The two aren't comparable because Macs are largely content (including software) creation devices while phones and tablets are aimed for content consumption.
An iPhone/iPad shouldn't be able to get problems associated with an open platform because they're everyday tools like a watch or a music player. You don't expect your watch to get a virus, right?
A Mac conversely needs to be open for people to create software as efficiently as possible on it, both to fuel the iOS ecosystem and the OS X one. And for people to be willing to create for iOS & OS X, people need to be able to use the tools as freely as possible, otherwise there would be less of a point. It needs to be a breeding ground where there are no artificial barriers applied to the productivity of their developers, IMHO. Happy developers are really freaking important to a company like Apple.

There's a difference between wanting options and suing over not having them on a given platform. I'd love to have a proper way to sideload iOS apps that can't make it into the app store, but I don't believe the restrictions are monopolistic given iOS's market share.

just because its always been that way I shocked so many sound mad at the idea of it being a more open source device, its fine to say buyers should know its closed and not complain later but nothing wrong with voicing your opinion that it would be better for everone(except apple) if it was not
Regulators should be reviewing wireless carriers and cable networks for monopolistic characteristics. Cant wait for T-Mobile to change up the game with their new model and I wish anyone would do the same for cable.
What if Apple or Microsoft do this to their computers? Not much difference in the situations. Microsoft have been unfairly (imo) sued for include IE with Windows. Why dont people sue Apple for including safari and when they denied other browsers on the iphone?
because 3rd party stores and sideloading are possible on those devices without hacks.
Apple should ask the court to request for enough safe-deposit from the lawyer so that he can pay for the whole cost (from Apples side and the courts side) when he loses this lawsuit.
Amazon's app store is an alternative to the google play app store.
What is the alternative to the Apple app store? There isnt one. Cydia does not count, jailbreaking should not be required just to install apps from 3rd parties. Jailbreaking exploits security vulnerabilities in the OS, who knows if the jailbreak autoinstalls some malicious software in the process.
Its my phone, MINE, NOT APPLE'S. I should be FREE to do what I want with MY phone.

That's because Macs and iOS were designed to be very different things that accomplish different goals. So of course they'll be different.
I like my TV and I like my refrigerator, but if they ever sell a TV that's cold inside I'd say that's stupid. But you would say I'd have to like a cold TV since I like my 'fridge cold?
Why on earth should we apply the same standards to everything? That would be the weird way of looking at it.
I think its more absurd that I can't play my PS3 games on the Xbox. Now I have to buy the same game twice!
What's the difference between what Apple has the 360 Arcade or Playstation Network? If I want to develop for those systems I MUST be a registered developer and more than likely a legal company. Oh they can also deny my game being published on that system. Oh users also only have one choice. If I don't like the price of the game on the Arcade store I can't go get it anywhere else. If we aren't allowed to use "go to Android" as an excuse then you can use "go to PS3 as an excuse." I don't see the difference at all, more than likely because their is no difference.
It would be nice to have a mode like they have on the Mac where you can toggle between two or more modes (locked to AppStore, signed Apps, wild west). I'm not sure Apple will go there since, as someone else stated, it's never been there for iOS (although I guess one could argue that it started with webapps and no AppStore). What will happen in the future as, in theory, the OS X and iOS lines blur and potentially become one? Will the options in OS X be dropped or will they come over to iOS?
I wonder if those bringing the suit have any evidence from app devs that, if they were allowed to sell outside the store, their prices would be cheaper? It seems unless you could show that, it would be a moot point? Just because I want something to be cheaper than what it is, doesn't mean it would actually happen. The app devs set the prices, Apple takes their distribution cut and that's that.

The internet is full of information... Consumers need to research which product best fits their needs and purchase a product based on that research.

iphone / ipads are basically computers though - Apple is the only reason there are limitations
I can't even think of anything a computer has that an iOS device doesn't..
filesystem, OS, cpu, video processor, HDD /SSD, etc..

And you would probably be the first one crying about your phone being compromised and try to blame Apple.
I don't see a case here, but we will see.
They don't respectively own 90+% of those markets (PCs, mobile devices) like Microsoft did (still does?). They have a small enough share to get away with the same tactic and not be abusing a monopoly position.
This is likely the best argument against forcing apple to open up. However, everyone knows PS3 and XBOX are not general computing devices. iPhones and iPads are general computing devices though and IMO should be treated like PCs.
I would think the ipad has enough market share to be deemed as similar to microsoft's position in the PC market.
