I've found Camera control extremely useful. After setting it to double click, it's the only way I open my camera now because it's the only consistent and immediate way to open it no matter what state my phone is in (Home Screen, in app, NC, CC, locked screen, screen off). And because my finger is already on it when I open the camera, I quickly press it again to capture a fleeting moment (click for photo, hold for video). Also depending how I'm holding my phone, it can be the only way to switch cameras and press the shutter without having to switch grips or use my other hand if it's not free. For sure it takes practice, but to me it's worth it because it enables me to get into taking photo/video quicker and has enabled me to capture moments that I would have missed otherwise.

I'm probably not the target for the foldable, but if I was I'd definitely be pleased that camera control is going to be implemented on it.

It's by far the dumbest innovation ever introduced on iPhone. It's impossible to use one-handed in any situation, unless you're missing a limb maybe, and two-handed it's way faster to use the screen. I really hope this is a false rumour. I don't know a single person who uses camera control besides a standard shutter button.

On my 17 Pro Max, the camera control button is the most used of all the buttons. It gets pressed every time I pickup the phone by the lower half. And that's about the only time I remember there's a camera control button.
You can always set it to double click to launch the camera if you’re triggering it that often by mistake.

Camera control cannot even zoom properly in small incremental steps like you do on the screen.
That’s my experience. Easier to use the screen controls than that stupid button. And I forget it’s there to use it for opening the camera app and only accidentally open it all the time. They really added unnecessary costs until they allow us to use it how we want. Scrolling pages in Safari or books would be a useful feature and allow us to open any app we want. That makes too much sense for Apple as someone else put it here. Apple cannot even call it a button.

Camera control is really useful, I use it all the time to open the camera app instead of the control on the lock screen that I used before...

The only thing that concerns me is that they would prioritize an ultra wide over a telephoto. The only thing I miss about my Air is the lack of a telephoto, even a 2x would be incredibly useful.

cammera control sucks. Has anyone found anything useful for it? The one thing I want (being able to change focus) so i can shoot through windows it doesnt do. Also can apple please de-f**k the camera app? Why is every control overloaded? Why they move the shutter button in and mput the (hidden) menu under it? Why is it swipe left right up down on different parts. I usually have to spend about 30 seconds un-f**king whay ever mode ive accidentally switched it to before i can take a pictue. Its horrendous

Apple seems to just plain hate manual focus. I've tried so many third party camera apps over the years and this is basically the only reason. I don't get it. I had exactly the same thought you had, finally an easy way to control focus but no, just like in the rest of the Camera app there is no focus control at all.

Why doesn't Apple adopt a mount system, so people can add telephoto capability if they want to carry the lens separately.

After accidentally hitting the camera control button a few times, I disabled it. I'm just glad they had a setting to do that.

I miss the ultra wide way more than a tele. And the front cam although wider is wuite awkward to use in that way.

does anyone use it other than as a shortcut to opening the camera app?

I found it to slow to use while taking pics. Touching the screen is quicker, despite the phone app ui being so poor for making quick changes (it is however quick for accidentally taking video instead of pics)
I disabled it after about 2 months and haven't turned it back on since. Complete waste of space.

The foldable will definitely be eSIM only. For me, lack of telephoto lens is a huge downside. Definitely not planning on getting one without it. Competition like the Z Fold has been having it for a long time. Of course Apple will definitely advertise it having some kind of zoom like how the normal 17 has a 2x optical quality zoom. Hopefully within 2 to 3 years, it will get a proper telephoto lens.

A folding phone is nothing but a long series of compromises. The only thing that matters is the OS and how Apple markets it.
There are different useful sizes of foldables. No one-size-fits-all. Here is a famous scene in which the selfie is taken with a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7. That compact size is remarkable.

If you’re not taking video, just use the pano for a short segment, or the front camera it’s wide. If its video, and its landscape, then I’m curious to what you videoing that need ultra wide. If it’s portrait, you’re holding it wrong.
