I don't understand

Hi everyone!

Like most of you I've waited patiently for the 3g iphone. I was disappointed in some ways...no product(red), mms or video capabilities, but seeing as though I waited before purchasing I can't complain too much. My concern is this: there are sooooo many people here who seem to think that apple should give them specific sp's because they have either owned the iphone since day one, or because they recently purchased one. My question/comment is this: I have NEVER heard of ANY cellphone maker offering a rebate because someone bought a phone a day, week, or month before a new version came out. Can you imagine all the chaos that would ensue if that were to happen? With the amount of blackberry's on the market, if they offered an exchange or rebate program to current users every time they updated the phone...they would barely make a profit. Those of you
who just went out and purchased an iphone with all of the update rumors floating around...please remember "patience is a virtue" and "good things come to those who wait". I've been waiting for this update since they announced the first iphone last year.

Thanks for keeping me informed and entertained!!!!!

OH...for those of you who just purchased your iphone, remember you have 14 days to return it. Take it back, use something old and re-buy on July 11!

one more thing...expect your data plan to go up. I have a blackjack currently, 3g, and my data plan is $34 (it shoud be $39 but they haven't caught on that I don't have the correct plan yet)l for unlimited internet access plus $20 for 1500 texts

I stand corrected...from at&t press release: Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, in addition to voice plans starting at $39.99 a month.

AT&T Carrier Plan Changes?

Saw this on MSNBC:

"AT&T Inc., the exclusive U.S. carrier for the phone, said its plans for the phone will start at $39.99 per month, plus $30 for unlimited data. That works out to be a $10 increase from the cheapest plan for the first-generation iPhone."

Great, now I'm going to have to pay 10 bucks more a month for 3G goodness?!

i'm a little disappointed in the features - 3g and gps were both things that everyone was pretty sure of, and the plastic back seems like a downgrade to me. still, the price drop is awesome.
but i have a question - is the 3g iphone with gps really the same price as its ipod touch counterpart (16gb iphone and touch)?

Except for GPS integration and firmware enhancements (not exclusive to iPhone 3G, thank God) iPhone 3G appears no better than its predecessor.

You apparently forgot to include that lousy, useless price cut. Why pay $199 for more features when we could have kept less for $399. I love your logic.

Some people are never happy. Do you agree that overall, the current iPhone is an improvement (no matter how slight in your opinion) over its predecessor? If not, please give definite, specific reasons. And don't say because it was aluminum on the back previously. Aluminum wasn't worth 200 bucks more.

I like the new hardware, but the plastic back screams "cheap!" and "will look like crap in 10 days flat".

update:

You will NOT be able to walk out of a att OR apple store without a new 2 year contract.

So APPLE WILL have an activation center?

Nice, even more reason's to doubt (contradicting myself in a earlier post) that it's going to be a while before they every focus on the Creative pro users again.

Sigh.

So there will be an phone activation center? Or can you purchase full price (which sounds like a deal considering $720 is the total price just for the data 3G over two years).

10 bucks more for faster, unlimited data access with additional features like GPS that could cause you to use more data. Or with new apps like mlb.com or for sports fans, AP News for new enthusiasts, etc. Maybe we should go back to the original AOL setup of paying by the hour, or better still, paying by the KB. Most other carriers unlimited calling plans are $99.99 + $20 for unlimited texting. Not sure what their data package options are. Does this compare to the $69.99 package of the iPhone which you are referencing? I don't know what unlimited calling costs on the iPhone, and if anyone knows, I'd love to compare apples to :apple:s

It seems to me Apple is changing it's design... the edge of the iPhone and Macbook Air both have a curve on the edge and they look pretty sharp, it's the sort of change in style which Chris Bangle gave BMW after the 2002 7 series. What do you think? have you sensed the change and do you like it or not?

I don't mind the curved edges like the air, but to me it seems too rounded, too bubble like and the plastic seems like it is stepping backwards in time with their design. (reminds me of the G3 iMacs). A little less weight to me is not as important as a good look. I prefer the old iPhone. More crisp and clean. the slightly flatter back on the previous version to me also seems more solid for desktop use.

iPhone Pay as you go UK

With the news that the iPhone will be coming to O2's pay as you go:
https://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/paygo
Do you think that i will be able to put my current O2 contract sim in? I have about 10 months left on the contract and I'm pretty happy with it, i'd like to use it in my main phone... which will be the iPhone when i get it. I understand that you cant put any other O2 contract sim in the current 2G iPhone...
Thanks

*(jumps around)* AWESOME! I've always wanted an iPhone but thought they were too expensive. Thank you Apple.

Is it just me or have they not stated how much it would be on PAYG? Judging by other new phones on PAYG it could well be as much as £400. They'll be only a very small subsidy on it so they'd want more up front.

I like the new hardware, but the plastic back screams "cheap!" and "will look like crap in 10 days flat".
Yes, they made it out of an especially scratch-prone material because they want to sell you a case. They also nicked the dock out of the box, so if you want it back you have to pay extra. So technically it's about $199 + $39 + $49 for the hardware, plus the 2-year contract...

I hope all of the people who declared that Apple would NEVER design the new iPhone with this profile are busy eating their hats right now. Also, it seems the people who fell over themselves calling recent photos showing this profile "FAKE" might want to ask for some whipped cream. (Goes great with humble pie.)

In the last 20 years of using Apple products and the last four following MacRumors, I've learned that only Apple knows what Apple's going to do.

Rogers Communications (Canada) Officially Announces iPhone July 11 – No plan details

Just to make it official – even though Apple said it was included in the list of 22 countries getting the iPhone 3G – Rogers today released a Press Release confirming that iPhone is coming to Canada on July 11.

Unfortunately, the most anticipated information didn't come: Data and Voice Plans.

Rogers is known for charging excessive rates for data. I currently pay $40 for 25MB... that's MEGABYTES. I use it for email and attachments mostly.

I'm hoping for something comparable to our southern neighbors: $30 unlimited data plan and then a choice of any of the currently offered voice plan.

Another item of note: the contract with Rogers is for 3 years and the prices will be equal to the US prices: $199 and $299.

Here's the press release:

Rogers and Apple to Bring iPhone 3G to Canada on July 11

WWDC SAN FRANCISCO and TORONTO, June 9 /CNW/ - Rogers Communications and

Apple(R) today announced that the highly anticipated iPhone(TM) 3G will be
available in Canada on July 11. iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary
features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast(*) as the first
generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services,
and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange
ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built
with the recently released iPhone SDK.

"Rogers has a long history of bringing Canadians the very best in
wireless services, networks and handset innovations," said Rob Bruce,
president, Rogers Wireless. "With iPhone 3G, we will provide our customers
with an amazing mobile experience over Canada's fastest wireless network."

"We're excited to be working with Rogers to bring iPhone 3G to Canada,"
said Tim Cook, Apple's COO. "We can't wait to get this revolutionary phone in the
hands of even more people around the world." iPhone 3G will operate on
Rogers' High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) wireless network, the fastest mobile
network in Canada. HSPA is nationally available in the top Canadian urban
centers from Vancouver to Halifax, covering more than 60 percent of the
population. iPhone 3G will also operate on Roger's coast-to-coast GSM/EDGE
network, proven to be the country's most reliable wireless network. Starting
July 11, iPhone 3G will sell for $199 for the 8Gb model and $299 for the 16Gb
model, on a three-year plan. More details on price plans and retail
availability will be available soon.

The prices ARE subsidized, listen to the AT&T 3G Conference call from today, they explain the new business model and how they purchase the iPhones from Apple for a price and keep the profits from the sales which allows them to provide them at a subsidized prices to the consumer

I keep hearing about this conference call, but I've seen no links to it, nor have I heard any third-party sources on it... did it really happen? I want to know - because if you have to buy the phone with a plan (immediately), I won't be getting the 3G most likely; I'll buy the original from a friend.

From all indications, it seems to me you'll be able to walk into an Apple Store, give a check for $199 or $299 to the friendly Apple rep, and walk out with an iPhone, unactivated.

If it's any different, Apple's really pulling our leg, and shame on them.

EDIT: What the heck??? Found in the AT&T Press Release:

With a two-year contract, the price of an 8GB iPhone 3G will be $199; the 16GB model will be priced at $299.

If this is true, then that stinks. Steve in no way indicated that the two-year contract would be required for the $199 price. He said (and Apple's website states) that the iPhone is $199... AND requires a 2-year contract. Logically, this doesn't imply that the iPhone is only $199 WITH the contract.

I hope Apple does not become the second Microsoft: it appears that Apple's interests shift more or less in the wrong direction in the last couple of years... not a good sign.

Been saying this for quite some time. They don't care really for the Pro or Creative user, in fact, they go out of their way to mess with them.

Case points:

Macbook from 1st gen to Leopard one could NEVER play games, but for a small percentage of us, we could run motion, Open_GL went from 71% to as high as 171% with Leopard, again, no 3D games but motion would run, then APPLE put a stop to that nonsense and released X300 which crippled the Open_GL down to 71%. Hurting the smallest of small in terms of market share.

Same can be said for iMac, no Matte= no graphic machine for Pro's - which was NOT always the case as iMac's were once the designers choice. Not any more. Now its all about "Look honey, how pretty this monitor is....."

You can even go further to say that Apple messed with the FIREWIRE chipsets in the Macbook and iMac, dumping the industry standard TEXAS INSTRUMENTS for a cheaper and more conflicting chipset which has caused problems for audio/video users, again, forcing them into MBP or Mac Pro only.

It does seem like Apple is turning more into a MSFT than ever before (as predicted), especially with their new me.com, they are really catering to all users. While it might make sense as a business, apple has ignored the CREATIVE user while also punishing them (GPU in MB/Mini, (for no reason, we are not the market share)), no matte screen, poor firewire.

Hopefully this will change. Then again, I thought this would be the case last year and they have dropped COMPUTERS from the name, MAC from the SPECIALIST name, and more. They want to be an all for everyone and ignore the creative pro user base and take away their cookies (why bother with crippling the macbook in the 1st place? You could never play games, so it was just to effect the small % of pro users, terrible).

I feel sorry for those who sold their 1st gen iphone in anticipation for the new one and have to wait another month until its out
Why? Lose your phone for a month ... get a newer, faster phone with more features ... AND ... make a profit for the wait. Yeah, I can see how they would be suffering.

Am I the only one who kinda wishes Apple would go back to before the iPhone WWDC's and focus more on the computer aspect. Think about it:
Macbook Pro/ Powerbook: 5 Years as the same design (If you ignore the Intel move, the iSight).
Macbook: 2.5 Years.
Mac Pro/ Powermac: 5 Years (I know the insides were changed a lot but the outer is the same)

I don't know, I just don't get as excited for WWDC's as I used to when they announced things like the G4 Cube or even the original G5.
