They call it the thinnest notebook ever, not the thinnest Apple notebook ever. I can only assume if they had made it 11-12" it would be classed as sub-notebook and so they would have to retract that claim. I'm sure when you take some of the driveless 7-10" machines of past, you would find thinner. There was a Sony I believe which came with HD and DVD in a removable dock. The rest of the machine was almost as thin as the screen.

The keyboard looks god awful. Nasty color contrast:mad:

ffs stop spamming the thread!!! you made your opinion clear. now **** and move on!

I for one think it's a beautiful little machine. Apple's done a helluva job with it. The wow factor alone would almost make it worth it for me to buy. But I'm holding out for a MacBook Pro. I need the extra oomf. CS3's a beast... Btw, anybody know if the MBPs are getting an update? Don't wanna buy one and have a better model release for the same price after.

Once again Apple has shown us that if you are rich and have cash, you are supreme Mr. Cool.

Though wearing my Macbook Air at starbucks won't look so cool when people see "Air" on the screen...

Was looking good on the UK store until that died, it has now gone back to the 'back soon'. Looks good, I want one, but don't need it and at £1200 will probably never have one. Does this mean I have to buy a MBP after all? My 12" G4 is still going strong after 4 years and 2 months (albeit with a new HD), but it doesn't really cut it with video anymore. I refuse to buy a MB, I don't like plastic. The Air is luuurverly, but I need Ethernet and it would be my main/only computer/entertainment device (I work away from home for months on end).

One other question, do you think the optional superdrive will work on other Macs? Would be great for copying DVDs!

Nice spec and a good keynote.

Shame about having to listen to Randy Newman though - a voice that could grate cheese - single handedly ruined the opening titles to Monk!! :)

So many negatives. Christ, I think if the Macbook Air doesn't satisfy your small laptop needs, then you REALLY need to switch back to PC.

This may be good for a school or something. Very few things for students (and teachers) to mess around with. Price is a bit high, though. This should go for $1000 less at $799 or something. Not sure how I feel about the lack of firewire. I also looked at the pics of it on the Apple site, and, like the new iMac keyboards, there's no Apple logo on the command keys. WTF?

You're kidding right?

Apple would be stupid to only release a $2700 ultra portable. What's smart is to give people a $1700 laptop, or raise the price by a grand for the SSD.

Newegg is selling a 32 GB SSD for $399. They should have just made that the standard along with a slot for a removable 1.8" HD.

The third…

This is my third negative post regarding this year's Macworld.... I can't believe it myself... after growing up in front of an Apple II and almost all Macs that came after that...

Isn't Design the means to bring function and value to a product? It used to be. The MacBook Air seems like Design for Designs sake.

You could call it the portable Cube...

Sure I've waited for ambient light sensors to make their way into the whole lineup (it seems pretty clear that the normal MacBooks will get this too).

And I can't wait for speed tests of the SSD since Hard Drives are always the speed bottleneck of todays Computers.

But that aside, what do you really get appart from a glossy screen (yuck)

Very Cool

Love the form factor & overall design - beyond the state of the art in that regard.

In fact the whole machine is a little bit ahead of its time. The SSD drive is just on the edge of becoming mainstream, but isn't quite cheap enough or big enough yet. That will change in time, and I applaud Apple for offering it.

Not happy about the GMA graphics but it isn't at all unexpected. People who care only about paper specs and price will go for a MacBook or MacBook Pro, but I think the Air will be a popular product - I suspect it's going to be amazing in the flesh.

I don't understand why people are nitpicking this Mac based on specs and price - this is clearly NOT a machine for the hardware freak, overclocker, gamer or skinflint bargain hunter. PCs still rule the roost for those people.

Very disappointing morning....how can anyone get excited about a laptop with no internal optical drive, only one usb port and less attributes than Macbook yet it's $800.00 more? Oh, sure it looks cute and perky and all that nonsense, and you would be the first one in your office to have a notebook smaller than all yer buddies, but is it REALLY worth $1800.00? Give me a break! All flash and no substance with a deliberate financially elitest price tag...sorry folks, but this is a total ripoff. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE Macs, but I just don't understand that if they have such a wonderful product, why the hell do you have to practically sell everything you own just to buy one? It
pissed me off enough when they discontinued the eMac and replaced it with the Mini...now I hear they're gonna shelve the Mini and replace it with...NOTHING! Instead they come up with a hip little toy that'll cost more that one month's rent....as said, a very disappointing morning.

For me, this is amazing. I was planning on selling my Mac Pro and getting an MBP assuming they would be updated. Now, I will keep the MP and get this. The MBA will be my road machine, not doing too much intensive work on it, very little photo processing if any. I love the commercial. This thing is really thin, I'm gonna order sometime tday :apple:

A lot of people who have MBP's have problem with warping...

You think this little guy is gonna be any better?

Worse, actually! You watch.:D

No doubt, absolutely sexy piece of equipment, not for me however as I need something with a bit more power to it. If I ever become a journalist or a photographer I know what computer is for me though! :D

I Love Apple but

Name sounds like a frikkin AIRLINE!
VAIO TZ is thicker but can be used as stand-alone system with DVD, faster and more spacious HDD/SSD drive, more ports etc.
I despise the styling - white macs ftw!
Only ONE USB? Thanks. No firewire? BLASPHEMY!
Too expensive - In the UK that is MBP territory
VAIO TZ has more power

MacBook Nano (MBA v2 lol) - a lil thicker but more powerful than the VAIO TZ please :)

And give us more ports

And Blu-ray/DVD

And firewire - to make me feel better ;) a Mac w/o firewire = :(

Make it white.

I'll keep my MB

Thanks :D

No Firewire!!! --- No Purchase!!!

:-(

No Ethernet!!! --- No Purchase!!!

:-(

No user-replaceable battery!!! --- No Purchase!!!

:-(

RAM is soldered to the motherboard (cannot be upgraded-increased!!!) --- No Purchase!!!

:-(

I've decided on a regular MacBook, since the Air wasn't what I was hoping for. But is there any reason to wait until MacWorld is over before buying? I mean, there are never any updates after the keynote, right?
