So, judging from the experiences here, it's kind of a gamble whether you receive a locked or unlocked "device only" device?

Well, if you test it as soon as you get it home, then if it's locked, just return it.

Bizarre that the ones sold in store are locked but online they are unlocked.

I think so. Besides, AT&T could have requested Apple to lock those device only phones.

I'd like to get one of these (not real crazy about my Android phone), but as a GoPhone customer... I will wait a few months until I've heard some 4S success stories from other GoPhone Guinea Pigs. :D

I'm aware there are a lot of 3GS GoPhoners; but I could see AT&T getting more worked up about 4S users than people on several-year-old phones.
I confirm that the unlocked iPhone 4S works fine with the AT&T GoPhone SIM. I read these instructions, but the part that was most relevant to me was the part on the APN changer.

I already had a GoPhone SIM with some credit that I was occasionally using on a Motorola dumb phone that T-Mobile USA unlocked a couple of years ago.

The GoPhone SIM will tether cellular data to a Mac using the fabulous (but discontinued) Handy Light app (which I picked up at $0.99 during the app's short and exciting life in the App Store). It's a pricey way to access the Internet though. :D

You should be able to use the Handy Light Pro app (which is much more spendy at $9.99). Still that's a one-time charge and cheaper than most carriers' monthly tethering fees.

I'm still toying with the idea of getting a Straight Talk SIM (via the purchase of a refurb Nokia E71). No rush though, I'm pleased that the iPhone works with GoPhone.

iPhone 4S unlocked

I travel a lot and want to use the unlocked iPhone with different SIM cards in different countries - I can get local pay as you go. Then when back home use it with the ATT contract. Is this possible, to change SIM cards back and forth?
someone told me that it gets locked into the carrier you insert the first SIM card...this does not make sense. I need this for frequent traveling. Help please!!

If you buy an unlocked unit, it won't lock. If you but a locked unit, it will lock on activation. If you buy for use on a CDMA carrier, the carrier will decide if it is internationally unlocked or not.
