so, what happens to the iPod Touch?
(price)

Good question. As usual, the iTouch pretty much got the cold shoulder, except for the usual hurried reminder that Touch users would have to pay their "nominal fee" for the firmware upgrade.

Um, 3G consumes more power than 2G does. If you want to compare battery-lifes, you should be comparing apples and oranges. That is: 2G-longevity on 1st gen iPhone and 2G-longevity on 3G iPhone.

Apple can't change the fact that 3G consumes more power. What they CAN do is to make sure that the device has good enough battery to handle it. And apparently it does. And that improved battery also happens to boost 2G-longevity.

good point. I know it's a $10 increase in price, but it's not like it isn't justified....you are getting 3g after all. Maybe it's just me, but ONLY charging $30 for unlimited data isn't bad...at all

I am currently with verizon, and up until about 2 months ago I was paying $45 for unlimited data on my smartphone. They just lowered it down to $35. If I didn't get my Wells Fargo discount (21%), my current bill of $83 and some change, would be closer to $100. And that's only with verizons' 450 mins, $5 for insurance, 5$ for 200 txts, and then unlimited data for $35.

so for me, heading over to at&t, and paying $30 for unlimited data is nice:)

Well considering the same package would cost you $15 in the UK it actually is.

Do you think you can buy the $200 iphone and then not activate it. That way you get a really nice (cheap) ipod touch without the expensive ATT contract.

I'm sure they will lower the price on the ipod touch. It doesn't make sense to have it be $100 more than the iphone.

the commercial sucks. ew.

iPod touch.
there is no such thing as an iTouch.

I probably won't get one. I don't want to pay higher rates, even though it would be faster.

I recently traveled through random towns throughout the midwest and edge worked great for me! It was reasonably fast and I was able to search the internet just fine.

Keynote disappointing, even though they said it was their largest yet, didn't they? Suckers.

I've been using a Moto Q for the past 2 years and pay around $80 a month for Verizon's cheapest voice/data plan. Here is what the iPhone looks like in my eyes.

First of all, its a pretty decent deal at $300 for the 16gb model. Coming from a phone with slow processor, crappy screen and zero memory, the iPhone pretty much blows it away. You all forget how much of a convergence device it is. There isn't much out there for phones that are so intuitive, seamless and do so many things pretty well. The browser alone is fantastic. Have you ever tried browsing on a windows mobile device or blackberry? It's about as slow and unintuitive as you could ever imagine.

Camera- 2mpx isnt bad and I've seen the quality of pictures from it, not half bad. Lack of video kind of sucks but not a deal breaker

Copy/Paste- Seems like a "duh". Hopefully will be included VERY soon. Not a deal breaker as my other phone didn't have it either.

Plastic Back- I think its just as sexy as the aluminum. Best guess is they did this for reception. This thing has tons of signals going in and out of it. Putting an aluminum cage on it all wouldn't help very much.

The iPhone is a great device. How many years has Windows Mobile been out and look how utterly crappy it is! Apple has built this mobile OS in the last few years and its already leaps and bounds better than anything out there. It really makes me angry at how much I have paid over the years for crappy hardware and software from these other big brands. I finally don't feel bad about plunking $300 on something that has had some care put into it.

I will be getting one....

yeah... what other phone out there has it's own Website format? =) exactly.

And yes the Black model is indeed Sexy..... Oh god! i can't breathe!

MMS and copy paste and all those things... I can wait for. everything else just makes up for it perfectly.

Price Depreciation

The first Gen 8GB iPhone has Depreciated 65% in 1 year...

There is NO other mac that has that poor of a Depreciation Value!

Apple Was nice enough to give all the original owners $100 off anything at the Apple Store, but that still almost 60% Depreciation Value.

No Apple, No PC, No Car... has that bad of a Depreciation value!

This is the first time in my 15 years of being an Apple Customer that I am not happy!

65% people!

Is there ANY phone on the market that holds its value after a year? It's not suprising. Apply HAS to keep up with technology and you can bet on yearly updates for the iPhone. Technology and its rapid change and growth are not pocket friendly. Best thing you can do is keep up on rumors and the changing times and sell your gadgets before product cycles. This means keeping your gadgets in good condition. Doing so can help you hedge the cost of owning the newest and shiniest toys.

What A Huge Disappointment!

What A Huge Disappointment! Waiting all this time, all the hype and this is the best they can do? This is what LACKING!

These are just a few omissions we could think of. The iPhone 3G did not meet my expectations, I would need a few more features.

• NO Flash for the camera
• NO Turn by turn voice GPS
• NO Being able to swoop out my own dead battery
• NO higher mega pixel for the camera

The probability of me getting the New 3G iPhone is 98% sure I won't be buying into the hype. Every one has their own need on cell phone. However for me major security concern not being able to change your own cell battery is important. I don't trust people to do the right thing when handing over a problem non working iPhone for a replacement. With today identity Theft problem on an up raise each and every day. I'm suppose to hand over an iPhone with my PERSONAL information to God know who, maybe a disgruntle employee. Trust that they will erase my personal information for me, with out taking a peek and maybe writing it down for his or her personal gain. Like we never seen this done before. It's only been done almost EVERY day in any given work environment.

• NO Multimedia messaging - Almost every other cell phone in the market has the ability to send images to other cell phones via multimedia messaging, or MMS. Yes you can still e-mail those photos, but MMS is such a basic feature that it should've been in the iPhone from the start.,

• NO Copy and paste - Again, this is such a basic feature. Having copy and paste makes it easier to type out text messages and e-mails.,
• Video recording - In the world of mobile video, Qik, and YouTube, it's a shame the iPhone doesn't have video-recording capabilities. Yes the quality wouldn't be that great, but it should be an option anyway.,

• NO Voice command - For a touch-screen phone, we think voice command and voice dialing would've been a great feature add-on for the iPhone. Perhaps this will be added via a third-party app, but we would really prefer this to be a native setting., I use voice dialing all the time while driving, for obvious safety reason of cause. Plus in NYC it's the LAW to do so. So for this basic function to not be available in the iPhone is a bummer for me. Cause all the el cheapo free phone have this basic function, so not the iPhone?

• NO Bluetooth flexibility - Right now, all you can use Bluetooth on the iPhone for are headset voice calls, and that's it. This is sufficient for most people, sure, but we would like for Apple and AT&T to open up the Bluetooth profiles for the iPhone. This means we would like stereo Bluetooth and A2DP for streaming music wirelessly, Bluetooth tethering so we can use the iPhone as a modem, and finally we would like to have Bluetooth file-transfer protocol so we can transfer files to and fro the iPhone.

I'm out of range of the Rogers Wireless network so I'm not going to be able to get an iPhone. I could get one while at university but I can't use it outside the St. John's metro or at home so what's the point?

I wish it worked on the Bell or Telus network. :|

o2 ireland announce prices!

O2 to Launch iPhone 3G in Ireland on July 11

Tuesday June 10, 2008 O2 today announced that the iPhone 3G will be available in Ireland on July 11. The iPhone 3G device price will be subsidised and priced according to which of the existing three iPhone tariffs a customer chooses to sign up to. The subsidised device prices will start from just €49.

Existing iPhone customers will be able to upgrade to the new device, taking advantage of the same great deal as new customers. The new pricing is also available for non-iPhone O2 customers eligible for an upgrade.

iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast* as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK).

"The iPhone has already proved to be an extremely popular device with O2 Ireland customers since its launch in March and we anticipate a similar response to iPhone 3G when it goes on sale on July 11”, said Danuta Gray, CEO – O2 Ireland. “O2 Ireland’s strategy continues to be to bring our customers the very best innovations and experiences in mobile communications. iPhone is changing the way people use their mobiles forever. "

iPhone 3G will offer faster browsing speeds on the move over O2’s HSDPA network. It will be available in an 8GB model and a 16GB model. The 8GB iPhone 3G will cost just €49 on the €100 monthly iPhone tariff, €99 on the €65 tariff and €169 on the €45 tariff. The 16GB iPhone 3G will cost €129 on the €100 monthly tariff option, €169 on the €65 tariff and €229 on the €45 tariff. All iPhone tariffs include anytime minutes, texts and a 1GB data bundle.

In a separate announcement today, O2 and Bitbuzz, Ireland’s leading Wi-Fi service provider, have agreed a new deal to provide O2’s iPhone customers with free access to Bitbuzz Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the country. The deal, which is for an initial duration of 2 years, will cover the provision of Wi-Fi internet access at all Bitbuzz locations in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland – 155 in total. Under the new deal, access to the Bitbuzz service will be unlimited** for O2 iPhone customers,. Access will be available from July 11 2008.

iPhone 3G will be available exclusively from O2 Retail, O2.ie and Carphone Warehouse stores. It will be available to pre-order from July 1st.

The activation process for customers who sign up to iPhone tariffs is very simple, with the SIM being activated immediately in-store. Once at home, all customers then have to do is sync the device to their PC or Mac, download the latest version of iTunes, follow the easy to use activation steps and the device will be ready to use.

*Based on 3G and EDGE testing. Actual speeds vary by site conditions
** Subject to a fair usage policy

so it seems you do need to activate in store. was talking to o2 today and for the first time if your account has an upgrade available you can get an iPhone on a lower tariff for as little as €45. which is around $60 i think. so it looks like the $199 announced yeasterday is the MAXIMUM that will be charged for the 8gb

O2 UK will have the iPhone on PAYG; all I can hope is that that O2 IRL will follow suit. Damned if I'm signing up for 40quid a month when I get unlimited free texts right now for topping up 20eu monthly..

payg ire

i can see o2 ire doing it as payg too. but to be honest, your gonna have to pay for every mb you download on payg, with the tariff you get 1gb included. plus the handset will be at least €249 for the 8gb on payg

ill be doing the €45 tariff with €20 add on of 400 txts, which will give me 175 mins, 500 txts and 1gb data usage. also with my platinum upgrade i get the 8gb iphone for €49 even on the lowest price plan!

100% getting one.. Here comes the prepared anti iphone notes from the desperate competition posing on forums like this. Changing the battery is a security concern, now that's original.

Anyone who uses a mobile phone for its camera has no idea and their flashes are joke anyway. My Nokia has a bright white LED masquerading as a flash and it does b&%#er all.

apple will come up with a DECENT camera before they implement it until then the camera is as good as anything out there despite the Mp. If you have a tiny piece of glass as a lens 2mp or 40mp the results will be similar.

Its actually the same cost...

I don't know if anyone has thrown this out there yet but....

Its actually the same cost as the last one. In fact, the 3g will cost you more.

$399 vs. $199 + $240 (10 extra dollars for 3g x 24 month contract) = $440.

Think about it.

This is not unreasonable. I suppose another way of looking at it is - how long can you survive without your phone while it's off at Apple being serviced or having its battery replaced? While I will almost certainly be buying the 3G iPhone on launch day, I'm not seeing this phone as the greatest phone in the world. It's just a tribute.

This is actually completely wrong. I'm not sure where to start though. Let's go for the market. The main competition for the iPhone is the Nokia N95 8Gb. It has a 5MP camera which is proven to be extremely good. The N95's main competition photographically is the Sony Ericsson K850i. This also has a superb 5MP camera. These phones also use Xenon flashes - the K850i has both Xenon and LED.

These are Apple's competitors. However, it's obvious that the iPhone is not trying to compete as a camera phone. But because of the launch price of US$199, you could easily buy an iPhone AND a dedicated 10MP compact camera for the same price as those other two phones. And that makes a lot more sense to me.

Video recording.

To those who are saying there wont be video recording or mms messaging because it was not announced in the 2.0 software... think about this...

The new 3G iPhone will ship with the new software already installed on it (we would think), so who is to say there won't be some features exclusive to those previously installed 3G iPhones?

I mean features like that (exclusive to the 3G iPhone) would be even MORE incentive for people to go out and buy one.

DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHETHER 3G iPHONE HAS ALREADY BUILT IN VIDEO CHIP? ...IF SO, CAN A SOFTWARE UPDATE OF iPHONE 2 CAN INSTALL THE VIDEO RECORDING WITHOUT UPDATING THE HARDWARE? ANY ONE KNOW? ANY ONE? ANY ONE?
OR A 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE ENABLE VIDEO RECORDING ON 3G iPHONE? ..... SURE SOME ONE KNOWS !!

What A Huge Disappointment! Waiting all this time, all the hype and this is the best they can do? This is what LACKING!

• NO higher mega pixel for the camera

For the last time: More megapixels never, ever, ever means a better camera. a higher megapixel sensor just means larger picture files with more grainy noise.

Mmyeah, I'd send way more than 500 texts a month, and I would only use up 20eu [2mb] of data if I actively forced myself too. I never make calls either.
