wow. over 30 pages of comments. heres my two cents.

first- the keyboard is ugly. i've always respected Apple for having they keyboard and rest of the laptop match- having a two tone makes it seem Dell-ish.
second, it seems the screen could have been bigger.

for all the (correct) hype Apple gets for design, this is a stinker.

First, Look up the early PowerBook G4. That's where this design comes from.

Second, I think you're the first person to say that. Most were hoping for a smaller screen.

Mmm... let's see here. Korg MIDI keyboard, Cubase dongle, Logitech mouse, USB speakers, smartcard reader, printer, external HDD, Flash stick, iPod dock (and soon, iPhone dock), digital camera dock. That's 10 (soon 11) USB devices plugged into my PC notebook's docking station w/ external hub. I've switched my desktop machine to a Mac and I'd love to switch to a Mac laptop as well, so I was thrilled to see the rumors about a docking station. You see, if there's anything I hate more than being fired at with a semi-automatic, tortured or burned alive, it's unplugging a billion cables every goddamn time I need to bring my laptop with me, and plugging them in again when I return to my desk. Apparently Mac users think it's a blast, seeing as they have no problem with the absence of a docking station, but I really need one. And today I half expected Steve to answer my prayers. But noooo, he had to introduce yet another MacBook model, only this time with the least possible amount of USB ports, one less than my antique PC laptop collecting dust in the attic. Thanks Steve, why don't you just poke me in the eye with a sharp stick while you're at it?

*hands him a USB hub*
There, there is your dock! Simple and can be bought everywhere, just plug one USB cable into the MBA and you are done.

As much as I want this new MBA, it is definitely a desktop companion. Plus I just don't have the money for it in the first place, but I will like to see where it goes. Should have added a swivel touch screen, and hell added Wii controls the thing is light enough :p

I know, right? These people that are like 1 USB MY WURLD IS OVRE... protip: you were never going to buy this thing.

i could see as an second computer for a person. LIke if you have a mini or a mac pro at home, and use this on trips.

but if it is your only computer, i have a hard time buying it

No wayyyy could this be your sole computer. This is your Mac On-The-Go(TM), just to keep you going until you get back to the real deal at home :)

Calm down people

Everyone is freaking about the price for the 64gig SSD version.

Calm down people. Apple is trail blazing here. This is new territory. The simple fact is that SSD drives are new technology and hence VERY pricey. I believe the 164gig SSDs are like $4000! So stop complaining.

The prices for solid stat will drop like all things EVENTUALLY. And they will get bigger too. I understand how Apple is marketing this with the small hard drive and no optical drive. The world is going wireless, and digital. Soon most people will get their movies as downloads. This is EXACTLY like when Apple came out with the first imac and it had no floppy drive. People FREAKED! They said it would never sell. Yadda yadda yadda. Look at the imac now.

You've just got an advanced glimpse of the future folks. Thats where we are headed. A totally wireless digital downloadable world.

If you want/can afford one now...buy. If not...get a macbook. Thats what I plan to do. Although I travel ALOT, and the airbook is appealing size wise, I need a bigger HD. I'll check in with the airbook in a couple of years.

But for some people it will be the perfect choice now.

And for those bemoaning that it's still too big for an ultra-portable....wait till you hold one...I'm sure you'll freak at how thin and light it is.

That being said, if you know Apple like I do, you will be seeing a "mini Airbook" sometime in the future too I am sure of it. But if you want an 11inch screen, you'll just have to wait. :)

Cheers.

Well said

Well - with that much stuff I'm thinking you're going to be tied to a desk forever.
But I'm not tied to a desk today. The Dell D/View and D/Port combo is a great docking station, it brings the screen up to eye level. I hit a button, wait five seconds for the system to undock, slip the laptop in my bag and presto, I'm on the road. Come back home, dock, and I have a complete desktop system with all the bells & whistles.

A MacBook doesn't really qualify for desktop replacement; it just sits flat on the desk and I have to plug in/unplug tons of stuff which would certainly tie me to the desk just to avoid the hassle. I'm still hoping for that iMac-esque docking station to come along and change all that, but until then I'd rather put up with Vista than MacBook cable hell.

They should have came out with a model that was priced around $1200. I might would have bitten, but $1799 for a computer that is much slower than my current MacBook and the only advantage I will have is thinner and a little lighter. I would say that the only people that will buy this are people that will buy anything Apple comes out with. I call them Super Apple Fanatics. I consider myself an Apple lover but not Fanatic. I would love to see a 12" MacBook Pro myself.

Montevina update later this year requires a whole interior redesign.

We will see a MacBook Pro in the coming weeks but it will be a simple chip swap, maybe a new GPU.

:/

I'm hoping to upgrade my PowerBook to a MacBook Pro soonish... is it worth waiting for the Montevina update, or the intermediate update, or just go for the current spec? I'm prepared to wait to get a machine that isn't going to suddenly be really out of date.

i think apple is into wedge shaped design nowaday, look at the new fat nanos, ipods, imacs and now the macbook air; they all have this wedge design to make them look like they're thin. i'm beginning to think that apple is losing its design ingenuity.

Get a mStand / Elevator / whatever

buy a USB hub / more bluetooth devices

Alternatively, gtfo. It sounds like you're whining for the sake of it

If anyone wants to see how SLOW this air book really will be just use carbon copy cloner and clone your hard drive onto your ipod and then boot from it. Then you will see how much this thing will SUCK.

Yeah, if it weren't for power, Ethernet, audio and external monitor...
Today I plug in zero cables, I just put the machine in the dock, which has gigabit ethernet, audio out, 5xUSB, power and DVI. Any MacBook that wants to sit on my desk needs to do the same.

I'm really suprised no dvd drive was included. Not complaining, just suprised. Granted, they came up with a great way to get around the problem, but it is suprising. The best thing would be to rip DVDs to iTunes, but I dont think this is on the horizon.

But the big question is: will someone who only wants a second computer spend $700 more on something that is technically inferior because it is 2lb lighter than the cheaper product?

Maybe apple should produce thousands of different products for all the different people in the world (you could specify the exact requirements you need), maybe also give them product codes rather than names.. fancy a Macbook ZcX500? Or an iPhone 450DX? bugger.. maybe the Macbook XcX501 is better..

Oh that company already exists.. it's called Sony.

Apple produces a select suite of products for a select market, simple.

NO ONE is going to be playing Bioshock on MBA...so 1.6 ghz or not is not really a problem

Alternatively, gtfo. It sounds like you're whining for the sake of it
And you sound like the stereotypical Apple fanboi who can't stand hearing anyone criticize your religion, but I didn't ask you to gtfo because it's not my business to tell you what you what to do.

I'm talking about the one thing that keeps me from switching to Mac.
I was under the impression that the Mac community encouraged switching, but I guess not.

With only one USB port available and so many optional (IMHO essential) USB devices (Ethernet, flash memory, hub, external mouse, etc.) to plug/unplug into it, I wonder how long would it take to wear it down to PCB board?
