The new Mac mini? The minimum will be a hardware specific build of 10.14.1. Apple prevents earlier version of macOS from booting.Anyone know (or know where to find) the minimum os? Some apps are still buggy in Mohave so I can't buy yet if I can't downgrade to at least 10.13.
Core i3-8100 - 4c/4t4-6 cores could be i5 or i7, right? Anyone know which it is? The clock speed is meaningless without knowing that detail.
Edit: Someone above said i7. Nice! The article should've said this.
It’s ridiculous to compare a maxed out mini, which has twice as much SSD capacity and twice as much RAM, to a base iMac Pro.
When configured in the closest like configuration—i7, 1 TB SSD, 32GB RAM and 10GbE—the mini is $2,599. That’s not iMac Pro money (but of course the mini is no iMac Pro).
curious, and likely silly question. i have a mac mini late 2012, currently connecting to a thunderbolt display using thunderbolt (1 i believe, cable). for the new mac mini would i then use hdmi and would i still support 2500x1440?
Core i7-8700B - 6c/12t

Is it an Apple Thunderbolt Display? If it is, you would buy a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter ($49) and use that instead - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207266curious, and likely silly question. i have a mac mini late 2012, currently connecting to a thunderbolt display using thunderbolt (1 i believe, cable). for the new mac mini would i then use hdmi and would i still support 2500x1440?
They are all desktop class CPUs. Apple is using the FCBGA-21140 versions because they are soldered to the board instead of in a socket.Core i7-8700B - 6c/12t

Huh, also from Intels site: https://ark.intel.com/products/126686/Intel-Core-i7-8700-Processor-12M-Cache-up-to-4-60-GHz- it states it's a Desktop chip?![]()
Please give it a proper thought before answering. They TOOK 4 years and during that time mac mini received no updates whatsoever. Now, after 4 years we get this.
That was my point. They could have kept updating the mini gradually and arrive to this point as well. The 4 year gap was unwarranted and served no purpose rather than just pure lack of interest from Apple.
These are completely different technologies. The prices are not comparable. The production processes are different. In the computer world smaller and faster cost more. SSD is both smaller and faster. Yes, Apple does charge a premium for their upgrades. They aren't going back to spinning drives any sooner than they will add a DVD drive or serial port.

It would have been sweet had it grown a bit more, added a PCI-E slot or two and still offered a 2.5" disk option.
That majorly sucks. I'm still bothered that mobile i5/i7 get the same marketing name as non-mobile. Huge difference. You always have to go find the exact model online to know what you're really getting.Core i7-8700B - 6c/12t

That would be the "8700" not the "8700B"
Notice how you completely ignored my point that you over-configured the SSD and RAM on the mini so you could say it’s over $4,000?Notice how you completely forgot about the GPU? Or the 27" 5K screen? Or the included keyboard and mouse? If you are able to utilize a GUI OS without the use of a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, more power to you; if you aren't then please compare like with like.
No PC is sold with less standard.
I just got a m.2 WD 1TB for $104 a week ago (abeit coupon mistake by Staples).Samsung 860 EVO 500GB M.2 SATA Internal SSD (MZ-N6E500BW) $107.99
If you don't understand the difference between SATA and PCIe performance, perhaps you shouldn't be arguing specs. PCIe SSDs are very expensive compared to their SATA counterparts.Samsung 860 EVO 500GB M.2 SATA Internal SSD (MZ-N6E500BW) $107.99
You too.I just got a m.2 WD 1TB for $104 a week ago (abeit coupon mistake by Staples).
Doesn't matter, people are stupid enough to pay this all time high Apple tax to purchase inferior computers.
I don't consider that a desktop computer. Even the cheapest PC towers at Costco have 16Gb RAMWhy even say something so obviously and provably wrong?

Interesting info. The power profile is configurable; Apple may or may not supply more than 65W to the CPU. It depends on the capacity of the cooling system, environmental operating conditions, capacity of the power supply, the VRMs that supply the CPU and other factors. We won’t really know how the mini performs under load at various thread counts until it’s tested. But you’re likely to see similar behavior, i.e. reductions in clock speed as the number of cores/threads increases.Have a look here

Or the iPad, depending on how you feel about the iPhone.
