In an internal memo last week, obtained by MacRumors, Apple has indicated that it will assist its third-party repair partners around the world with COVID-19-related expenses, such as cleaning supplies and personal protective equipment.

All eligible Apple Authorized Service Providers will receive a subsidy from Apple by way of increased payouts for each completed repair. The subsidy is retroactive and the length it is offered will depend on stay-at-home guidelines in each country. Service providers are encouraged to contact their Apple representatives for more details.

To find an Apple Authorized Service Provider in your local area, visit the Get Support page on Apple's website and follow the steps to initiate a repair.

yeah but someone will spin it to be negative, you know they will.

They are only doing this because they need them. They couldn't care less about the people that work at those centers.
It's just Cook being the greedy person he is, as always.

😁

EDIT: TO ALL DISLIKERS OUT THERE! YOU DO REALIZE I WAS BEING SARCASTIC? SMILEY FACE IN THERE? ANYONE?

That makes absolutely no sense

Odd that they feel they need to incentivize a repair. Maybe 3rd party repair shops are bailing on Apple
or, maybe not. BTW, if you read the article, they are not "incentivizing" a repair, they are assisting their community in dealing with COVID. Much like they donated masks, and assembled face shields, and donated money, and ...... How is any of that a bad thing?

"they need them," but "couldn't care less" about them?

Makes PERFECT sense when you put it that way.

"Maybe" aliens are spreading COVID-19, and "maybe" drinking bleach really is a great way to treat an infection. Speculation is a wonderful thing. Facts are even better.

Very cool. I’m not always a fan of Cook, but this is a great move. Keeping communities healthy is good morally and good business.
It is but this just appears to be aimed at their business interests rather than the community. Still, they didn't need to do it so can't complain.

Good. But we need something to gripe about, right? Hmm…

How about Apple finally stop fighting the "right to repair" movement?
Normal people don’t have any such needs.

I have never responded to someone telling me “bro, I’m getting married” by saying “cool, my grandma just died”... you know, just so things aren’t too positive.
That’s super weird. Also... probably a sign of mental unhealth.

With regards to “right to repair”... 3rd parties clearly already can; that’s literally what this article is about- those people getting free money from Apple.
What other, more sleazy repair shops are after is “the right to quasi-repair Apple products with parts NOT certified to be good by Apple, that are almost certainly inferior & you cannot then assume will provide you the experience you are accustomed to- so that they can make more profit, passing on those garbage parts to the consumer... likely for the same price as genuine repair shops”. I’m good on that & VERY happy Apple is fighting the good fight on this front.

They have, at least for the iPhone:

Cupertino, California — Apple today announced a new repair program, offering customers additional options for the most common out-of-warranty iPhone repairs. Apple will provide more independent repair businesses — large or small — with the same genuine parts, tools, training, repair manuals and diagnostics as its Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs).

Apple will let any certified technician buy parts, and the certification is free as well.

I have a client whose iMac won't power on. We have no Apple Store open here (El Paso, TX) nor are there any authorized repair centers; closest is a six hour drive in Tucson. Apple won't send anyone to her house to effect the repair nor will they set up a pickup to send it off to a repair center. They won't swap her non-functioning machine for a new one (even though this one is six months old and covered by AppleCare). Essentially Apple has told her to pound sand until they re-open the Apple Store locally. When will that be? It's been about a month so far. Apparently, no one at Apple understands customer service nor initiative any more. Can you imagine buying AppleCare and Apple flipping you the bird? That's what happened here. eMailed Tim Cook...twice. No reply.

Omg, I’m SO surprised & outraged that Tim Cook didn’t personally reach out to you with regards to your client’s old broken down computer!
You are DEFINITELY deserving of a public apology... I can scarcely imagine your pain. Thank you for sharing.
Don’t worry- I in no way find you despicable & full of undeserved self-import.
I agree that your ridiculously minor inconvenience is wildly more important than any silly little virus & you’re correct... 11,000 employees & literally every single one lacks initiative and doesn’t understand customer service! That TOTALLY isn’t a crazy egocentric claim, based on well nearly nothing at all.
Have you tried a 3rd email to Tim- maybe the 1st two just weren’t worded properly?

/SO SO SO MUCH SARCASM

That’s great but also help more by ensuring that your Apple Phone Support people understand that shops like mine need to make a profit and pay their employees...so don’t give out your Out-Of-Warranty pricing then tell the customer we’re price gauging them because we refuse to work for ’literally’ nothing.
Had a dozen people ask why we added labor on top of their OOW Battery Replacements. AASPs don’t get compensated for OOW repairs. In what world do they think we’ll devote time on their devices for free?

Apple Stores are closed so there is nobody there that can come get your iMac. Also, authorized repair centers don’t get paid enough from your AppleCare to drive six hours to pick up your iMac nor would they want to risk getting sick working from within your house. Lastly, Apple is not known for shipping off desktop computers for repairs/replacements Since it would be rather easy for the Bad unit and/or good unit to be damaged during shipment.
