Since I'm out of the loop since my days of selling computers at Best Buy lol, I always thought i3 were hyper threaded dual cores...this is said to be a quad core i3...does it have hyper threading? If not what makes it different then a Quad Core i5? Maybe no turbo boost?

The i5 has more cores and more threads but seem pretty similar when it comes to performance vs price.

My GOD what a juicy and sexy Mac Mini! This was far better than expected.
It's extremely tempting to buy this one, even though I don't need it:
My late 2012 Mac Mini is so good (running its original Mountan Lion OS) that it does all I throw at it with no problem or delay.
So unfortunately I cannot persuade myself to shell out for this one. But I'm gonna keep tryin'... :p

What monitor are people matching with the mac mini? LG Ultrafine 4/5k or regular USB-C LG 4k monitors?

(assuming I get one, which is likely tbh) will be initially pairing it with the Dell P2715Q I already have, but will be looking to upgrade to some matching 4K pair of displays later, or possibly LG 5K if there isn't anything newer by then. And *that's* a reason to like the mac mini over the iMac: You don't have to buy the expensive display at the same time.

I have two 2TB SSDs in my current 2012 mini. Does anyone happen to know what sort of performance hit I'd see if I turned both of these drives into externals? I would probably opt for the cheaper traditional usb, rather than thunderbolt.

With Office, Vmware, and just a handful of other apps, I push 350GB. Not sure how Fusion or Office would handle being installed and run from a USB drive.

I believe so. I was shocked at the price
Two clicks on the buy page and the Mac Mini quickly became 2 grand! That is insane! I can see they are aiming at Pros with these though. With all the photos of farms and highlighting rack mounting and stacking for more horse power. Just like Apple, take the best deal in the Mac world and upgrade it to almost "Pro" status and price it into the stratosphere. Which is fine, but how about a spec bumped mini at $499 to fill the void?

So disappointed....

anxiously awaiting the iFixit reports :)

I do wish they had a model starting price near $499 then upgrades up into the thousands.
one appeal to the Mini was the intro to mac cost. I do love the pro features but not everyone needs those and a $499 price point would open up to a lot of people. I'm sure Apple has done their market research and believes the numbers prove what will be best for them, but I will still wish.

All that said, if the RAM and internal Storage can be upgraded/replaced then I'll likely be getting one.

I reboot mine on upgrades only. been that way since January of 2015. Never had excessive power usage or heating issues.

I know. I do the same.

That's why I want to know the (minimum/idle) power usage of these new babies. 150W (new maximum) is too much compared to 15W (old minimum).

$799 ouch even with inflation. Those are $399 Inspiron specs.

The $399 inspiron on dell's business site includes an i3, 4GB of RAM, a 1TB SATA, USB 3.0. Dell does throw in a keyboard, mouse, and DVD drive. Apple as usual charges a premium, but it's not completely ridiculous considering the new mini's I/O options and value of OSX.

I can’t believe that no one has mentioned they removed the “audio in” jack. I use this all the time when I import music from my turntable (vinyl records) on my 2012 Mac mini.

Why would they remove audio in jack?
The "headphone" jack on my mid-2010 Mac mini also has an audio in pin, it's a 4-pin jack. I can listen to music in stereo and also talk via the built-in microphone of my Bose QC-25 via a single connector. I'm pretty sure the 2018 Mac mini has the exact same 3.5mm headphone port.

If it's not enough, you can always buy an external USB3/USB-C/TB3 sound module. There's even "white USB sound card" on eBay (search for those words) for around two dollars. IMHO the music even sounds better/clearer out of this 2$ USB dongle than it does coming from the headphone port of my Mac mini and Mac OS X 10.9.5 didn't even need a driver and recognized it automatically.

My main issue is it's not just the SSD which has to be reliable. Now ANY failure basically means the data is lost.

This has just caused me to rethink my storage paradigm. Now, I will go for less storage and invest in the QNAP TB3 NAS and external SSDs. The access speeds of TB3, USB3, and 10Gb Ethernet make it functionally fast enough.

Now, the system storage is just that, my data will be external.

Think that's fundamentally the right approach, with which the base 128GB internal storage will be plenty.

The CPUs in the new Mac mini
EDIT: Core i3-8100 - 4c/4t - highest clock speed
Core i5-8500B - 6c/6t
Core i7-8700B - 6c/12t

Geekbench numbers are not to be found on i5 and i7, so will be interesting to see.

8th Gen upped cores on i3 to 4 and i5 and i7 to 6 w/ and w/o HT. All have turbo boost except the i3. Basically, it’s the Wild West now.
