gave us a Google Nest Hub last year for Christmas and given that we generally use it to give us reminders and check the weather (plus it shows the time), I'll pass on the HomePod Mini.

Pretty cool. Though this is what I'm seeing and I can't unsee it, lol.

No mention of AirPlay2?
No mention of pairing with OG HomePod?
Aaaaand (rip for me): "Customers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Spain, the UK, and the US are able to order HomePod mini beginning at 5 a.m. PST on Friday, November 6, with availability beginning the week of November 16. HomePod mini will be available in China, Mexico, and Taiwanlater this year." So no mini nor OG HomePod in more locations..

One plus however: "Siri Shortcuts created on iPhone and iPad are accessible on HomePod mini, so users can ask Siri on HomePod mini to start a pot of coffee, _control a robot vacuum_, add milk to the grocery list, and more." Guess this means HomeKit will finally add vacuum cleaners as a category.

Damn. I would’ve bought one if it was like the Sonos Move and had a battery option. That sucks.

With the updated processor and ultra Wideband support, I am wondering if I should ditch the first gen HomePod, and consider this an upgrade?

Nope. I give you UWB is neat, but keep in mind the 'updated' processor is one used in a watch, not sure how it compares to the A8 used in the iPhone 6. Not a bad processor. Not even sure what a faster processor would do. I AM sure however the first HomePod will sound better than the mini. Did you buy it to be a speaker or a smart assistant? (hint, Siri just isn't that great lol).

Well, I was wrong to be a skeptic about this, and never been happier to be wrong!

Not a terrible price point, but I don't think they will stick at $100 for very long. $70-80 feels more right, even accounting for an Apple tax, given the competitors.

It sports a full-range dynamic driver and two passive radiators for bass response, and an acoustic waveguide to offer 360-degree sound.
I'm not enough of an audiophile, so can anyone comment on how this compares to the audio components in the original homepod which has "a high-excursion woofer with custom amplifier and an array of seven horn-loaded tweeters, each with its own custom amplifier"?

Hard to say the extent until we can hear one in person, but it will definitely not sound as good as the full size HomePod. My guess is that it will sound similar to a full size Amazon Echo, which is to say pretty good.

My scale for smart speakers I've heard so far:

Amazon Echo Dot: okay
Amazon Echo full size: pretty good
Google Home full size: pretty good
Apple HomePod full size: very good

Note that nothing on that list says great.
