But if the people who want a 4" phone buy the larger phone anyway, what difference does it make to Apple? It only makes sense if they lose sales to their competitors, IMO.

Customer satisfaction. Some people dislike their 6 due to the size. Theres also no proof that people who want a 4 inch phone are or aren't buying iPhones.

It would make the most sense just to give the option to everyone. I wouldn't have gone from an iPod Touch to an iPhone many years back if I knew Apple was going to(possibly) stop making 3.5/4 inch phones.

Hmm...this is an interesting idea. Nothing says iPhones can only be launched in September.
The supply chain does. Even Apple is afraid to tamper with release schedules because there are some things that are out of their control.

I will never buy a phone over 4.5", my current phone is 4.7 and its way too big, the iphone 6 is ridiculously too big. If I cant reach the top left corner using one hand then its a deal breaker.
That's what I used to think until I got Apple Watch. Now I barely use my iPhone 6+ and when I do, it's a 2-handed occasion.

Customers (screaming): iPhone screens are too small! You need to make a bigger phone!
Apple: -releases bigger phone-
Customers (still screaming): iPhone screens are too big! You should go back to the smaller size!
Apple: -releases iPod Touch with A8 chip and then decides customers are going to whine no matter what they do-

Love my iPhone 6 Plus! :D

The vocal minority's always the loudest.

Perhaps what people thought was a 4" iPhone was really just the iPod touch. In one of Ming-Chi Kuo's reports he referenced a pink iPhone. Perhaps that was really the pink iPod touch.
I think Ming-Chi Kuo lacks any sort of creativity. He can look at numbers and supply chain rumors, but he doesn't have the ability to extrapolate that into real products.

I don't get why they would scrap it... I know plenty of people who got the 6, but would have preferred the 4" screen of the 5s because their hands are small...

Regardless if this rumor was even a possibility to begin with, you can be sure that Apple's done enough market research to have learned long ago that only a small percentage of their core consumer actually still wants a 4" iPhone. (I don't Apple's losing any sleep over it.)

Apple have been wrong on their market research before, and they will again. One tech website I read found that 60 percent of iPhone users wanted a larger screen and 40 percent did not. 40 percent is a lot of people, and while not a representation of the entire market, it does reflect that there are plenty of people who would like a smaller phone.

I'm not sure why anyone would have an objection to a 4 inch phone. It doesn't have any impact besides a positive one I know it would have for myself and numerous others who won't be upgrading until there is a 4 inch phone. (Or for myself, when my 5 looses software support, and I won't be buying a phone I can't comfortably use one handed).

This kills me. I'd pay the same for a 4-inch 6(whatever letter you want to put here) as the current 6. I owned the 6 and returned it- I can't understand why they won't release a 4-inch model, even if its just a 5S with slightly updated internals. Not everyone wants a huge phone that doesn't fit in a pocket!!

As someone with small hands (I wear a North Face size XS winter gloves) I can tell you the 6 is not only a very manageable phone size but also immensely enjoyable and productive. I love mine and the 4" feels claustrophobic now. I'd never go back. I was "scared" the 6 would be too big, and would have preferred a smaller version of the 6 before I bought it but that was just fear of the new.

I have no doubt you know people that long for a 4" and there is a certain % that also share that wish, but based on the iPhone's ASCI score (customer satisfaction) that's a small # as most iPhone 6 users are "very satisfied."

If Apple doesn't produce an iPhone 6C its not due to canibalization. Apple has repeated said it doesn't care about one of its products eating into another. If they were concerned about that they would have never released the iPhone, or the iPad, or the iPad mini, or the iPhone Plus. But Apple isn't going to make a product with no market and that is the real story behind the "c"; it's a dud because it was too expensive for its target demographic of lower income people looking for an inexpensive smartphone.

Apple is really at an existential moment here. Either they stay the course with the "we won't make a sub-standard product just to meet a price point while maintaining margins," or they are going to try to compete directly with Xiaomi. I would submit Apple is going to stay the course and is ready to cede the low end China market just as it has done in other markets.

Hopefully someone at Apple reads these pages. I still have a 4s and will only upgrade if something compelling comes along in a 3.5 or 4 inch body. The 6 is not a good design, too thin, slippery to hold. My dream phone would be 6s internals in a shape the same as the original iPhone, that was great to hold!

Oh well, as someone above says, if my phone breaks I will just get a 5s until that is obsolete. Shame.

The fate of the 6 Plus is intriguing.

If history is anything to go on, the 5C gets discontinued, the 5S becomes "Free" and the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus get price cuts.

Whether the iPhone 6 Plus will disappear completely is interesting. I'm leaning towards it staying.

I see the 6 dropping to $99, the 6 Plus getting axed and Apple announces the 6s and 6s Plus. Hopefully the 6s Plus continues to have some exclusive feature that encourages people to spend $100 more besides just a larger screen (I don't think OIS stays on the Plus model only forever).

Surely if sales_revenue(6C + 6S/6S+) > sales revenue (6S/6S+) , then that is effective cannibalisation STRATEGY, and a win-win for both Apple and those customers looking to upgrade but keep a 4" screen.

You also need to know what is squeezing production and distribution capacity. Launching three new phones
simultaneously may be too much. I'd be inclined to believe Spring 2016 rather than late 2015 if there is a 6-.

Let the mourning begin.

'Twas a time when Apple made flagship phones that were a user-friendly size under the magnificent Steve Jobs. Alas, such times are but a fading memory.

Perhaps, one day, Apple will deign to make a pair of rose-tinted spectacles, so that the present may bear at least some token comparison to the wonders of yore.

4" is increasingly a useless phone screen size. Yes I know all the die hard iPhone fanatics claim their 4" screen is superior to any other phone size, but after years of using the iPod Touch next to a larger phone size, I just find I can't use it properly. Content is too small to touch and interact with properly, many apps are just being designed around a larger interface these days, internet browsing is extremely annoying and I can't stand "mobile" versions of websites, and in general I just feel the size is too small for touch screen keyboard to be practical. With a 5.5" phone screen I am using now, I can browse the internet in "desktop mode" without too much inconvenience, and using the touch keyboard actually works.

I know Apple held off for so long to create larger phones, but I think its time now for fanbois to let go and unless you are 3ft tall and wear doll's cloths, or like your jeans to seem painted on, even a 6" screen phone will fit in most pant pockets and are still easily usable by one hand. When I see people texting on an small iPhone 4 it's just silly how cramped their hands are gripping the phone and hunched over to see properly.

Also, on a more pragmatic level, 4" screen sizes with "Retina" resolutions are probably getting more and more difficult to source, or getting more expensive, as most other phone brands, including Apple, have opted for larger screens. I think practically Apple will even have to update the iPod Touch screen eventually if they want to keep their insane profit margins in the future.

It's time to let go of 4" phone screens, Apple has.

This is why we need to thank Android supporters... Competition is good. In absence (of competition), people who wanted 4" iPhone won't get their 4" iPhone and have to compromise for something bigger.

Hey...hold on to those iPhone 5 models currently in your possession might be the only 4" we ever see. Now how can I get iOS 6 back??

No you're wrong, 4 inches is just useless in YOUR opinion for YOUR purposes. I have average- large hands and I can not use the iPhone 6 one handed. Its next to useless for me. The iPhone 5/5S form factor remains perfect for me. Content is fine, apps are fine everything is fine and perfectly readable, and the phone is a convenient size to fit nicely into my pocket. And the most important thing, I can comfortably use it one handed.

How about its time for people to start accepting that there is no size that is perfect for everyone. Just as the 4.7 and 5.5 work for many people, so does the 4. There is nothing superior about any of them, accept what works best for each individual person.

I beg to differ. 5.5" or even 6" is way too big to be a phone.

I define a phone as something I could carry easily and fit into my pocket. 5.5" and 6" are not as portable as I would like. Even 4.7" is a tad too big. For me I think the sweet spot is maybe around 4.5".

This seems to open up the door for the competition to take some of the market back from Apple.

Let one of the android manufacturers make a hi end 4" phone. Internals like the note 5 or m9 , just smaller.

It probably won't work as iPhones are winning the war but they should try.
