Macbook Err

Honestly! Who cares about a 1.5 lb difference? Especially at the expense of all those ports and the optical drive?! If it was difficult to carry a 13.3" laptop before, the MBA won't change that.

-Clive

Isn't it a 2lb difference? That's a 40% reduction in weight. Almost half. With an SSD it may be about half (of course I have a slight lingering fear the SSD will make it 3.0 and that the HDD is really 3.3lbs, but will see)

If the adapter is smaller that is a further weight reduction. Anyone know what the weight of the current 13.3 PB adapter is? The new one is like 45 instead of 60W and should be smaller.

The bottom line is apple is deaf. They only hear one voice and that is Steve's. The customers mean nothing to them. We have all been saying the same stuff forever.

WE WANT:

1. A mac that uses a standard desktop processor. Not a xeon, not a mobile but a regular quad core cpu from intel. We want it smaller than a Mac Pro but larger than an mini. GET IT?

That would be nice. What about the people who want AMD? It should be apparent that you can't make everyone happy.

2. We want a damn macbook pro with a freakin upgradeable hard drive, a magnetic latch and some dame cellular connectivity.

All hard drives are upgradable. Which cellular should they choose, CDMA? 3G? WiMax? I'd rather use an express card for that.

5. Put a damn SD reader in all your macbooks and macbook pros already.
What happens if you don't have a camera that uses SD? Rather an external reader, or USB cable, then a format that I may or may not have any use for.

two buttons is useless compared to what they have implemented right now..

That's what Apple kept saying about right click on mouse
Untill 20 years later they reinvented it and called "mighty mouse".

Major upgrade 2020: two button touchpad! :D

3. We want an updated Mac Mini for pete sakes.

4. Put a damn Express card slot in the freakin Macbook already.

5. Put a damn SD reader in all your macbooks and macbook pros already.

6. FIX the blessid problem with using a usb hard drive on the Airport Extreme. No, the new airport with hard drive is NOT a fix.

7. Re-release a freakin new isight or put one in your monitors for heavens sakes. What the hell is wrong with you guys???

8. Oh for heavens sakes christ almighty cut that damn trackpad button in HALF and make it 2 buttons. PLEASE!!!

People have been begging for this stuff since forever but does apple listen? NO! They come out with something so completely useless like the Macbook Air. GEEEEZ!
If Apple listened to your suggestions I'd be broke, so would all of my friends, and my department.

Think of it this way: this is analogous to an ultralight racing bike for someone who already has a BMW. It won't go as fast or carry as much, but it's a delightful piece of engineering which fulfills an entirely different function.

That is a bad analogy as the racing bike would be at least 2x faster than BMW(no mater the model), but yeah you won't be able to carry many things. The MBA is not the same thing.

No... you want that. Single Quad Core MBP is in the same price ballpark as high end iMac now. NO room for a fourth desktop.

2. We want a damn macbook pro with a freakin upgradeable hard drive, a magnetic latch and some dame cellular connectivity.

Do you really want an upgradeable hard drive, or do you just want Apple to make them cheaper? Personally if price was not an option I'd get the highest capacity BTO upon ordering and be done with it. I wouldn't be too concerned about buying my own, installing it then having the stock one that came with the machine just languishing about and doing nothing. ymmv

As for cellular connectivity - isn't that what the Express Card is for? It's an optional item, and rightly so. I can just use my phone as a bluetooth modem so I wouldn't want a built in component... I'd find it redundant.

3. We want an updated Mac Mini for pete sakes.

Always last in the pack. Last way for Apple to squeeze some old components onto the market, after MacBooks move onto something better.

4. Put a damn Express card slot in the freakin Macbook already.

Hah, keep dreaming. Suppose you want 9-in-1 card reader, full DVI and fw800 too?

5. Put a damn SD reader in all your macbooks and macbook pros already.

spoke too soon...

6. FIX the blessid problem with using a usb hard drive on the Airport Extreme. No, the new airport with hard drive is NOT a fix.

Can't comment - unfamiliar on the issue

7. Re-release a freakin new isight or put one in your monitors for heavens sakes. What the hell is wrong with you guys???

...Not every Mac owner uses Apple displays? iSights in ACDs would be pointless there. It's only the Mac Pro and Mac Mini without now, anyway - all other Macs running ACDs would have a useless second webcam (how much is the primary one used?)

As for older and current non iSight Macs - USB webcams are ten a penny, or is there something amazing about the iSight I'm unaware of? (design aside)
I got a free Microsoft USB webcam just for opening a bank account- is there any money in reintroducing them? This is a serious question, I don't know the answer.

8. Oh for heavens sakes christ almighty cut that damn trackpad button in HALF and make it 2 buttons. PLEASE!!!

Uh, no? Ctrl Click, Two finger Click, Double tap click - or mouse. Plenty of options. I like my nice wide single button thanks. Like they said in 1984, "makes it incredibly hard to press the wrong button" :D

You a recovering Windows user or something? Need your physical right click fix? Naw we can all pass on that one...

Chill~

All I have read so far are negative comments. One mouse button, no CD drive, no firewire, no ethernet, ugly keyboard, no memory card slots, etc. How about something positive?
It's the world's thinnest notebook!

Lighten up.

I guarantee you that at this very moment IT departments across the land are fearing for their budgets when one of their executives claps their eyes on this. It's not a performance box, none of the ultra-portables out there are, but as far as I know there's nothing to touch this on performance in this packaging. A 1.6Ghz Core 2 Duo is MORE than enough for the majority of people and for those that need more there's the MBP line. 80Gb hard drive might be less than you'd like but I've got just that in my MB and that's got a bootcamp partition installed as well as all my apps, music, documents, photos etc and there's still at least 30gb free.

Absolutely! This laptop will sell a lot among top managers worldwide. It is so thin and so sexy...

I predict they will have problems with the supply of SSD. The majority of the MBA will sell with this option.. (and it still costs less then sony...)

Apple fans have this attitude that they always have to sell their brand.
A was one of those.

We are buyers not sellers.
See the difference?

The only people who are calling it an ultramobile PC are in this forum. It's a smaller, lighter MacBook for those customers who desire that. If they don't won't it, they won't buy it.

Also, it's not overpriced. Instead of complaining, offer what you think it should cost.

My thoughts too. I wonder what Apple paid to have Intel shrink the C2D chip by 60%.

re: MBA 'footprint'

I always carry folders containing A4 documents, that is items with a 'footprint' close to MBA. Consequently, there is no advantage for me, in terms of portability, to be gained from a smaller footprint. However, I will certainly appreciate the reduced weight, over my MBP, when cycling to my lab. each morning.

ultra light bikes are hugely expensive

Hmm what are the price tags on these ultralight racing bikes and BMWs you speak of? A MBA ($1800) is more than 50% the cost of a Mac Pro ($2800) + Display ($600). I imagine BMW's start around $30,000. How many ultralight racing bicycles run over $15,000?

I think you would be surprised. Many ultralights and time trial bikes are over 15K. Hey, it was a good analogy for those that are into racing...

Bottom line is this Air laptop just ISN'T for everyone. It is sexy enough to want to touch and play with despite the black keyboard (should have been a medium gray IMHO for slight contrast, but not TiBook black), it is portable enough at 3 lbs. (arguments about shoulder pain are real, and we all have our opinions and deficiencies), it's easy to look at the 13" display without squinting, and truth is you can get around the superdrive omission if you start to plan for it (Handbrake for ripping DVDs, and get the add-on module for installing software at home).

Spec-wise it doesn't replace my 12" Powerbook which I can run Adobe CS3 on very nicely with max RAM. I thought I actually might try one until I learned that the harddrive is not replaceable. I can see wanting to upgrade to a 160GB or 200GB fairly quickly. My bet is that even road warriors will thirst for a larger harddrive soon enough. They'll find it's like a BIC lighter: when it's done, you throw it away and get another one, or keep freeing up space with the slow wireless backup to the Capsule.

Actually, I personally wanted a smaller sized Pro machine, this doesn't appear to be it. Specs off of Apple site:

1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4MB shared L2 cache

2GB (onboard) [no mention of expansion]
80GB Parallel ATA, 4200 rpm

Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory

So it's slower than MacBook, has the same hard drive (yet with less storage) as the MacBook, and the same barebones graphics as the Macbook. It's certainly much thinner (and a beauty of a design), but I still declare my 12" Powerbook king.

I feel that if they had just gone ahead and released a 13" Pro computer two years ago, they would have filled a big market niche and not felt the pressure to come out with something so cool and different design-wise, just something really good and functional.

Sorry if this was already said - I am just working my way through the thread now - but the HDDs are NOT the same. The MB has a 2.5" HDD; the MBAir has a 1.8" HDD. However, I am a little disappointed, because I believe that a 200 GB HDD in the 1.8" form factor was just released. 80 GB is just too small IMO; but then again, this is not for me.

It is sexy enough to want to touch and play .

What exactly makes a laptop sexy??? A girlfriend is sexy, but a laptop... I do not think so.

On the other hand, if someone gets excited with laptops, does that mean that every trip to the Apple store is like free porn?:p
