ABC News just did a story on him. He's a 71 year old grandfather with 6 (?) grandkids. He owns a blue nano.

First Coldplay and now Johnny Cash ?! Sounds staged, I have a hard time believing this guy was ACTUALLY the one that purchased the 10billionth song...It would have been some less know artist probably i mean come on...Apple's does this big announcement - they pick an artist that they (Jobs) like, and feature it with the winner (an American, of course)... But who cares anyway, good for him that he won!

You do realize that contest are heavily regulated and that computerized records from the iTMS determine the winner. As for an American winning, it's pretty logical. The US is Apple's largest market and it was after midnight in Europe.

I did not know that, and I'm not sure I believe that to be true either. The time zone thing is obvious, I get that.. We'll see; if next time the winning song is from John Mayer, you owe me a beer okay?! ;)

That is so cool! I'll bet he's on the cover of next month's AARP magazine.

It's great that he uses a Nano and iTunes. I'm sure his kids and grandkids will help him plow through that gift card in no time.

It could have been amusing if the winning song was something obscure, like a no-name musician's cover of a TV theme song or some 10-minute electronic piece. I wonder if they secretly reject the winner in favor of the first runner-up who bought something cool.

Cash not cool? I listen to a lot of modern rock and most of it is regurgitated beatles, johnny cash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, led zep, Jimmy Hendrix and other acts from the 1960's to the late 1980's. even Wolfmother is nothing more than late 1960's rock on Auto-Tune. very little original music today and blues based rock as a genre is almost played out

i'm actually surprised that Eric Clapton hasn't sued Wolfmother yet

I wasn't aware that taxation is such an issue in the US when it comes to prize money. Do you also pay taxes when you win in the lottery or at game shows like Jeopardy?

lottery and any other gambling winnings are reported on form 1099G. you can deduct losses. some hard core gamblers pick up scratch off lottery tickets on the street and keep them to prove losses

Good for him! I wonder how long it will take him to spend 10K worth of music?

I don't understand why people think that it has to be some setup for really popular artists to be the nth billion download and that it's more likely for it to actually be some less known artist.

Popular artists get downloaded waaaay more than little known ones, so basic probabilistic reasoning would tell you that any given download is more likely to be a very popular artist.
