My question: do these CPUs have hyper-threading?

Sorry, the i3 quad-core is a joke for a desktop computer.

I think none of these CPUs have HT enabled. Maybe the i7, but I somehow doubt.
These are mostly the i3 and i5 CPUs from this generation (i3-8100, i5-8400 etc.)

In term of power, the Intel UHD630's GPU performance-wise is much under the Iris Plus 640 you can find in entry level iMac (2.3 Ghz) and in the entry level Macbook Pro (13.3).

Anyway, hope, that everymac.com will get the right data soon posted...

I believe you are correct. No mention of IR on the Tech Specs page and no visual indication of a receiver. This does indeed make me a little sad. Maybe someone makes a USB IR solution. And I suppose there's always Home Sharing to ATV (until they decide to axe that too), though I know that's not the same thing.

Who uses IR in this day and age? I have the 2014 Mini and use the Harmony remote that controls it using Wifi and Bluetooth. No IR.

Please explain... Music production is exactly what I plan on using the Mac Mini for!
Read what your software provider write about it. Steinberg/Yamaha does not support it and the users trying anyway says that it does not work properly and other have very big problem with the low latency performance with the hardware with T2. Why I dont know but they have not been able to solve it for a half year and they don't even say that they will be able to fix it. And until we have working system we can not say that it is ok with the T2 and we can not prove that it the T2. But it does not work good at the moment. Make sure that you have the guarantee form the software vendor before you buy this or get a older model.

Awesome upgrade. This could be the heart of a serious platform with the 4 TB3 ports. It looks like it has a real cooling system and should be able to run well.

I don't need one, but as usual the one you "really" want (3.2/32/1TB) is $2500. ($2600 if you add 10Gbe) That number has been rock solid for me for over 30 years!

Usual MR whiners complaining about the usual crap.

This is the ideal eGPU machine.

Indeed, actually I want to get rid of my big tower PC but still have need for a Windows machine. I can have a decent spec NUC or something like it, get an EGPU and both the NUC and Mini are golden for my needs. Modular is the way.

There already is a USB IR solution that’s been available for ages:

In general it's true, but my main emphasis is on reducing clutter. I'm going to retire an old Mac Pro that I used for years, but still defer to on occasion. I want to port my whole environment straight over without wasting a lot of time, and I'm at nearly 1TB on the main drive.

I'll just move the old gal to my storage room and disregard the Mini.

Yeah, I hear you. I have a 27" iMac so my externals (one for a crap-ton of media and one gigantic one for Time Machine) sit behind it and I don't have to see them.

Many, many people. I use a Harmony One, which I (and many other harmony users) believe to be a superior design than anything they've come out with since. You'd be amazed at how much of a market there still is for these remotes and replacement batteries, etc. IR is definitely not dead. Not to mention, so much simpler to setup.

So can we open it up and add our own SSD and RAM? The prices are RIDICULOUS!
1TB upgrade +$800?????? SERIOIUSLY?
32GB RAM upgrade +$600?????? WTF?

My 2005 mac mini can get me a huge $40 trade in credit. I'm so torn I don't know what to do. LOL, just kidding.
You know Apple just want it for the scrap metal value, to have it whittled down in order to resell it back to you again!

the i7 is hyperthreaded. All 8th gen i7 parts have been.

i3 = quad core / 4 threads.
i5= Six core / 6 threads.
i6 = Six core / 12 threads.

About the right time to shop for an used one and replace the HD with a nice SSD and that's it, the Mini purpose is over if we need to add adapters, cables, external drives and so on.

In my opinion, given the price point, a slightly bigger casing with more room for cooling and upgrades would have been welcome but Apple is the new Fort Knox

Well, I like the Space Grey...

And the specs are good, well, once you bump the RAM & storage up a notch...

But at that point, if you add in an Apple keyboard & mouse, and an Apple-approved 27" LG TB3 display, AND an Apple-approved Blackmagic Design Vega 56 eGPU; well at that point the base iMac Pro is actually cheaper...

It is fraud. You can not replace the storage or extend it. And it is flash so it has a short life time.

Now that the pricing's been posted, I'm reconsidering my enthusiasm. With 1 tb of storage, 64 gb of RAM and the i7 processor, a mini would cost $3500. I could upgrade the RAM later, but not the SSD (which is the big-ticket item). That's Mac Pro pricing, without comparable graphics power. I'd still need to spend about a grand on an external graphics card. I guess I'll stick with my old Mac Pro for now.

Wait till you see the all new RED inspired price tag in 2019 for the 7.1.

And it also shows the big fortune we have to get Mojave support on the 5.1. I am so happy with my 5.1, the NVM support, the upcoming Nvidia RXT 2080 support and the new firmware microcode upgrade. I am still care free for another 3 years with that last LightRoom NON Cloud license. Long live the 5.1 !
