In June, Apple discontinued its "buy now, pay later" service called Apple Pay Later, which let qualifying customers split a purchase made with Apple Pay into four equal payments over six weeks, with no interest or fees. Instead, Apple said customers in the U.S. would be able to apply for loans from select other "buy now, pay later" services when they check out with Apple Pay on the web and in apps on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

Affirm payment plans have been available through Apple Pay since last month, and competing service Klarna announced that it is integrating with Apple Pay in the U.S. and the U.K. starting today, and in Canada in the coming months.

iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 users can select "Other Cards & Pay Later Options" when checking out with Apple Pay to access payment plans available from Klarna and Affirm. For example, Klarna offers an interest-free "Pay in 4" payment plan for purchases totaling between $35 and $2,000, which is similar to what Apple Pay Later offered.

Apple also announced an upcoming integration with PayPal.

Starting next year, customers in the U.S. will be able to see their PayPal balance when using their PayPal debit card in the Wallet app on the iPhone, according to Apple.

Having the ability to now be able to see my PayPal balance from the PayPal debit card (within the Apple Wallet app) will be awesome

I’m now starting to use my PayPal debit card a lot more because of the 5% cash back that it currently offers (on a selected monthly category)

In my case, I always select the restaurant category because that’s where I spent the most money and I’ve been able to get 5% back on all of my takeout purchases since I started using my PayPal debit card last month

The feature is great and always good to see Apple incorporating third parties into their systems. However BNPL is awful all round, and I say that as someone who has fallen into that hole many times

Reminder: PayPal is a terrible company. There are countless stories of them freezing user funds for things that aren't illegal. There's practically no reason to use them anymore. Also, buy now and pay later services can be predatory... even if it's 0% interest (it isn't).

Agreed. Account of 15 years got suspended with no given reason. Even with that, I’m glad to see some semblance of debit / checking integration with the wallet app. Really just wish Apple would offer checking accounts or provide API for banks to securely pipe user
Financial info into the wallet app.

It’s funny how the wallet app is slowly becoming what Elon Musk envisioned the original x.com to be.

That may be the case if you're receiving a lot of money on PayPal, but as a payment service that shouldn't be an issue.

I prefer to use ApplePay, but not everyone offers it and I then often prefer to use PayPal rather than handing out my debit/credit card information on the internet.

I was hoping this meant PayPal integration with Apple Pay, but nope. Chase Freedom Flex has a promotion now where you earn 5% cash back when you pay through PayPal. So it would’ve been nice if they let you pay for any Apple Pay purchases with PayPal.

Also prefer Apple Pay first, but my Capital One card offers a virtual card in their app that I use for the occasional purchase where I need to supply a card. And yeah, I don't want to ever give out debit cards. T-Mobile is the only one who gets the debit card, and my bank put a daily limit on the card for me, just in case TM gets breached, I could minimize the hassle.

Avoid Klarna like the plague. I made the mistake of using them once.

As soon as they get your email address they pester you to death with payment reminders (even if it’s all done automatically), direct debit amount reminders, reminders that you have a zero balance, reminders that you have nothing to pay this month and all sorts of other annoying crap.

And they won’t let you opt out of them as they state they are essential (which they aren’t).

Wow! Good to know.

I signed up for a Klarna card, but haven't used it yet - I just thought it's good to have options.

90% of the time I use my Amex debit card where/when it's possible.
Then I have Visa debit bank card too.
When I need to use a MasterCard I have credit card for it. Don't have to use it as such though.

This was a few years ago ~2020 if I recall correctly. They may have corrected their spammy ways now.
Eventually I got so fed up with them that I automatically forwarded every unwanted email back to the customer service email address.
They eventually closed my account after multiple requests and the “your payment this month is £0” spam stopped at that point.

Monzo Bank in the UK have the Flex card / facility integrated into Apple Pay (a recent update means you can select payment plan in Wallet directly rather than having to follow up in the Monzo app) - this is a great feature where you can stick within the three month window for 0% interest.

I never keep funds on PayPal I have it setup to pull from my checking account when I make purchases but I would never use it like it’s a bank

I use Klarna regularly and don’t seem to get spam emails. Only stuff correlating to my actual purchases or upcoming payments. Truth be told unless you have notifications on for all email I don’t really get bothered by what she’s up in my email inbox

Had a relative get pulled into a “90 days same as cash!” scheme on a large purchase.

Me: What happens after the 90 days?
Them: Whaddya mean, it’s same as cash!
Me: 🙄🤦‍♂️

Fortunately they managed to get it paid for, but was not pretty.

Nothing is stopping you from adding your banks debit card to Apple Wallet. That's been a feature since day one.

So the downside is...more email? I get hundreds of emails like this from dozens of companies. Grocery stores, clothing stores, airlines, banks, food delivery. By now I think most people have developed an instinct for what emails need to be opened. App notifications can be turned off or silenced on your end.
