Really? That blows. I could have sworn at WWDC they showed a Dark Mode Safari and Finder.

If Apple had planned Dark Mode properly, it would've been a "Theme Selector" instead of just toggling between normal and dark mode. Proper theme support would allow for deeper application integration. Oh well... maybe in 10 years...

They may have it ready earlier than expected. Either way, their whole continuity is broken without Yosemite. I'll be curious to see how well they work together later this year.

I'll probably jump on the band wagon at 10.10.5

It's been real entertainment to read these forums, seeing the angst and pain everyone suffers going through the .0 to .4 iterations.

I got burned with Leopard (10.5) - I installed it on day-one, and spent 4 hours with Apple Help line trying to salvage my photos from the dead Mac.

With Snow Leopard -- which everyone reveres as rock solid -- they forget that Snow Leopard, for me at least, didn't really get rock solid with Apple Mail until 10.6.6, and attained its legendary status for stability by 10.6.9. I installed SL at 10.6.4 and had some teething problems until it got to 10.6.6

So for Lion I waited it out till 10.7.4 and it was rather trouble free. I watched from the sidelines as people tore their hair out sorting out bugs in the .0 to .3 releases.

For Mountain Lion, same. I jumped in at 10.8.4 when things were fairly good. Right now, ML for me is rock solid.

For Mavericks 10.9, I never installed. Same as ever, there were claims it was stable from Gold Master, but the inevitable bugs in Apple Mail only became widespread when it went public. From reading reports, I'm not convinced Apple Mail in Mavericks 10.9.5 has been totally fixed for Gmail IMAP. Notionally, I would be willing to take a risk with Mavericks if its features were compelling, but there is nothing in Mavericks that attracts me.

I think I'll wait it out till 10.10.5 with Yosemite, and then come onboard. I think Yosemite looks cool.

Even if OSX is free, it costs me to upgrade because I have to pay for the latest update to VMWare Fusion, plus the possibility of having to re-install Windows 7 each time. So unless the OSX new features are really compelling, I tend to stay put for a while.

iOS 8.1 brings SMS handoff

Yay! I wonder how far out 8.1 is. Of the .1 updates that had Betas, how many did they have and how far apart were they?

It looks good but it will never replace Mac OSX

I still use Leopard on my Power Mac G5 and always thought it was one of the best looking versions of OS X out there. Its pretty much carried the same interface since then and it was time for a refresh. Just like iOS 7, I have liked the way Yosemite has looked from the beginning. Some people may disagree with me, but this is my take on it.

Seems prudent enough. You didn't mention iOS, so perhaps you don't have any devices that are running iOS, or you are also running an older version of iOS. In those cases none of the Continuity features would be available to you anyway.

There are reasons why so many computers are still running Windows XP after more than a decade. Despite the fact that it's no longer officially supported by Microsoft, it basically works.

PB4, iOS 8.0.2 iPhone 6 Plus. Texting doesn't work, haven't tried phone calls yet. I can pickup apps I'm using on my iPhone in the dock however.

iPhone 6, 8.0.2 with Yosemite GM (build 14A379a) I no-longer have the dock icons for anything on iPhone nor the other way around, the phone doesn't show mail/messages/safari etc for whatever's showing on the mac. That's true for both macs I upgraded.

What version is PB4?

I can't see a situation where I would need Continuity.

In my job, I work in the area of innovation. One of the tests for predicting the success of a product is whether there has been a prior long-felt need, or a longstanding problem. In this case, I've used iOS and Mac for years, and never felt the regular need to start a message on one device, and continue on another.

And where I do, it's already available. I type a message in Gmail IMAP, save it. I can continue working on it on another Mac in drafts. I already have all the continuity I need with IMAP and Cloud.

I have been running Final Cut Studio 3 (which includes FCP 7.0.3) successfully in Yosemite though there are a few interface hick-ups, particularly with the new fonts (try using Share). I was having problems with QuickTime 7 exports in the latest Yosemite until today's Gold Master update; if it really was broken it seems to have been resolved. No guarantees everything is solid but I have spent several hours working in most Studio apps. Note I have not done any capture from tape or output to tape (not in my day-to-day workflow) so no promises there.

Of note through most of the Yosemite versions Adobe Suite apps would crash when quitting (perhaps coincidence, maybe just crashing as they normally do). What I found incredible was Avid Media Composer 8.1.0 has been working for me in Yosemite. When is the last time Avid Media Composer worked in the current OS, never mind a Beta?

Your experience may vary. This is not my work computer but rather a personal MBP 17" early 2011. I installed Yosemite Beta on day 1.

I just updated to the Yosemite GM seed – FCP7 still running. I'm beginning to think it'll never die.

Yeah a lot of people still use it. it's gonna be a few years. Rendering isn't great, but if you're using proxies, it works fine. Old, tested workflows die hard.

Thank you all for your responses. Thrilled to know FCP 7 is still serviceable in Yosemite - at least for my needs. I don't need to capture from or export to tape, just work with past projects and create new ones for cutting already-digitized footage and then export using QuickTime conversion. Nothing fancy, just nuts and bolts. I've grown to love FCP X but 7 still serves a purpose - and will continue to for at least another year now, thank goodness.

OK, Yosemite. My ready is body.

you need to update to iOS 8.1 beta 1

----------

Continuity has been broken for me for the last few updates. I'm not getting and calls or texts on my Mac at all. Wonder why.

on 9/11 they posted a blog basically on their website explaining SMS Forwarding will be available as part of an update to iOS 8 in October----well yesterday we learned that update is iOS 8.1---so you to need to update to iOS 8.1 b1 if you want SMS Forwarding to work again. Idk why your handoff has not been working that never stopped working for me; only thing that stopped working was SMS Forwarding which is part of Continuity and that happened on 9/11. However with yesterday and todays releases of iOS 8.1 beta 1 and os x 10.10 gm candidate 1.0 SMS Forwarding has its own UI under message settings and as you use your devices your iPhone asks for codes or maybe vice versa one will ask for a code you enter it and your good to go.

Ahh that must be it. Phone calls aren't working either, but other continuity features are working. Guess I'll have to wait until the next iOS update.

proof I'm not talking out of my ass. IDK if your familiar with downloading developer updates but iOS 8.1 beta 1 is out and is out there for D/L in ways i will not speak of. Or you could do what we do and pay apple their $99 :apple::rolleyes:

Very familiar with dev updates. Had my iPhone 5 registered and running iOS 8 since beta 3, but haven't gotten my iPhone 6 registered. Will just wait for the official release. Thanks for answering my question though.

I was replying to the person who posted they had handoff working on 8.0.2 with PB4 because I'm now totally lost as to what build PB4 is in relation to the GM, the installation of which seems to have done for my handoff.

Also, Yosemite GM doesn't even work between two Macs which were happily handing off to each other yesterday, they're both updated to the GM and neither of them appear to work any more. Airdrop is working much better however, so something positive happened.

I can believe that 8.1 may be necessary to get iOS working, but I was trying to avoid that one for a few days if possible.

That seems a bit early for a late October release. I hope they don't rush Yosemite to calm people who did accidentally upgrade to iCloud Drive on their iOS devices.

If Apple had planned Dark Mode properly, it would've been a "Theme Selector" instead of just toggling between normal and dark mode. Proper theme support would allow for deeper application integration. Oh well... maybe in 10 years...

The wording originally was "theme" in the system preference, and in the earlier betas you could enable an incomplete version that styled the windows. They either ran out of time and are saving it for 10.11, or there was debate within Apple and the full theme lost.
