I have been waiting for the refurbished 2019 iMacs to show up. With the drop in SSD prices, the refurbished models are not so great a deal. I was looking at a new i5 3.7 GHz with 8 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD that now comes to $2599. Adding 32 GB (2x16 GB) from Macsales ($185), the total price came to $2784. A similar refurbished model (i5 3.7 GHz 32 GB RAM 1 TB) is listed at $2719, a savings of $65. If I wanted to get the wireless extended/numeric keyboard. the resulting difference would drop to $34. I will wait until later in the year to see if the refurbished prices drop to reflect the lower upgrade costs to SSD.

"far superior to digital music" Thats debatable!

The format of the digital file as well as the music source come to play here. As an example Neil Young Archives are digital and far superior than the original CD cuts.

In either case a CD or file still needs to be converted from the digital format to the analog form the speaker needs. The quality of the DAC then impacts either. Unlike a clean phonograph disk which is a direct analog cut of the music from the master tapes. Be aware more modern cuts are from digital sources!

And the quality of your amp & speakers also come to play here as well.

Many music stores have closed where I live, many that still exists have cut their collection down. I now need to go to used stores to find the music I like and I often get a Phonograph Vs CD. For either I convert them to a file as I don't want to wear the originals from all of the playing. And I have a good rig to convert them over.
We are just not going to come to an agreement on this.
Meanwhile, the cost savings of eliminating the drive is not passed to us.

I have two iMac's - the original 2011 21.5 inch with an internal 500 gig Samsung Evo SSD which I fitted a couple of years ago. I now have a brand new i5 27 inch 5K iMac with the 2 TB fusion drive. To be perfectly honest I think the fusion drive does a pretty good job and I'm not sorry I opted for this option.

Yes comparing the two machines is like comparing Apples with Oranges. However, the newer fusion drive iMac does return better scores with black magic than the Sammy Evo, especially the read speeds which are significantly faster.

That I can agree to :) The cost of the optical drive was not rolled into a savings for us.
