Is there any hope AT&T will give us like $10 off for a year or something?

Can I buy a AT&T phone today and get it free, and then get a iPhone, since they aren't giving me anything for the iphone?

That's what I'm hoping to do. I'm going to find out for sure tomorrow. I don't care what kind of phone the free one is, as long as it has bluetooth. Then I can finally trash my bluetooth nextel and use all of the programs like BluePhone Elite with the free phone.

Are the txt messages shared? If I add 1000 txt, will that be for one phone or both/all phones?

That's doesn't make sense though. It would be cheaper to get an individual plan and then add a line.

$80 individual = 900 min
$80 family = 700 min

I hoping that includes lines 1 & 2

from AT&T s site....

Share minutes and save. Get the first two lines for one low price. Each additional line is just $9.99 per month.

their policy has always been a la carte...you add whatever service you want to each line...text messages, data, etc. So 2 iPhones would add $20 each for data, assuming you have an existing plan... or a new 'family plan' for as low as $109 sharing 700 minutes (two iPhones)...so, a single iPhone with a regular phone would be $89, assuming no additional features for the second phone... edit in red

you might be able to...but where is the benefit? you won't have two lines or two sims...are you planning on switching them constantly?

Right, see Sprint makes you get txt for each phone so I am just wondering if AT&T is doing the same.

Can't I just use the phone as a remote to change songs in iTunes using Salling Clicker without a SIM? If not, then I'd just sell the phone or give it to my wife.

They are definitely a ripoff. For two people who want an iPhone, it would be better to get two individual plans than to get a 'Family' plan.

It's pretty close, but it depends on if you want unlimited N/W or 5000 (which is a lot). Combined, you'd have 200 more total daytime minutes, but only 5000 N/W... So, for 10 bucks more, you'd get 100 more daytime minutes per phone and limited (although huge) N/W minutes. Another thing to consider is if your minutes get used up in an even balance between the two... In some situations, the combined makes more sense, where one phone gets used a lot more than the other.

So, I guess it comes down to if you need unlimited N/W or not... On ours, we have a couple of teenagers using them that burn up the time on N/W, as well as the free anytime mobile-to-mobile. I wouldn't be surprised to see them use up 5000 in a month easily.

On this one, my sister, my dad, and myself are sharing 3 lines on a family plan... My sister's phone (with the teenagers) uses up way more than 1/3 of the total minutes, but my dad's phone hardly ever gets used, so she can in effect use his unused minutes. If you have one phone using up way more minutes than another of the two, then family shared will help (although the posted family plan combines for less than two individuals).

Another example of how your mileage may vary... Being existing, we can keep renewing our 850 shared minutes for about the same price as the new 700/family.

It does work. I just did that exact thing tonight. I had to pay $10 for a phone but I figured it was worth it.

The phone won't boot up w/o a SIM card. It will ask you to insert a SIM card before it's able to load any application, etc.

As far as I've ever seen.

AHHGHGHGHG! I guess they will make me put the SIM in from the free phone into the iPhone?

If I have done 20 of 24 months and cancel - is my fee pro-rated? Or I pay the full amount month 1 and month 23?

It may prove cheaper to just pay my monthly for 2 months and not cancel early.

I think MBHockey already answered this question, and he's right. It's just a flat $175 fee, and if your monthly plans are cheaper than the $175 contract termination fee, just wait it out and then cancel. :)

There would still be minutes listed since land lines aren't "mobile".

Ooops, um, yeah, forgot about those tricky "land lines". Us New Yorkers don't have 'em, our mobiles are normally our land lines. :)

sorry, but i have to laugh at this. this is a joke. i currently have a blackberry pearl that runs on the ATT EDGE network. it is ridiculously slow. just to get a weather report can take 30 seconds. can you imagine how long a movie from youtube would take to run. i would say apple might face some false advertising issues when actual speeds are compared to the running TV ads for the data. the reason data is unlimited and "free" is because it is terribly slow. if they had charged for it, poeple would have been complaining like crazy. if it's "free" you can't really complain.

You are 100% right.

To do an investment like, $600+~$100/mo*24 mo = $3,000 with no way to switch carriers or use it outside US (I am not talking about AT&T roaming).

And on that slow molasses network. Yeah right. I would just buy a maxed out MBP :)

Thanks OP.

Some interesting stuff from http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/iphone-faqs.jsp

Q. Is iPhone eligible for Wireless Phone Insurance?

A. You activate iPhone in a whole new way—using iTunes right on your computer. All you need is a PC or Mac, a credit card or debit card, access to the Internet and an email address.

The credit approval for your AT&T service also happens on your computer. It’s part of activating through iTunes, but if you’d rather have your credit pre-approved before you leave the store, an AT&T store representative can help you with that.

You will also select an available plan during activation.

Q. Does iPhone work out of the box?
A. No. iPhone must be activated before it can be used. iPhone includes a pre-installed SIM card for your convenience.

Q. How long does it take to activate iPhone?
A. Most activations should happen within a few minutes of selecting your plan. If there are any questions around your account status or credit, there may be delays in activation.

Q. How do I upgrade to iPhone?

Your voice plan will stay the same) The iPhone Data Plan gives you Visual Voicemail, as well as Unlimited Data—includes both email and web—and texting, all for as little as $20. You'll add an iPhone Data Plan during the activation process.

Q. Do you have a special return policy for iPhones?
A. Yes. Apple branded equipment is covered by a 14-day return policy and must be returned to the original point of purchase. If the Apple branded equipment is returned unopened and in the original shrink wrapping, it will be refunded back to the original payment method. Opened Apple branded equipment that is returned within 14 days will be subject to a 10% open box restocking fee. All products must be packed in their original, unmarked packaging including any accessories and manuals that shipped with the product.

Since they aren't giving us anything what about getting a cingular phone from amazon that has like a $150 rebate and $0 upfront, then you could get the $150 and go ahead and replace the phone with the iphone once you pick one of those up, since there is no conditions to upgrade to iphone, if you pay the 500/600. I wonder if this idea would work, or if the rebate would end up not going through?

Why can't they just give us $10 off a month for 1-2 years, if you're a new customer? That is what they should do.

Exactly....

You are 100% right.

On watching the video and seeing the Pricing Plans I'd already worked out that the price difference between and iPod and iPhone was 250$ and that I'd need the 80$ Plan + SMS = 100$ a month!

I suspect that a lot of buyers are going to wake up on the 30th with a (financial) headache. And we're not the first to see this - the big airtime providers have been pumping stories into the UK press this week. For example take this one from the broadsheet 'Telegraph in the UK;

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/06/27/niphone127.xml

Finally I know nothing about the US Pricing Plan market but if Apple's trying to push European airtime providers into minutes carry-over then no-wonder they're having trouble finding a supplier.

If one calculates the retail value of the cumulative expired minutes and divides that into the 'suppliers annual profits we'll see they make half their money by not having carrying-over.

It take more than hype to compel an industry to rebuild it's collective business model, not even Apple hype! It takes a quantum leap to do that, and iPhone is not a quantum leap (yet).
