I'm not spending an extra $300 for the ability to just upgrade the ram in the 27" one. It looks like my first gen MacPro will be the last Mac I will buy.

I love how fat Schiller brags that the iMac is now fused shut. He probably likes to rub it in. He's been dying to force customers to upgrade their computers through Apple.

great. :(

Does anyone have the 2011 prices for entry 21.5" and 27".
Because in Austria prices now start at € 1.349,00 (~1750$) for the 21.5" and € 1.879,00 (~2450$) which I think is much more than the previous generation!

Yeah they've all got slightly more expensive.

I just want to say I'm so happy I gave up waiting for this piece of garbage 3 months ago and built my hackintosh.

An $1800 desktop computer that has the performance of an obsolete notebook? Wow. It's a DESKTOP. Makes no difference to me if it's 5mm thick or 5 inches thick. All I care about is performance.

So, i7-3770, GTX 670 (not a crappy M model), SSD and massive HDD, all for under $1000 or this underpowered pile of junk for $1800? $90 for Mountain Lion and the trackpad was all I needed to spend with Apple.

Oh and Apple invented hybrid HD technology? Oh wait, no they didn't. Been out for years, and if you care at all about performance you have separate volumes for you SSD and HDD.

Well I built a Hackintosh with a PC that went obsolete after I bought my iMac recently.

It was cool to do it and all, but after the hassle I didn't fine it super fast or anything. Plus it was finicky as hell. Put a flash drive in the USB ports and I got kernel Panic. Reboot and try again it works.

Hackintosh is a good experiment and its just that.

Epic fail.

It's not a new design, it's just thinner. There's no optical drive, which kills it for me. When I use Windows on Bootcamp it means having to have an external optical drive on my desk to load certain programs or play DVD or BD movies in my collection, thus defeating the purpose of having an all-in-one machine. Another external device to add to my modem, external HDD, speakers, etc.

No optical drive

No new stand design

No retina display

No upgradability

No touch screen

No exterior design change (e.g. same chin)

No difference in available sizes

This is essentially little more than a spec bump with a thinner screen. I don't need a thinner screen. The only possible appealing feature is the 75% less reflective AG coating.

FAIL.

+1, except I don't need touch screen for a iMac, possiblle on a laptop.

My 2009 iMac 27" i7 works pretty decent, and has optical drive...

I'm surprised that they dropped the optical drive. I actually think that was a bad move on their part. It's a freaking desktop it's not going anywhere other than your desk.

They removed it for a few reasons:

1. Saves money for them.

2. Optical drives in iMacs have been known to get discs stuck. Less repair, less moving parts.

3. Apple is pushing software distribution to iCloud and Mac App Store. They are trying to kill the optical drive and it's working.

PEOPLE LISTEN UP: The change is here. If you use an optical drive now, get used to living life without one. Convert all of your stuff to USB drives, store it in the cloud (Dropbox) or something else. Complaining won't get you anywhere with this.

Why does my desktop need to be lighter? I'm not using it on my lap... Give me an optical drive please.

Because:

Not to mention that the high-end GPU in the 27"-inch iMac is the BEST mobile GPU and the 12th fastest of all GPUs right now. Great news for 3D and gaming on the Mac!

You actually typed that with a straight face? The fact that the *best* GPU on their "flagship" desktop is *at launch* the 12th fastest GPU means it's good for gaming???

Perhaps you should investigate mobile GPUs in greater detail. The GT 640 - GTX 660M are derived from the same 384 shader GK107. The GTX 675/680MX are lower clocked harvests from GK104. So even at +$2,000 on hardware you are looking at about $200 of GPU power if you decide on the BTO option. That is 1080p level gaming.

Stop spouting nonsense - the highest GPU option for the iMac is the 12th fastest GPU in the world right now, and the first among mobile GPUs.

See here: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

Short of a FURNACE, this is as good as it can be with a 680M.

Um is it just me or does anyone else think this iMac is wide in the center? It's almost the same width as the previous iMac.

On the website Apple cleverly hide this fact and emphasis only the 5mm thick edge. They did exactly the same thing in the keynote even when Phil Schiller showed it in the flesh.

I know this makes clever marketing but maybe there's a back story behind all this. Like the engineers were unable to satisfy management with the overall thickness so the compromise was to make the edge thin and the center fat. It's obvious that management didn't get 100% what they wanted.

Something is very wrong here, psychologically.

"Apple Announces Lighter, Thinner..." does not make sense being followed by a product title that isn't designed to be carried around or used on your lap.

This is very weird. It's not just weird. It's a little mystifying. I'm having trouble wrapping my head around what Apple is thinking.

I think you nailed it. I believe the "form" folks are running wild @ Apple.

Ok I have several questions: Are there 2 physical 2,5" drives in the new iMac 27"? One SSD and one HDD? Or are those Flash sticks like with the MacBook Air
and Retina MacBook pro? Is the HDD user upgradeable/repairable? How does Boot Camp work with the Fusion drive? Am I able to turn it off completely because I actually like to have both OS X and Windows on Flash as well as my games and programms (256GB should be enough) and keep all my movies and music on the HDD.

it's no so thinner, they add a belly fat on the double chin

Did they remove the FW800 port too? I have 4 FW enclosures on the floor connected to my 2011 iMac. Guess I won't be upgrading until Thunderbolt prices come down to my level.

I'm thinking the same thing. I wanna buy a 2011 high end and just stick with that for now.

It is working? Ironically even Apple isn't able to supply its own software(The whole package) in iTunes. Example - Logic Pro.

I've been barking up the "kill optical" tree a long time, but until most software is available for download (or, I guess, on a USB stick), you're going to hurt consumers and developers.

I also agree with the posters who are saying, "it's a desktop, it's not going anywhere" as a reason they aren't forgiving Apple for cutting the "bulk" of an optical drive.

The GT 640M lets you squeak by at 768p.

How long do you think it will be before mobile GPU's get to the level of say a current 6970

I looked on the website and I can't find a single photo that shows a true side shot of the new iMac so that we can see how thick or thin it really is.
