Apple today previewed iOS 18, the next major update to the operating system for the iPhone, with new customization features, a redesigned Photos app, and more.

iOS 18 features new customization tools for the Home Screen. App icons now feature Dark Mode and users can tint them with a color to create a unique look. Apps can also now be moved around the Home Screen freely.

The Control Center is redesigned and highly customizable with a new gallery. Developers can now provide tools from their apps in the Control Center. Users can continuously swipe to access other Control Center screens. Lock Screen controls are also customizable.

You can now Lock apps with authentication and hide information from Search and Siri. iOS 18 also includes a new way to connect accessories more seamlessly.

In Messages, tapbacks have been redesigned and users can now react with any emoji. Users can also schedule messages to send later, as well as format text with bold, italicization, underlining, and strikethrough. New text effects provide ways to emphasize words and phrases, with automatic suggestions. Users can also now send and receive messages with satellite connectivity.

In Mail, emails can be automatically sorted into categories to help prioritize messages. There are also new topographical maps with trail networks and hiking routes in Maps. In Wallet, a new Tap to Cash feature sends cash by holding phones together.

The Photos app is completely redesigned. The app has been unified into a single view, with a photo grid at the top and library organized by theme below. The photo grid views the entire library. Users can use Months and Years views at the bottom, and there's a filter button that allows you to hide screenshots and sort in other ways. The space below the grid includes Collections with the ability to browse by topics like Time, People, Memories, Trips, and more. Recent Days shows photos from the past few days, with things like photos of receipts filtered out automatically. People and Pets now gathers photos of groups of people. Collections can be reordered or pinned. Swipe right from the grid and you'll see a new carousel with Featured Photos and other favorite collections. It automatically refreshes to surface new images.

Game Mode also comes to the iPhone for the first time, minimizing background activity to keep frame rates high, plus more responsive connections to AirPods and wireless game controllers.

The first developer beta of iOS 18 is available starting today, with a public beta following at a later date, and official release to the public in the fall.

Will need to watch the keynote when I get home, but the Photos update sounds... annoying as Hell?

I don't want everything on one forever scrolling page???? I want tabs/views?

Hopefully this is an option and can be turned off.

Honestly not sure why anyone thought there were AI updates coming and why the rumours were going around.

We know that they only signed an agreement with OpenAI like a few weeks ago. There was no chance in the world any of those features were going to be announced so soon, they probably haven’t started any dev work.

As well, AI and LLM are still immature technologies, which aren’t ready for consumer devices at all. Every single company shipping products (OpenAI, Gemini, Copilot, etc) have released premature disasters which have been PR nightmares - for customers who largely don’t even want it.

I’m excited to see the flurry of activity. But you’d hope they might maybe do a bit of QC first. Unlike their competitors who haven’t bothered.
He’s talking about it right now lol

No update for Siri!? Siri is literally the worst voice assistant on the market. I can't believe Apple let Siri get this bad. Yet, there were no updates announced to improve Siri. Unbelievable 🤦‍♂️
They literally said intelligence is at the end lmao

This has been perhaps the most boring Apple event I've ever sat through... and I've been watching these things for over a decade. Let's hope there is some glimmer of hope in the AI features

Oops, looks like you were completely wrong

So... still no multi-user accounts on iPad, and still no competent Siri? Come on Apple, stop punishing us ☹️

Edit: At least we got hidden apps and face-ID locked apps, finally.

Edit 2: Ooh, Siri is being discussed. 👀

This ^ but with one tab being all the bs photos that are taken while texting/iMessage (like the various grocery pics I send my wife to ask if we need this item or that item) - to have those segregated from the rest of the "normal photos" that belong would be very helpful. I waited 14 years for a calculator on an iPad so I'm sure we'll see something like this come at WWDC 2038 or so...

Why a limit to only three styles of generated images? That's backwards compared to what we've been able to play with for the last couple of years, needlessly.

All these updates and still can't get a number row on the keyboard or . And , on the main keyboard screen... Still can't close all your apps with one button... Stupid little QoL things the iPhone still can't do

The biggest update is coming in September. I think so far this is huge, especially for developers, with all new API‘s

iOS 18 is probably the most useless release ever in iOS history...

All these new features like customizations etc. are not necessary. Why on earth I would waste my time on customizing the ****ing App icons?!
Don’t use it if you don’t like it. But this may pull some Android users.

Did you continue watching the Keynote?

Looks like some cool AI stuff to play around with. Plus, with "Apple Intelligence", now uneducated people can sound like they aren't stupid when they send emails, which is nice for the rest of us.

"Siri can determine if questions might be useful for ChatGPT to consider, and asks your permission to create it."

Can I just turn CGPT off in settings, and not be constantly annoyed by requests to use a service I don't want?

No, I like to know who exactly those people are so that I can avoid them.

Shrug.

Greg’s summary: „we are just getting started”

Think that brings it to the point. Few nice ideas and demo’s but really nothing that blows away and is close to being ready until next years WWDC.
