Anybody who knows the iPhone 5S comes in gold yet doesn't know enough about iPhones to otherwise determine whether it's a 5S or an
older model.

I'm sure it's the case for plenty of people. The gold color confirms to those people that you have the latest and greatest iPhone, not a previous year's discounted model. The fact that you own a device that's so recent can also suggest that you update your phone regularly.

I am gong to somewhat disagree with this. I don't think the general public is as informed as you think. I have a black iPhone 5 was asked the other day if my phone was a 5 or 5S. I told them the easiest way to tell was the home button and if someone has a gold one. The reply I received was, "oh, I thought the they always came in gold" and "I didn't know the home button looks different." Mind you, this was a twenty-something and not someone you would think has been living under a rock.

How aspirational!

Go out of your way to impress people that don't really matter, but notice the little edge of gold spay paint on your phone!

Seriously. If they're smart, this "shortage" of those cheesy-looking gold ones is just a gimmick to drive demand and fake exclusivity.
Curious, have you actually seen one first-hand? Because I am looking at one now and at first I thought is was a silver one. The gold is so understated as to, well, not look like gold. Now, if by cheesy you mean Jarlsburg, then you might be close to accurate.

Finally something worth discussing in this thread.

How do we define a whole hole? You can always make it bigger. Does that mean there is no way for it to be whole?
A hole is incomplete, a tunnel is a complete hole. The width of a hole doesn't come in to play here. A grave is more of a dent than a hole.

Gold color reproduction

I would say the primary reason for this restriction is that the gold color is near impossible to accurately reproduce with cmyk inks on paper, and they are unable to do press checks for everyone that wants to use it. Good call on Apple's part to keep advertising of their products top notch. Matching grey and white using cmyk is no problem, so they need no special controls.

I guess you can say the same about Ferrari. Only making 3xx production cars instead of 3,xxx production cars. They want to keep as little on the street even though demand is there to make much more.
That would make sense if the "Ferrari" was just a Toyota in a different color.

You sure this isn't microsoft? Oh that's right it is apple. Only difference is there is no difference.

If gold is included in developer marketing materials, it makes it seem like less of a luxury item and more commonplace.
