I’ll answer this, as I just sold around 4 OG HomePods in preparation for the 4 midnight HomePods on the way.

I trust that the sound quality will be as good or only slightly worse than the originals, any upgrade in any way is a nice bonus but not why I’m buying these.

I’m buying these for their up-to-date (relatively speaking of course…) chipset and functional parity with my 4 minis.

It was very annoying not having the U1 in my OG HomePods.

It was annoying that OG HomePods, while mine were all still functional, eventually conk out, and one that I had was starting to ‘maybe’ develop the popping/hissing issue once a week.

A renewal on the chance to add AppleCare to each of them is welcome too. In case these also have issues.

Any other questions? This only scratches the surface of why I’m upgrading all at once.

I made around $700 selling them. Pays for 2 out of my new 4.

Savvy.

The truth is I believe that even with reduced tweeters and mics, this HomePod is going to sound significantly better to this trained ear.

I don’t know about everyone else’s ear but not everybody is a music producer.
I am thinking about sending in one of my OG to get fixed with a link someone posted earlier. It's supposed to cost between $60-80. However, I am curious what annoyed you about it not having the U1 chip? I am not seeing any issues with my working OG, but perhaps I am missing something because I don't use the mini and the OG together.

Simply, the feature of bringing my iPhone near the homepod and having it handoff. Mini always handled it way better.

I still have my OG HomePod which remains in my Utility Room and just bought 2 more HomePod minis and will have the 2nd HomePod soon so I will have a mini in each room basically.

I think even with reduced specs I’m expecting it to sound as good if not better

I ordered white. Apparently the midnights are more backordered. Why are people so conservative in their color choices? Is it me or does white look better than some drab dark gray color?

Once again I’ll field this one.

I had my white HomePods next to my tv as the default speakers. Instantly realized it was a horrid choice. Black Homepods fade away so much better during a movie at night.

Hence, 4 Midnights for me, and no Whites this time.

Also, Midnight is obviously being picked more because it’s a new color also.

I've already got speakers for my TV. I'm going to be using these in my home office so I think it will work.

I hope they’ve addressed the excessive bass of the original Home Pod. Whenever I played music on it from my iPhone, I had to set the EQ on it to bass reduction just to get it to sound normal. And “normal” to me is already what many people consider to be bassy in the first place.

The sound profile on the OG has change so much (for the better) since 2018 and OS 11.2.5 and that boomy muddy sound of the original profile hasn’t occurred in years…at least on mine.

Amusingly many people ding the HomePods because they don’t have enough bass. I do wish that they had a generalized EQ setting that you could customize and use regardless of which app you are using. Having that built into Apple Music is needlessly restricted.

It's you. A black speaker blends in with your home theater system. Why in God's name would you want white speakers sticking out like a sore thumb? White simply doesn't equal hi-tech/slick looking. I could never figure out why people would buy iPads or iPhones with white bezels either. 🙄

They don’t show the dust as much lol is one advantage. People who hide their speakers don’t care what colour they are either.
