It sure would be nice if they would open up the fingerprint sensor in some way so that apps could use it for authentication purposes. For example, I use the 1Password program and it would be nice to just use my fingerprint to get into it. Hopefully some functionality like this will be coming in the future.

Careful of what you wish for.

The main problem with sites such as MacRumors is that so much hype and excitement is created before the announcements that there’s nothing left to be excited about when it’s all presented. Today’s event clearly showed that Apple continues to lead the way in making products that address our needs and wants. Good job Apple!

Yes, MacRumors members like myself shot our load off months ago! :D

youre high. just as your PIN is not transmitted to apple/nsa, theres no reason for the fingerprint hash to be transmitted. apple could be sued if they lied about that.

So, what does Apple care? They'd probably get a 500'000 $ fine. If I remember correctly, your own government is being sued at the moment for massive, unconstitutional privacy violations and we all know how that's going to come out.

----------

Wrong. They're stored in a secure element on the processor, provided by NXP.

The chip can only set new fingerprints into it, and verify if a fingerprint image matches the one stored in it. You can't extract the fingerprint out of it.

says who? Apple? You've gotta be kidding.

----------

If the NSA wants your fingerprint, I am sure they can find a very easy way to get it. Do you wear gloves at work, when you enter your car, when you dine at a restaurant, etc.?

Not if I don't live in the States - with the 5S, the NSA can collect the fingerprints of 1/3 of the world's population without ever even leaving their neat little desks.

I'm not - although I was curious to see whether they would include it.
I have it in my current phone - HTC One SV. Never used it. Ever.

And I am SOOO getting the 5S.
Looking forward to switching back to iOS after a over a year in the wilderness.
No pricing points up where I live yet.

Watching and waiting

Well, I would definitely use NFC where I live. It's everywhere in Japan.

----------

Just like they do with any other forms of id like a drivers license or id card.

Exactly! I know the NSA has my fingerprints. Why? I am in the Navy, and when I joined in 2005, they...DUH...took my fingerprints! While I am not super pumped about what the NSA is doing to seemingly invade some of our privacy, why is everyone bringing this up? It's actually not that big of a deal, and doesn't affect maybe 95% of the US population. People are just paranoid.

And you beleive they won't get a copy of the fingerprint file? Didn't apple state they never took data from your computer, then admitting later they did? Nothing like apple helping the government collect fingerprints for them. Thanks but no thanks.
As for iOS7 going 64 bit, didn"t apple state the 2006 mac pro was 64 bit, but was found out later it could not run 64 bit OS? I will wait until the tests are done from reputable labs to see if the 5S is what its supposed to be.

I do not know if they will at some point, hence my post.

I also heard after my post, that they (now say) will not be opening up the fingerprint software to third party developers 'YET'. How will they maintain security or their position, if they say on one hand that no other App's will have access only to then do the opposite.

Otherwise why not say that they will never open the software to third parties?

I agree on waiting to see data and lab test's.

The 5c would have been tempting at £349 or even £399 but £469 for a 16GB is eye watering stuff. And to add another £20 to the already exorbitant price of the 5 is taking the piss - they clearly think people will pay it in the UK and they are probably right. Of course you can always get a 2 year contract, but I prefer to buy unlocked phones. I have owned a 3Gs and currently a 4s, and I just can't justify upgrading for speed, a slightly better camera and a fingerprint sensor, and of course the bigger screen. 4s users, hang on another year! The iPhone 6 will almost certainly have a bigger and better screen, 802.11 ac, wireless charging, 128GB, new form factor, 2GB RAM, better camera...and more :) Of course if your 2 year contract is due for renewal, your decision is already made...

Same here. £469 is a crazy price (despite it basically being a 5 - more or less).
I, too, have a 4S and not feeling any real urge to upgrade.

Why can't you buy the 16GB phone, save yourself over $100 and then subscribe to iTunes Match for $25/yr? You've got 4 years of Match paid for, and you'll save yourself another $100 in two years when you repeat this money-saving feat. You can just send me the money you saved if you would like!

Scenario... you go on holiday and want your music collection with you. Streaming is a no-go as there's no wi-fi at the beach/wherever you are, and roaming costs prohibit streaming over cellular. iTunes Match isn't much in this case.
I'd kill for a 128GB iPhone to store all my tunes on. Not everyone wants to stream - even in their home country - where data would get sucked up in no time and it's costly to pay for extra MBs used.

winter's coming...

love to see how folk get on with 5s in their fancy touchscreen gloves.

is it too late to copywrite the fingerless glove?

One thing that has really impressed me is Apples willingness to bump up the camera spec without upping the megapixels.

When we are surrounded by this years 12mp - 40 mp phones it takes some guts to say "you know what we aren't playing that game".

Still not throwing my DSLR out, but impressed that they would improve the sensor size and not the megapixel count.

I will be grabbing one to replace my 4S.

nobody can tell you how to live your life. sorry.

unless you have reason to, im not sure why you would upgrade annually. only devs and phone nerds do that. (i do).

iphones retain their value. i always sell the previous model for $4-500 and use it to buy the new model.

I guess I'm a phone nerd then. Thanks

Work in progress

The 5S will allow Apple to test its key iwatch technologies - the M7 chip and the fingerprint sensor. That's when you'll see Apple enter the mobile wallet business - who wants to bump their phone against a cash register when you can touch your watch in close proximity?

I've bought Apple products for 20 years because they are well made and last. I'm still using a 3GS and have no reason to upgrade until it dies on me - which it shows no sign of doing. I've always been tempted by the impressive new cameras, but I'll stick with my quality stand alone until I need to upgrade.

Not impressed by the specs. The whole x64 thing is a red herring to throw people off of the fact that A7 is not quad core. Apple is almost 2 years late on that.

Camera upgrade is OK. The dual-flash shouldn't be a big deal as white balance can be fixed easily. Going to f2.2 is good news. I'm interested in seeing how people use slow-mo.

Finger print lock is probably the biggest functional upgrade.

But really though, at this point, phones are phones. Nothing groundbreaking is going to happen. This applies to both Apple and Android or other OSes. If you want the latest toy, you'll upgrade. Otherwise, you'll stay pat.

Well being a quad core is also a red herring unless the software on the phone is written well enough to take advantage. There have been many tests showing the dual core A6 under iOS6 having parity or an advantage over an Android phone with quad cores. If the software does not properly take advantage of quad core versus dual core - then it just consumes energy. Since Apple controls the software and the hardware side -- the computing resources are used to greater effect while maintaining power efficiency.

The camera is a big deal as I have owned three Android phones - high end - and other than the HTC One the cameras have blown chunks. I have seen much better photos taken with my friend's iPhone than anything I have taken with an Android. Again apple went with an increase in mega pixels, but also large pixels and a larger aperture. Add to that the better flash and lighting and I think the camera is actually very good.

1) You can setup your wife and kid to be one of your multiple fingerprints.
2) Your wife and kid could use your PIN code.
3) Your wife and kid could use the emergency call feature on the lock screen.

4) You can cut off one finger and give to your wife or kid. (but not both)

The first 64 bit phone which is up to 2x faster than a already quick 5. Improved camera, way more options, a new flash. Enhanced motion capabilities leading to newer and better workout apps and lastly better security.

Evolutionary, which is what everyone SHOULD have expected.

Count me in. Space Grey with a black leather case. Cool. :apple:

Now I just need someone to wait in line with.

You'll be disappointed

Day one buy for me, just for the A7 and better battery life, and the Space Gray color. :)

iOS7 is a freaking battery hog!! I've been running it for a while on my iphone 5, and it sucks. I used to get between 2-3 days on iOS6, with iOS7 I cant even make it 24 hours without charging.

To be expected with the dollar down (for no good reason).

Seems like the outright price in Australia has gone up $130! I didn't think the AUD was going that badly... Seems very excessive. 64GB is now $1129, up from $999.

Perhaps the new government will fix that as well after they nix the Carbon Tax and Stop The Boats.

We'll be up to iPhone 7S by then (or when the next election is due)...

The 5 gets in the way of sales of the 5C.

Honestly, I think part of it is that with the "S" series having minor form factor changes over the previous model, the "luxury" factor of having the latest and greatest will show more with the more marked differentiation between the 5C and the 5S. Keeping the 4S as the "free" (with two year contract) phone means that there no longer will be new phones being sold with the same basic form factor as the 5S.

cool, waiting for the benchmark results, those cortex A-53 and A-57 chips are gonna completely crush the android smartphones.

I was worried before the announcement of jumping ship and moving to my current Galaxy S4.

Not really impressed. The fingerprint scanner thing isn't a big deal to me but it is still neat. My password takes no time to enter, so it isn't huge. The better camera is great, but the camera on my S4 is phenomenal. I am greatly disappointed that Apple still hasn't adopted a larger screen for the iPhone, that was one of the biggest reasons why I left.

Who has information that sensitive on their phone?

Every app that can "do damage" (banking, iTunes, credit card, etc.) requires it's own independent password anyway.

I can't fathom the need for this much security on a phone. What are people keeping on there? Blueprints for stealth drones?

You might be surprised.

Also, no one is forcing anyone to lock up their iPhones on any level (well, if you get it through you job, they might...)

If you do not feel there is anything worth protecting, you do not have to use a password, a PIN or this finger print scanner, it still works like a regular home button. People who want to secure their phones have another option now.

----------

I rarely have someone looking over my shoulder when I use my cell phone. I use my cell to make and receive phone calls, to iMessage, to send and receive emails, once in a while to read news updates from google news, to do some minor banking and to listen to those iTunes I carry on the iPhone. I don't play video games on the phone.

I'm interested in iPhone improvements that improve my quality of use...such as a screen you can easily read outdoors in bright light.

You may not, but some others may. How about those people who pull out their phone in a crowded subway car? At a sporting event? In a big city where you really can't get away from people? People steal phones, some may be targeted before the phone gets stolen, and if you use a 4 digit PIN to lock your phone they could see it before swiping your phone. Sure, you may never have had an item stolen from you but some others have.

You may not use all the features of your phone but someone else might. Lots of other people play games on their phones.

I think it's safe to say the majority of people don't care about mobile security.

Getting rid of a lock screen good idea, but not a main selling point. I never used a password because it was one more step to get into my phone.

I think I'm in the majority of users. The 5S basically is the 5 with upgraded specs and something most people don't care about. I was hoping for a game changer, all I got was removing a password unlock which I never used anyway.

Disappointing.

I think sticking to the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB storage was a miss, especially when flash storage keeps coming down in price....

I blame this on the hard-core fans who are willing to throw money at any lower spec phones. The consumer drives this in a certain sense.

----------

Yeah Apple is making a killing of iPhone sales. Huge fail.

Do you really need your whole iTunes library and a years worth of photos? Sync your phone and back your stuff up occasionally!

YES!!! Especially those of use who like to listen to lossless audio formats.

That's disappointing to hear, i hope you are wrong.

That may be true, most have not put a pass word on their phone (I do not have one on my iPhone) and most may not use the finger print scanner on their iPhone 5s. Maybe they will play with it at first and find that it gets rid of that "one more step" to get into their iPhones (The reason I do not use a password now) and keep it, but maybe most will end up not using it. At least it is there as another option.

I hear you regarding a lack of a game changer. The Touch ID is just another option (I am not calling it an upgrade, just another choice) the 64 bit A7 chips sounds nice, but it is not a game changer. The camera is just an upgrade. The gold color already seems like old news and I have yet to see it in person.

Let's see if other phones can beat Apple and change the game, I still think the iPhone is the best phone on the market. The other companies are catching up quick and will sometime surpass the phone in various features (I know cameras are more than just megapixels, but 41 is still pretty damn impressive on a phone, especially when compared to 8. The Canon 5D is 22.) but none have made a better overall phone, yet.

Do you really need your whole iTunes library and a years worth of photos? Sync your phone and back your stuff up occasionally!

Then why did we even get past the 4GB and 8GB sizes? Do you really NEED more than 8GB?

Many get the 16GB because they don't need/want more (Some people in this thread rarely take pics or do much more that call people and check their email) but some get the 64GB and are tired of having to delete stuff from their phones to make room for other stuff.

No one needs 128GB but some might like to have the option.

I think most phones already beat the iPhone, HTC one, s4, note 2 and note 3. Aesthetically the iPhone is bar none tho.

I came from the iPhone 5 and 4s and think they are great phones and ios is smooth as it gets but I was waiting for a game changer this year to bring me back to ios.
