Nobody's forcing you to attend in person. The question is, "should there be an option to go live?"
I say, "why not? Choice is always good."
You two act as though allowing an in person option will raise the price of the online option. The more people pay to go live, the more likely the online option is to be free. Don't you want to be free, too?
I don't have a problem with choice. I merely stated my preference, not that it means anything.

Basically, why go to a live concert when you have the CD; or a theatre when you have the movie. While plenty of overlap, they serve qualitatively different functions.

The pre-recorded videos are well-paced and extremely polished to fit in as much content as possible. But that isn't the only function of WWDC. Having them live benefits the developers that attend with true face-time with each other and with Apple devs. It also adds more "authenticity" to the demos since they need the things to work to a very high level of confidence without any do-overs. I am glad they haven't been dedicating half the time to some 3rd party developer's tech demo though.
Exactly. My company attended a few (sadly not WWDC) events before Corona hit. The best part was making contacts with other fellow developers. Online's better than nothing but in person's better for those able to both pay and go.

"I think Apple should stick to the new video only format."

That specifically precludes the choice of anybody attending live.

I live and work in Japan and my company's sure not going to $$$$end me to California for WWDC so online's the only way I can watch it, but I hope they do go live for those who can attend. If they had a WWDC in Japan, my company would be among the first to sign up. We've been Apple developers for years.

If Apple cared about my preference, I made that known here. Said preference doesn't mean I am categorically against in person. I think you read way too much into my single post. It's not something I see a need to debate over post after post. If Apple goes back to the old way or offers both, fine. Either way, I don't see it as a big deal here on the forum.

It is all about the experience, something these virtual presentations do lack. It was fun once or twice, but got old really quick. So yeah, bring back the in person one.

Other than the Keynote, what exactly happens at WWDC. I guess it's basically a developer conference, and it's a great networking opportunity, but when they televise the keynote, there is more than just the developer audience. It's basically hardcore apple fans/users who also watch, just to see what is new. I think what I liked about the last two years was things felt like they were flowing at a great pace you didn't have applause like it was the State of the Union. They didn't do it much this year, but last year my favorite thing about the Keynote was just spotlighting Apple Park and showing it off. That's what I will miss if they go back to a crowd. I'm just wondering if they could do it hybrid style, where they just put the recorded Keynote online on the app and then still invite developers to come like in the afternoon on the Monday and then they can do their thing throughout the week.

I did realize after this last keynote that I probably shouldn't watch these events anymore though, because they do come across as boring. There are also so many youtubers (I follow Zollotech) who pretty much condense the Keynote to half hour segments and bring the important stuff.

In person is much better. These videos of the keynote are so hokey and bad. It takes me right out of looking the new tech coming out and focus on how dumb these "Portals" they jumping through are. Just my Opinion.

As others have said, they should do a Hybrid model, but definitely continue with slick video keynotes. Those who can attend will, the rest can have full access to the content online.

I still miss the old Macworld Expos, to be honest.

Tho I do understand that the giant conventions were a thing of the 1990s PC nerd culture, and very costly for the companies involved (especially for the small Devs)

I think the ones with Steve were much much better in my opinion.

Live is far better. These last couple of WWDCs have been very boring and far too scripted. Feels a lot more like a commercial you are watching rather than a developer conference.

Why wouldn’t you attend? If you don’t want to attend, someone can go in your place. We’re moving on.

Apple may not be sticking to the idea, but the fact they are wanting feedback means they will be intrested one day

"Now, as the world begins to see the light at the end of the tunnel, Apple is possibly planning to return to an in-person conference next year while still retaining some aspects of a digital format."

The tunnel is still dark.. don't worry about that.

I think Apple should stick to the new video only format. I think it works well and removes the expensive price tag for a ticket.
Yup, that and I find the actual sessions much better this way. More concise, straight to the point and better production values.

Sounds like you’re in the wrong business if you’re worried about travel expenses.
I'm not in a business. Believe it or not some people give their apps away for free with no IAP. The virtual WWDC let me take part in several lab sessions that were very helpful.

if Apple really cares about lowering carbon dioxide levels/global warming it should be virtual. No need to burn tons of fossil fuels when the same information can be delivered with the use of this modern internet technology we have.

it would be like still using pony express when the telegraph has been created and in use.

We needed them there this year to view their reactions to iOS15. lol.
Has apple been booed before at one of these things? I probably would have booed, and then commented on the report saying people that are refusing to go back to the office should be fired and replaced with actual developers who actually want to improve (collaboratively) the product they are working on. It seems like IOS 15 is showing inefficiency of the WFH model.
