Why does it have to be an incentive for apple? Why are you standing up for supporting their screwing over of people who liked 4 inch phones. I wouldn't have bought into the iPhone if I knew that they were going to do a 180 degree turn and stop selling what was (and still is) a perfect phone size.
You don't have any proof that people will just happily upgrade to a bigger phone. Plenty of iPhone users switched to different brands when apple didn't go to a larger screen, so whats to stop people doing the same now, as they want a smaller screen? I'd rather do that then have a useless iPhone 6.
The iPhone has sold in record numbers regardless of screen size. The iPhone 6 smashed all previous records. So if Apple doesn't make a 4" phone, will you be jumping to Android?
Why does there have to be incentive for Apple? How about $$$? Apple isn't screwing anyone over. The consumer can vote with their wallet. My money is on people will complain until the cows come home and buy whatever Apple offers anyway. There has been ample evidence of that a MR since the 6 was released. Apple knows their market far better than anyone here. The forums are mostly tech people. Apple caters to the masses.
A year ago everybody was all "When is Apple going to release a larger iPhone?" Now we've got a group of "Gosh, why won't Apple release a smaller iPhone?"
The incentive is that it keeps loyal customers happy. Apple could give back by just continuing to make a 4 inch option. Its not that hard, and I don't know why people are against it. I will be forced to jump ship when my 5 or potential 5S becomes outdated.
Apple is screwing people over. There are also plenty who won't upgrade, and I think you proved my point by talking about Macrumours. Sure there are heaps on here who have upgraded regardless. There are also heaps on this thread who haven't upgraded and will continue to not upgrade. The point however is that Screen size is something important to the non techie people who aren't on Macrumours. Maceumours people will upgrade regardless due to technology, where as your average user is less brand loyal and things like form factor are more important.
Apple has gotten the market wrong plenty of times in the past anyway.
I just can't understand why they can't just offer 3 sizes. They offer 3 laptop sizes, and they offered all sorts of iPod sizes.
Ok, I want a flip phone with a 2" screen. Apple is screwing me too since they don't make one. Or I need a rugged phone for construction work, Apple doesn't have anything that fits the bill. I need a water resistant phone, again, Apple comes up short. Some people don't want a smart phone, just a simple phone to make calls now and again. Which model does Apple have to meet that need? Apple is screwing millions of people world wide. But they keep making record profits quarter after quarter. Why don't they make a rugged flip phone?
Apple never supported Blu-ray. Apple was late to the party with USB 3. Apple used Firewire. The incentive didn't matter then either.
Of course they can offer three sizes if they want to. They could also make the base storage 32GB which is what many people want. They could have put 2GB of RAM in the iPhone and the iPad Air, but they didn't. Money. Profit. That's what it's all about, regardless of what the consumer wants.
I wonder if Apple will just drop the price of the 6/6 Plus and kill the 5C (or maybe keep it around for markets like India)? Having 6 phones in the lineup seems nuts. Maybe the 6 Plus doesn't get discounted and only the 6 hangs around as the mid tier option?
Well it would sell more because the 4 inch version would be cheaper. It's not the fact people want a smaller iPhone it's the fact it would be cheaper.
I've not heard one person complaining about the iPhone 6 size. It seems to be apple fanatics who can't adjust to change who want a 4 inch phone. If it was up to them the iPhone 6 would be 3.8 inches.
You have not been listening - there are plenty of people (maybe not a majority but still a substantial number) who say they want a premium phone in a smaller size. The price is not the issue size is! Many of us for whom size is an issue have held on to the 5 or 5s and are waiting for a new small phone before we upgrade. For me sell it for the same price as the bigger phones and I will still choose the smaller one.
Except that the customers screaming for a bigger iPhone never were the same that now scream for a smaller iPhone. "Customers" are not a huge, homogenous blob, you know?Customers (screaming): iPhone screens are too small! You need to make a bigger phone!
Apple: -releases bigger phone-
Customers (still screaming): iPhone screens are too big! You should go back to the smaller size!

Likely profitability. If an iPhone 6c maybe breaks even, an iPhone 6s makes a bunch of money and an iPhone 6s+ makes a bunch of money, why bother with the 6c? Apple has become so big that it's not going to waste time on a product line that doesn't show promise for making money. I can't say I miss my smaller iPhone 5s now. My hands aren't even the largest. My mom, whose hands are smaller than mine, wants to get the 6+ or whatever that size is when she makes her next upgrade. I have mostly adjusted to the almost-one-handed usability of the iPhone 6, so that doesn't bug me.
The only people I hear complaining about the screen size is on this forum. In the real world I have not heard anyone complain about the screen size.
If screen size was such an issue iPhone 6 and 6+ wouldn't have been so successful.
