I seriously doubt that they're doing this to lower the environmental impact of purchasing an iPod.

I beg to differ with you...http://www.apple.com/environment/design/

They are conscious of the environment and while it may not be the primary reason for not including these items, it could be a secondary one

The site does make some good points, but the fact that the iMac and Mac mini "feature built-in wireless technologies such as AirPort and Bluetooth, reducing the need for PVC-insulated cabling" probably isnt going to be the deal breaker for global warming

Seriously though, the new boxes are only marginally bigger than the iPod themselves, compared with the original box designs (which yes, did include a few more things, but generally had a fair bit of wasted space). Now they can fit say 3 or 4 times more iPods in the back of a truck/plane, so in getting from the factory to you (which is a long way), thats a lot less trucks and planes, and a lot less emissions. Which when you're shipping millions of them, I suspect adds up.

As for the thread, I think there are 2 issues here;
a) less packaging and more environmentally friendly materials etc
b) included accessories

As marykay9507 suggested, they're generally independent; the reason they dont include a power adaptor anymore isnt because they want to save the environment. It's because Apple don't think everyone needs one and hence they can save themselves some money, and can charge a premium to customers who do want one. Pretty good business move.

The only place where a) and b) are both relevant is the iTunes CD. By not having to manufacture the CD, it probably only saves Apple a couple of cents. But it allows for a considerably smaller box, hence reducing the transport costs dramatically, which is good for both Apple and the environment.

You can't get music on the iPod without a computer.

So, it is not really necessary to provide a charger when the iPod can be charged through a computer.

I would like to have a charger included, but Apple must think it makes better business sense to sell the charger as an accessory, as it is not a necessity.

The environment? By selling all of those items individually in their own retail boxes they are multiplying the amount of trash they create by a significant margin.

What gets me is they don't put in a user manual anymore nor ear bud cloth things. wtf?

Also-
I think taking the iTunes disc out was a bit silly, because what if you don't have the internet and you just want to rip CD's into iTunes, the onto your iPod. You can't because greedy Apple want that 2 cents.

I hate loving Apple products.

How come they give iPhone users an iPod power adapter and not other iPod users...

Creative Zen do, Archos do, mind you not that i would every buy one..

I'm not familar with the Creative Zen, but the iPhone is a phone first, what cell phone have you ever bought that DIDN'T come with a charger? How many MP3 players can you buy that don't come with a wall charger, LOTS including the iPod.

I love how many excuses people can come up with to explain the lack of a wall charger. A wall charger is a must for me, and the fact that they don't include it is ridiculous. And, to add insult to injury, they charge $30 to buy one from them.

With due respect, I think you should just buy the wall charger if you can't live with it. Apple is a company, and they do want to maximize their profit margins.

Daze

Ahhhhhh the good ol' days of the firewire cable, dock, wall charger an the little foam covers for the earbuds...... I really miss those, every time i run the headphones just fall off my ear... the foam thingies prevented that. And lets not go to the times when the iPod included THE CABLE REMOTE!!!!!!!!!!!! i still have it, but my iPod Mini finally went to the grave.......:(

Yes they are cheaper to make, but they are also cheaper to buy. If Apple wants a 30% margin on all products it doesn't matter if it's 1,000 dollars or 10 dollars, they mark it up 30% over cost (or whatever their true markup figure is) which in turn makes them less profit (by a numbers standpoint).

300 x .30 = $90 (so 210 is their cost before markup)
150 x .30 = $45 (105 is their cost before markup).

A 30% markup would mean the costs before markup are $300/1.3 = 230.77 and $150/1.3 = $115.38.

i don't think it is a question of being cheap, but more towards reducing the packaging by removing unnecessary items

Sorry but I don't consider a power brick or a case for a device that is excessively scratch prone to be unnecessary. Right now as it stands my newly purchased 5G iPod Classic can't charge anywhere other then on my computer and I had to go out and buy an overpriced case that has aprox $5 in parts for about $35. To make matters worse my Previous iPod Photo that came with a set of video cables for just displaying photos on an external source, which seems to be pointless, came with said ton of accessories vs. my 5G that has the more practical function of displaying real video externally but doesn't come with a video cable. Instead I'm going to need to drop $50 on an accessory that costs Apple maybe. MAYBE $5 in parts and maybe another $5 in shipping and packaging.

Sorry guys but Apple is the new Microsoft when it comes to the music industry and they are screwing their customers over harder then MS ever did. At no point did MS nickel and dime their customers to death like Apple is doing with accessories, iPod Touch updates, 802.11N updates, etc. Apple, sadly, has turned scumbag and frankly if there was ANY alternative to the iPod for syncing with iTunes on a Mac I would have dropped the iPod is a hot second. Instead...I'm stuck with this....this juggernaut of a company who is laughing all the way to the bank with their billions.
The fanbois have lost sight that this is no longer the Apple of yesteryear where it was them against the giants of Microsoft and IBM, and that we need to support our Apple no matter what because they are the underdog and we are doing what is good for the industry. This is the new Apple. They are the corporate juggernaut who is doing the squashing who puts questionable business practices into place and we are stuck with just happily saying yes sir...may I have more....Personally I'm going to start saying no with my next computer. I'm not buying Apple again. If for no other reason then I hate their laptops and the soon to be 6th time I've taken it in for repairs, but that is a different rant, for a different day.

More sobbing...

Dude - this isn't a rant, this is just crying like a baby. First, you admitted that your previous iPod came with all the extras, so why do you need a power adapter??? And here you go - a case (for $8.95) similar to the quality that Apple used to include . Apple clearly states what is in the iPod box, and a case isn't included. But of course it is Apple's fault you paid $35 for a case. And yeah, it will cost you $49 for the AV cables from Apple, but that comes with the power adapter as well. At least be honest while you are crying. And can you please link something that shows that the power adapter and AV cables that are costing you $49 only cost $5 to make and $5 in packaging. I would like to know how much these things cost to produce - bet it is more than $5.

As for all your other stuff - geez if electronic gizmos are making you this miserable and angry, perhaps you should step away from the electronics and do some yoga or take a walk. Life is way too short to get this mad over electronics.

Apple is the MS of the music industry? So MS is the MS of the OS industry. What are you trying to say? I still don't see any parallels between Apple and Microsoft. What has Microsoft ever done tries to drive costs up? And if you go back to MS then how are you improving anything in your life? We still get OS X for a fair price.
Apple isn't out to do anyone wrong. Apple is a quality company that provides quality effort in their products.

...

iPods are sold in, what, dozens of countries? Hundreds? Presumably far more than at launch. If they were to include wall adapters with iPods, then they would have to change the factory process to ensure that every iPod has the correct wall adapter for the country it winds up in. You're no longer able to divert a shipment from New Zealand to fill a shortfall in Russia. Or else you irritate customers by supplying a US wall adapter and making them go off and find a plug adapter on their own, and you make them worry about whether the adapter can handle the voltage where they are without exploding (think of all the threads there are on the theme of "OMG I'm going to France/Germany/Spain/Australia/Canada/the wilds of Arkansas will my MacBook work there???"). It's worth the trouble, certainly, to provide the correct local wall charger for a laptop--which has no other way to charge, and is going to be used while plugged in for a good portion of the time. I fail to see how the same case could be made for an iPod.

FWIW, I've never had, used, or wanted a wall adapter for any of my iPods.

Quality. Yah right. Tell that to the macbook pro that is about to go in for repairs for the second time.....Apple replaced the laptop outright Nov of 06 after then 4th time I took it in. don’t even get me started on the POS that OS X is. I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve locked up Tiger over the last year and a half and the handful of times I’ve done it with Leopard. Again on 2 different systems. I can consistently freeze Leopard by changing networks and then changing locations…instant freeze.

As for what Apple is in comparison to Microsoft. They are the monopoly that has user’s locked in with several proprietary components. And they damn well know it. Apple is not some humble consumer friendly company. They are predatory in every sense of the word.

Maybe because I'm selling the previous iPod or should I pull and Apple and not give the person the adapter? God the fanbois really are out in force.

Well, its your decision to use what you use, but is this a common thing to change locations and network to cause freezing? Probably not, but what do I know. Regardless, use whatever OS is out there, but I can't imagine you can be bothered by OS X and then have nothing to say about Windows.
I just find it funny that people either have 0 problems and are happy, or people have a zillion problems and never satisfied. I think its more of a personality type if anything.
Go get an Abacus, maybe that'll ease your pain.

If you dare humor this obnoxious fanboi

How much did you pay for your old iPod? How many gigs was it? How long have you had it? How much did you pay for your new Classic? How many gigs was it? How much are you selling your old iPod for? If you didn't include your old charger in the sale, how much would you have to lower the price?

Please answer these few questions, because I would really like to see just how badly Apple is screwing you.

ok i use my wall charger all the time daily actually. Its in my kitchen so i can pick the iPod up on the way out or whatever, i only sync like twice a week and. and for The Little case i love that thing. In combination with my clear film protection case i have keeped my U2 video iPod mint:). The other stuff is yes just useless. Now if only you could use Firewire 800 with an iPod that would be cool
