This product has gotten more release day hate here than any other product...except the iPod when it showed up in 2001. Which tells me it will fly off the shelves.

Get your facts straight first.
I bought iPod's two first generations. And guess what!
It did not fly off the shelves until, Steve finally agreed to make it work with so much "hated" Windows.

I guarantee you that in five years, there will be much more available than a 160 GB SSD option!

Black keys on aluminum is fugly!!! I thought that's why Apple didn't go with black keys for their new iMac keyboard.

Nice laptop. I'll probably get 1 in 5 years with the 160gb SSD option.

Apple's MacBook Air is cool, but I actually liked Wired's mockup design better (except for the apparent lack of iSight).

Now, more importantly...where's my Penryn MacBook Pro?!?!?!! Oh well, maybe later this year.

Yeah right on the mockup. Wired's designer was smoking crack when he/she made it. At least the Air Book's is different and not hacking out of spare MacBook and iMac parts. Or even worse.... hacked out of iPhone parts like the iPhone junkies would have wanted.

Agreed about the Penryn MacBook Pro though.... now that we have a third lineup of nice but not super powerful laptops we need to see the ONLY Mac computer that hasn't seen a design change in almost 6 years to get an overhaul.

People keep complaining about this notebook because it doesn't suit their needs, isn't powerful enough, missing this, missing that etc etc...
It's as if this notebook replaces apples other 2 notebook lines rather than complimenting it.
If this notebook doesn't suit your needs buy a MacBook or MacBook Pro, what's the problem?

Other ultra portables such as Sony's TZ series also make compromises to be tiny and light as possible such as low specs, higher prices and no built in optical drive.

This notebook isn't meant for everyone it targets the ultaportable market where it's specifications and price compare well with the competition. Ultra portables have yet to take off in the USA but they are HUGE in Japan.

Think about it, just because this isn't for you doesn't mean Apple don't have a market for it, this will help Apple compete better with Sony in the japanese market for starters.

Caution: Use Your Brain Before You Type!

OHHHH I can't take it anymore. Are people really this ignorant? So many people write in just plain dumb comments on this thread
without actually thinking about what market this laptop is intended for...

Where's the optical? buy the $99 external
Wheres the Bluray? Are you kidding me?
Where's the SSD for $250? see answer above
Where's the discrete graphics card? IT'S A SUBNOTEBOOK
only 2GB RAM? see answer above
only one speaker? who gives a ******
slow 4200rpm HDD? It's the only 1.8" drive speed available... so buy the SSD
very expensive? Get a clue! Have you compared it to similar models. It's cheaper than Sony and Panasonic.
it's fragile? It's made entirely out of ALUMINUM METAL!
its slow/not power/Wheres the 4-core processor? ITS A SUBNOTEBOOK FOR CHRIST's SAKE! Compared to 90% of all other subnotebooks, this one has an excellent processor. Most all the others have Intel ULV 1.06ghz chips!!!!!

My feelings are mixed on the Macbook Air.
This notebook is designed for style rather than function.
I have watched the MacBook Air video guide and this notebook is not a desktop PC replacement.
I find it amusing, the video speaker used a Windows Computer to remotely install CD software for the MacBook Air.
If I wanted a subcompact that does less than a normal notebook, I would have gotten the Asus EEE notebook.

No, it's designed for portability. And OBVIOUSLY IT'S NOT A DESKTOP REPLACEMENT, JEEEEZZZZUS. Thats on the other end of the laptop spectrum than subnotebook!
If you are honestly comparing this to an Asus EE toy, then you need to get a clue! Compared to most subnotebooks, this thing actually has alot of power.

I don't get the people that excuse the missing internals by pointing out you can get the same functionality with an add-on.
Great, I can carry around a ethernet dongle in my bag, an external optical drive, a USB hub, micro DVI adapter, DVI to VGA adapter, external USB sound card, ect. By the time you add on all that gack, you're damn near back to where the standard MacBook is.
It's like the cube all over again. The average consumer will see it as too expensive. The professionals will see it as useless.

Nothing like the cube. This thing will sell like crazy! The average consumer is NOT the target demographic. Business professionals will see it as miraculous, except for the locked battery.

this laptop is just odd, what kind of target audience is this reaching? Why is it between the macbook and the macbook pros? The macbooks and the macbook pros should have just been replaced with the design of this laptop (as close as they could have gotten it)
imagine being a consumer walking into an apple store and never hearing of the "Air", there is not enough there to pursuade anyone to purchase this that is not out of their mind (mac head)
To top it off i think the black keyboard is just wrong, this is going to come back to bite Apple in the ass, they could have done this a whole lot differently and made a lot more people happy (current and new apple customers)

Apple is trying to please their target demographic, and that would be anyone that wants a small and light subnotebook with decent functionality without sacrificing a full size keyboard and decent screen size.
Not enough there to pursuade? Obviously, It's what is NOT THERE that is the big deal. For people who value size and weight, this is the ultimate carry along on travel.

Paying $1000 for the thinness is just rediculous.
If I want a ultra-portable, this is not it. This is even 13.3, huge... I suddenly find Asus EEE to be a great thing. It is even cheaper than iPod touch 16G.
If you want to buy a toy and call it a laptop, Go for it!

It fails at that. The weight is there, but the thickness is irrelevant and the footprint is too big. I am in that specific market and this is not the right computer for that market.
Obviously, you are NOT in that market. The market they are targeting wants a full size keyboard and a screen big enough not to have to squint. If you want an 8" laptop, go look at dynamism.com

lol, its thinner, slower, shorter life span, less port, expensive. over all, i would advise ppl to wait for another 3 month, price will drop significantly
I highly doubt the price even moves an inch. Routine travelers and the fashion conscious will be all over this thing..

This is in no way more portable than a macbook. Lighter, doesnt mean more portable. You still need a bag, you still need to buy a CD Rom for it, and now you get to worry about breaking your 1700 dollar piece of crap.
Worthless. If this was 600 bucks, id consider it.

$600? thats because you are way to cheap to be the target demographic for this. "Piece of crap"... are we a but jealous of those able to afford this?

The MBA is going to have some serious problems.

1) Warping.

2) Bending

3) Cracks

Macrumors will be flooded. Run now:(

Quit spreading ********...

Is it me or dont people want ultra portable notebooks to be small as in the diagonal size, and not necessarilly super duper thin?

I love my Macbook but I want a smaller ultra portable notebook and the Sony TZ series is less than a foot diagonally which is perfect for carrying around. This new Macbook Air is the same size as my Macbook but just thin, which I dont really care about. Still looks pretty sweet but I wish they would have made it with a 10" screen.

Sounds like you want a Sony TZ or Panasonic model. Go look at dynamism.com (grey market importer from japan)

Black keyboard... EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
No internal SuperDrive...EWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
Name... EWWWWWWWWWW! :p

Well thankgod most don't buy a computer for a CDROM or the name....

I lulled.

This thing is all flash, no gas. I love my MacBook, but the MBA is a POS. Something Paris Hilton might buy - noöne with common sense will touch it.

Actually, those who travel alot with common sense will buy this in a heartbeat. "no gas"? Really? is that why nearly every other subnotebook from Sony, Panasonic, et al have an intel ULV 1.06ghz processor, 1GB ram, etc.
IF the thought would have crossed your mind to actually compare this model to one IN THE SAME CATEGORY, you'd see it actually has excellent specs. If you want a MacBook Pro, THEN BUY A MACBOOK PRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
POS? I think you are just jealous...

It's funny actually.... You guys whip yourselves in to a hysterical pre-keynote frenzy. You start making wild guesses, with each guess more fantastical than the one before it. And when the keynote is over.... you whine. No matter what new products Apple releases, you whine. Endless, non-stop whine can be heard everywhere. It lasts for few days, maybe few weeks and then it quiets down. Just in time for next event/keynote, and that's when the cycle restarts.

It's hilarious to watch.

I know isn't it great. At least for the first few minutes, then all these morons just get really annoying...

MacBook Air is missing a partner ...

The Air fails to solve the "anywhere" connectivity issue....solve this issue and you will forever change our world .... partner if you have too....

Get your facts straight first.
I bought iPod's two first generations. And guess what!
It did not fly off the shelves until, Steve finally agreed to make it work with so much "hated" Windows.

None of that affects my argument...as a matter of fact, it helps me, since the MacBook Air can run Windows. Anyway, who here hates Windows? I don't (except Win ME)...you must be confusing me for some stereotype.

/snip/ It is a niche product, just like Apple TV, and it is a bummer that it took the center stage today.

All products are niche products, what the heck.

Ten things I have never used:

angel hair pasta
black nail polish
crockpot
tower type of computer
leaf blower
bourbon
gun rack for a pickup truck
string bass
car with automatic transmission
bacon press

And so... what, they shouldn't have made the marketplace?

Fanboy/girl much?

Nice thing about the Asus EE is I can also run OSX, or windows(what ever you like) so it not a toy a all.

Those companies choose that chip because they know that people shopping in that market care more about battery life and design. That is why they can get up to 12 hours of life on a single charge, while still being a sub-notebook that is relatively thin. Plus the fact that their battery is actually user replaceable. We can't forget the fact that these laptops also come with a ethernet port to connect to the net in a location where there is no wifi, or limited wifi.

Oh, and when the thing breaks, good luck transferring your data in FW target disk mode. What is the target market for it, I wonder. I could understand if it were like an oversized iPod that has to be synced to the main computer, but standalone it is kind of silly.

As it is, what makes it better than the Macbook except its backlit keyboard and that it is "perdy"?

It is a niche product, just like Apple TV, and it is a bummer that it took the center stage today.

Yeah... I think this computer is meant for those that may already have another, more powerful machine. That user that wants to take a simple, really really light ultra portable book with them. That person isn't me of course (patiently waiting new 17" MacBook Pro  ) but my girlfriend is considering it. I will give her my go ahead once I see how it runs with that crap 1.8" drive.

Well, name aside I still don't think the storage allows it to be much more then something whose purpose fills that of the casual computer user. 80GB of storage max is hardly anything these days, perhaps this computer will be good for schools but beyond that I'm not sure of the viability of this laptop... Just because it looks good doesn't mean it actually has viable usage....

I think you missed the point. Schools won't buy this thing at all. It's meant for those that want to travel super light and don't need much connectivity that isn't wireless. It's perfect for those that for some reason see the MacBook as too big.

Nice thing about the Asus EE is I can also run OSX, or windows(what ever you like) so it not a toy a all.

Not legally. I don't care what hacks you can use to get it running, it's just a bad idea to run a hacked, cracked OS. Go ahead, don't let me stop you, but you can't call the Asus eee a dual platform machine unless you're talking about Windows and Linux. Sorry.

There are some really good ultraportable laptops out there that beat the MacBook Air on feature content, I'll give you that. But the MBA is still a solid machine, and probably wins in the design category.

Fanboy? haha.. I DON'T EVEN OWN A MAC! but I'm surely going to defend proper analysis of this computer in the context of it's targeted demographic and the existing market. Many others are screaming about this laptop being underpowered, and I point out that in comparison to competing models, it's actually quite powerful. From that I'm a fanboy? lol.

To my point, Yes, there is a crowd that likes the Asus EE, but it too should be compared to others in it's class, like the Intel classmate or OLPC, et al.
I called it a toy when others in this thread were trying to compare it to a the MacBook Air.. It's not even in the same league.

I'll say this: the MBA is a great engineering feet, no doubt about it

But, I don't think the technology is there yet to make it feasible beyond being a niche tech demosntrator for the next year or two. Slow HDD, limited expandability, high cost to manufacture, etc. A year or two from now? Perfect.

I hear you with the standard drive, but no angel hair??

OHHHH | Are people really this ignorant? | dumb comments | Get a clue! | JEEEEZZZZUS | you are just jealous... |all these morons just get really annoying...

OK Winterspan, thanks for your encouragement. Really. I think you have to realize that we were hoping for some MBP updates, and maybe a smaller form factor for the MBP. We're used to doing some serious things with our machines other than emailing and surfing the net. You do us in injustice by assuming that none of us have heard of the sub-notebook market before.

I'm so happy you got your subby. Maybe now you will find peace, and give us serious notebook users a rest. We need it after your tirade.

Fanboy? haha.. I DON'T EVEN OWN A MAC!

Suggestion for Winterspan's note-to-self during a quiet, reflecting moment: "Hmmm, maybe I should at least own a mac before I start spewing market crap on the forums. I really don't understand macs at all, and there I went getting all defensive for a company's products that I have absolutely no familiarity with."

I have a feeling I know just the mac for you:) It'll be good for you two to get acquainted.

WOW The machine really looks cool. I like the back LED keyboard and screen - that's what I really wish I had on my SR MB. But the thinness comes with a big price I probably don't want to pay: 1 USB, no ethernet, no SuperDrive, ...
OH... did I forget the real PRICE?! LOL I'd rather use that money on a MBP. Just need to work out a bit more to be able to carry the weight. :p

Not everyone knows a MacBook is 5lb.

If you tell someone who is shopping for a computer that the MacBook Air is 40% the weight of a MacBook that isn't really doing them a favor. If you tell them it's 2lbs lighter than the 5lb macbook, it will.

What if you tell them that it's 40% lighter than the 5lb macbook? Does that work? What if you just tell them it's 2 lbs lighter, without telling them how much the macbook weights? That doesn't really help either does it?

Wow, that is quite a statement. I have worked and sold to many large corporations and I am surprised at how many macs I am starting to see.

I have contracted for almost every major corporation and I have only seen one manager use a macbook. If it doesn't have a docking port it will never get integrated into corporate america period.
