But if you live in the US, Russia and China can’t do anything to you in real life. On the other hand you have FBI and CIA who can definitely find you

Have you considered that the US 'intelligence' operatives may actually be colluding with their Russian and China counterparts? I hate to break it to you, but if the FBI and CIA can find you, the Russians and Chinese already have.

Exactly. The US and European governments and companies spy on us and are quite eager to censor information in the name of protecting us from “misinformation.” They do so less prominently than China of course but they do it. I’m not really worried about the Chinese government because they can’t do jack to me. Besides, if the Chinese government is interested in my private information, they’ll just buy it from Zuckerberg or Google.

I think privacy is a fundamental human right, don’t get me wrong… but if I’m forced into a situation where a state is spying on me…I’d rather it not be my own.

Wouldn't we all? I hate to break this to you, but that red line was passed in 2001 in the US with the ironically titled 'Patriot Act'.

The difference is on one side your content may be deleted, on the other side you end up in prison for 10+ years

That distinction is becoming increasingly blurred in the US. Only partisan Communists would disagree.

For now they can't do anything. A year or two and some "Telegram leak" will make a lot of people scary about their data and privacy. As for the FBI, CIA and others - well I don't sell drugs or do anything illicit, why should I care then? Unlike Russia and China they (US agencies) cannot arrest me for supporting either party or candidate or voicing my opinions on some rather controversial issues

"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

The approval of the WeChat update for Apple's upcoming iPhone lineup is likely to quell speculation about a deteriorating relationship between the two companies, and suggests Apple is committed to maintaining WeChat's presence on its devices, given the app's critical importance in the Chinese market.

More like Tencent called Apple's bluff. This is one reason Apple needs to chill out with this App Store bullying. They can pull that on most companies, but the tail is wagging the dog on this one.

All this did was make Apple look weak by making a threat they would not follow through on. The iPhone needs Wechat more than Wechat needs the iPhone. And Apple needs to remember that lesson more broadly.

Hmm, Tencent's 40% stake in Epic Games might seem the reason that Tim Sweeney is so involved with opening up the iPhone, as it seems they both have a strategic alignment in their approaches to app store policies

WeChat. Yet another way for the CCP to monitor dissent and 'crimes' against its state.
What sinister implications are there? I’ve used WeiXin/WeChat for over two decades both inside and outside China. I assume, rightly or wrongly, that everything I and everyone else does on there is subject to scrutiny, we all know this and I don’t lose any sleep. Furthermore, I can write CCP on there without having to resort to comically theatrical ‘see-see-pee’ as posters on this thread have done.

Patriot is a traitor, traitor is a patriot.

It is like the people who hangs US flag everywhere without realizing that this flag represents colonial status.

The same with the current Russian flag where the top portion(white) represents capitulation. So the people who display a tricolor flag everywhere are actually "signalling" their desire to capitulate.

Apple „negotiating“ about revenue for in-app content?

Seems they‘re getting a taste of their own medicine, how it feels being confronted with a „gatekeeper“.

Apple is still lucky they are still selling iPhone's in China with the way things are going, as China is now banning Western technologies. Even Microsoft Windows is getting banned.

The keyword being "western" in technology. Maybe China has better technology than the "west." After all, it is the first economy of the world.

Lol, what do you care? Are you a Chinese citizen living in China?

I think we can drop the shtick that we’re concerned for the freedom of speech of people in an authoritarian state when your own federal government has a problematic relationship with American social media companies. See Meta and Zuckerberg’s recent statements for more details.

A wonderful display of whataboutism.

yeah apple's got no power here.
losing wechat wouldn't just kill them in china; but it'd kill all sales to the 10s of millions of chinese nationals living abroad globally who still need it.
