Yeah... no. I think it's time for me to sell that iPad that's been collecting dust this whole time.

Hmmmm. Now thinking about selling my almost pristine 16GB iPad Air and getting a refurbished 64GB iPad Air 2. How much do y'all think I could get on Craigslist?

Ugh but the battery on the iPad Air 1 is better than the Air 2...........
Yes, but the A8X is more battery efficient so it basically balances out.

I think the question is, do you really need to multi-task and are you going to do it on a regular basis to warrant the expense?

If you're just doing it out of novelty sake, hardly worth it IMO.

Yep, this settles it. I will not go through this again.

No iPad/iOS device. Ever.

I'm tired of being left out in the cold.

Android is a more than viable alternative and has served me well for the last couple of years.

I think I'll give Windows a shot next and see.

Apple, you are killing me! I want to love you, but you keep pushing me away... ;P

Why did it take Apple 8 years to do this?
Maybe they wanted to get the interface right. I really like how they implemented it. And really, doing this on a 3.5" iPhone 8 years ago would have been fairly pointless. It wasn't until the iPad and larger-screen iPhones that it became practical. And then, as others have said, the devices needed a lot more memory.

What iPad/iOS devices have you owned that have caused you to be tired of being left out in the cold?

so ready for this. now i can only pray i don't have to wait another 'air' iteration and can just snag me a Pro.

somewhat of an ambiguous and cynical statement for no reason - on the day they just announced an OS update that STILL supports devices going back to 2010.

isn't android notorious for dropping support on tons of devices anyway?

Obviously it only supports iPad Air 2 from a RAM perspective, but I still feel pretty shafted owning an Air.
It was quite a deliberate decision to put only 1GB of RAM into Air 1...
Heck, one could argue more than 1GB would have made sense before the Air even, but let's not get into that.

"You knew what you were buying!"
Yup, the only iPad they have at that time.
Remember, no BTOs with iDevices!

Amazing to think we need 2GB of RAM to multitask between Twitter and email. I used to multitask on a 2GB Mac Pro using Photshop, Maya and Nuke. And yes I'd have my email app open too.

Did the Mac also have a tiny mobile CPU architecture, a smaller mobile GPU, and no ability to have virtual memory. Apples and oranges it would seem.

Didn't Apple just announce that their multitasking only works on iPad Air 2? That leaves every other device out.

This isn't the first time I've lost features (some that were on the device when bought and now no longer work) or the ability to do something based on device limitations imposed by Apple (whether reasonable or not), from the iPad 1 on down.

I've been an exclusive Apple device user since 2001, until 2012 (or whenever iOS 7 came out). I just don't feel like making a list...

My 2 year-old Android phone is able to multitask effectively. Period. So can other (older) tablets out there.

To commit to Apple would mean to commit to the "yearly" upgrade cycle. I choose to not be a slave to that.

So...in this case you didn't lose features, right?

1GB of ram not enough for iOS and 2 apps?

Does iOS require more ram than windows (desktop)? Because Win 8/8.1 runs with 1 GB of ram pretty smoothly and with more than 2 apps at the same time....

Hahaha, you got me there Semantics-Man!!

The point is, am I going to miss out on a feature I want just a year down the road?
That's how it happens with a lot of technological things. On the other hand, if they did make it available and as part of it your experience on our device in general became that of an iPhone 4 on iOS 7 when it came out, how would you and many others feel about that?

Mobile architecture vs. desktop architecture. Apples vs. oranges at best. Almost silly to try to draw equivalences like that and try to imply something using that.

Ah, so you own an iPad Air 1. In your previous comment you neglected to provide that tidbit.

Yes, Apple has done things (more recently than in the past) to give customers reason to pause before considering buying/upgrading.

I bought an iPad 1 when it first came out. Upgraded to a 2. Skipped the 3 (because it was pretty obvious it was going to be short-lived), picked up a 4 with the expectation of keeping it for 3-4 years. The performance degradation of the 4 as a result of iOS 7 and 8 caused me conclude that the 4 will be my last iPad until Apple demonstrates a willingness to preserve customers' investments.

I sat out the Air and Air 2. I will be testing iOS 9 on my iPad 2 and 4 to see how well it performs on those devices. By then, I'll see what the landscape looks like.

As far as protecting my investments in technology, I have found that my Android tablets are still going strong and are still performing as well (if not better due to rooting and debloating). Some make a big deal about "missing out" on newer versions of Android, but having a downlevel version of Android hasn't prevented me from using the apps that I need/want. I suppose that is where fragmentation is a benefit... developers need to support more than the latest version of Android to widen the number of potential customers.

No, I don't own an iPad Air 1. I simply noticed early what you describe in your post, which is the cause of my frustration with Apple. I'm tired of them underpowering & locking-down devices on purpose, because they can get away with it.

Not with me, they can't. But I really wish they didn't.

I'm actually pretty psyched for this feature. While on the couch, I've wanted the ability to see my chats while browsing or reading for a while. While working, I've wanted the ability to read PDFs while composing an email.

I just hope this isn't limited to only Apps that specifically code in support for the feature. Some of the Enterprise apps I use aren't exactly updated often...

It's only two applications fully independent side by side for Air 2 only. The side view, and movie picture in picture work on Air 1 and the mini 2 and 3.

You mean side view is there for iPad Air, just not that both views are fully running? Im ok with that

Damn, I'm so happy I didn't cheap out when I was looking for a new iPad last November. Happy I went for the Air 2. The Air 1 for $400 was pretty tempting, but now I'm glad it wasn't tempting enough.

My personal rule "always get what you really want" never disappoints. Whenever I cheap out I regret it later.
