I bought two MacBooks on the 4th July. One was for my wife, and was not opened until the 30th July. It was then activated on the 1st August as we went away for two days. On the 27th October, tried to start the year free trial and were only offered 7 days. After contacting Apple support, I was told the 3 months (actually 90 days) starts from the day of purchase, and that I could not have the offer as that time had passed. I told them that according to both their website, and the terms and conditions (which ironically they sent me and asked me to read) it says from the day of ACTIVATION/setup not purchase, and they are not the same date. I bought them on Apple.com on the 4th, they were not even delivered until the 9th. Long story short, he spoke to his manager who contacts me and refereed it to another team blah blah and the final answer was according to them the date the computer was setup was out of the time limit (they would not tell me when) and the answer was a firm “no”. Very surprised by their attitude. Will probably still get the new one subscription anyway as I am currently paying both iCloud and Music.
Sorry, but I actually side with Apple here.
it’s from the time of purchase. The second that that MacBook was delivered, it goes from there. Especially if you got AppleCare for it. The AppleCare gets activated the second that it’s delivered, not the second that you open it and start using it.
if the free trial and AppleCare only started when you activated the MacBook, that would be so easy to hack. you could just put your Mac into recovery mode every couple months, erase the internal hard drive, and reinstall the operating system, and get an extra couple months of free Apple TV+. That’s not how that works.
The only time that I would see this being a problem is if you bought someone a Christmas gift a few months early, and they didn’t open it until Christmas.
but my main question is, why on earth did you buy a MacBook on July 4, and not open it until August 1? that’s literally one of the stupidest things you could ever do. That MacBook could’ve been defective. It could’ve came broken. their could’ve been an assortment of problems, and you would’ve been out of the 14 day return window.
people, unless you’re buying a gift for someone that has to be opened on a certain day, please don’t wait to open your new electronics until they can’t be returned. Open them the day that they deliver, and make sure that everything is working perfectly. And activate everything on the day that it’s delivered, so you don’t miss out on free trials, warranty programs, and important security and software updates.
i’ve heard of horror stories of people getting broken electronics. Someone I know got a Google pixel three with no operating system on it. Another person got an Apple Watch with a broken screen. another person got a HomePod that came bricked.
Please don’t be stupid.
and if you’re buying an expensive computer or electronic device for someone as a gift, make sure that you give them the receipt, or any info relating to the device just in case it’s defective when they open it.
