Leave my Amphetamine alone.
I've been using this for 8-9 years.

Interesting. On nearly all of these Apple vs. developer stories, after my first reading of the situation I come down on the side of the developer.

In this case, not so much.

And yet, it's the single example where Apple has immediately capitulated!
Expanding on this, now that I see others appear to agree with Apple's initial stance, I think the prominent Apple vs. developer examples have been based around an impression that Apple is exercising its power in an effort to secure a competitive advantage, be that through their commissions or restrictions.

In this case Apple's actions would have no adverse impact on the functionality or availability of the app provided the developer complied with their request to rename it.

It does seem sensible that Apple has some sort of editorial control over the content of their store, even in the absence of competitive stores. In fact we implicitly have an expectation of Apple to editorialise - we'd be shocked if illegal or indecent content appeared in the App Store overnight.

As such I cannot see the intrinsic issue with Apple requiring a developer to change an app's name where it is not to provide a competitive advantage.

The developer's framing of the issue in terms of freedom of expression seems weak in this context. It's a closed, private platform, and one where limits on freedom of expression beyond those in law have been commonplace and expected since its inception.

It sounds like someone lazy got a little too full of themselves and made bad assumptions. I'm glad that things got resolved since Amphetamine is one of the better "keep your Mac awake" apps out there.

this might be the laziest app ever.

go into the terminal and type "caffeinate -t 60"

there. your mac will definitely stay awake for 60 seconds. need an hour? -t 3600

need forever? no arguments.

it's not that hard. been using this for years and years.

You're right, this can be done in the terminal. However, I'm lazy and don't always like mucking around in the terminal to do something simple. Especially after a long day. Plus, the ability to set certain awakeness profiles based on the wireless network you connect to is a game-changer for me.

AI review likely caught it and flagged it for individual review. They sent the letter based on requirements. The Letter provided options for appeal which the developer followed and they were able to justify the branding.

I actually don’t have an opinion on this. I can see both sides.

From a personal branding perspective, it's probably not a great choice and the developer would be better off with a different name.

But strictly in terms of app store policy, I don't think Apple should go around deleting apps for names like this.

I don't think Caffeine has been updated in nearly 10 years hasn't it?
Generally, an app needs to be updated due to bugs or something like adding new features. The current (and free) version offers plenty of features for what it does, and it does what it does very well. Says a lot that an app can work so well for such a long time without needing an update.

Yeah I stopped using it after it became non-functional a few OSs ago.
I’ve never once had an issue with this app going from a 2010 MBP to a 2015 MBPr to an M1 MBP, and all OS’es between including most betas.

I ran a very large website that used Google Adsense. I remember dealing with similar issues. You could tell an AI/algorithm flagged something and then the human just looked around until they could find something to complain about.

This is the dark/unfortunate did of the walled garden. People are at the whim of apples review

Amphetamine is a bold name. I remember trying the app (many years back) for that very reason, stayed because of the fantastic UI that gave Caffeine.app (or whatever it was called, I can’t remember, wasn’t inspiring or memorable) a run for its money.

An abundance of maturity without any edge is drab.

A minion within the app review ranks wants a promotion, and tried to be zealous... That said, I’ve used the app’s competitor Wimoweh for a long time and haven’t heard whether there’s a takedown by Disney or Solomon Linda.

Yes BSD Unix to the rescue with a basic system service.

This is got to be the dumbest argument I have ever seen. First of all the app is free. It is also very nicely placed in the menu bar.

Saying this is like saying "Finder" is the laziest app ever. WHAT! You are using a GUI to move a file!

go into the terminal and type "mv source/file.txt destination/file.txt"

there. the file is moved. Need to move all the text files? "mv source/*.txt destination/*.txt"

it's not that hard. been using this for years and years. Why isn't everyone as smart as me!

creating a GUI for a command line tool that only does what the command line tool does is lazy. Learn to use zsh, write a script or use Applescript or publish a service that works within Apple's security constructs and create work flows with time. That would be a usefulness for a GUI.
