"Stripe will be the first payment platform to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone to their business customers, including Shopify, and additional payment platforms and apps will follow later this year..."

I think it's pretty clear that Square will be able to use this feature, too.
Yeah, if anything it actually helps Square by lowering its barrier to entry. Merchants can choose to use Square to process payments without needing to buy Square hardware first.

Along with so many other vendors such as PayPal, Zelle, Square.
Umm, no. As a former SB owner, I can tell you now, Square, Stripe, and similar vendors have nothing to worry about. Not only can you get a much better POS setup for less than the price of an iPhone, but you also need robust software for things like POS, analytics, payroll, etc.

Even Zelle and Venmo aren’t in any danger. Most people I know transfer money via software, not when they’re in person, and they’re cross platform.

I see this as a non-event, even for most iPhone users.

In a country where contactless is pretty universal, I really hope whatever needs to happen to get this to the UK gets done… this would be so good for in person payments such as selling my old stuff on Facebook.

I'm not sure I follow why - this feature is a developer API, not a complete app. The idea is that Square and other POS apps can use this as an alternative to the normal NFC payment flow.
I think a lot of people are confusing it for a payment processing service instead of a feature.

I don't understand, who is the merchant processor? Apple? Or is this a API that existing processors can tap into?

I wonder what's in it for Apple though... Will other apps have to use Apple pay and thereby pay a fee?

merchants in the U.S. will be able to accept contactless payments through supported iOS apps on an iPhone XS or newer. At checkout, the merchant will simply prompt the customer to hold their own iPhone or Apple Watch, contactless credit or debit card, or other digital wallet near the merchant's iPhone, and the payment will be securely completed using NFC technology.
Making pick pocket thieves lives easier. Good for you, Apple.

No longer will they need to risk getting caught by attempting to pick pocket someone on the subway. Now, they just have to hold their iPhone next to someone's butt wallet in their back pocket to initiate a contactless payment with their credit/debit card.

Don’t you think a company of Apple’s scale could launch a feature like this in multiple countries if they really wanted? It’s a question of effort and desire.
What makes you think they aren't working on expanding it to other countries? They probably announced it for the US first to get it out of the door since it's the quickest to get regulatory approval (Apple being an American company).

Sounds like 5-10 years before this makes it to my country, if ever, since just last year got Apple Pay.

It's more than that. Most importantly, amenable countries/regulators/banks along with a business case that makes sense for Apple.

I haven't thought of this before, but I wonder what kind of limitations (besides locations) and how much Apple takes as a cut (has taken). Too lazy to look it up, but maybe someone here knows

Will this idea be extended to allow non-businesses to exchange money? So I could pay, say, my brother half of a bill using just our phones?

When that happens, and is compatible with many phones, cash will truly be dead.

That Apple Card and cash have been available in the US for years and, as yet, as far as I’m aware, they are yet to expand anywhere else. I’m not even aware of a mention of expanding elsewhere.
