Apple today began selling refurbished second-generation AirPods Pro with a USB-C charging case on its online store in the U.S. for $209, compared to $249 brand new.

Apple updated the AirPods Pro with a USB-C charging case in September 2023. Other changes at the time included improved IP54-rated dust resistance for both the earbuds and the case, and lossless audio with Apple's Vision Pro headset.

Apple says all of its refurbished products undergo "full functionality testing" and are "put through a thorough cleaning process and inspection."

Keep in mind that Amazon is currently selling brand new second-generation AirPods Pro with a USB-C charging case for $189.99 in the U.S., which is a much better deal than Apple's refurbished store is offering for the earbuds.

who would buy this while they can get new one from other stores at the same price?

Talking of this, what happens if you go to the store to try them on? Do they just wipe them down with a sanitising tissue or something? What about 14 day returns - sold as refurbs?
I believe so. They also go the Apple Care route. When you get new AirPods via Apple Care you get refurbished APP’s.

It's one of those products I just refuse to do anything but new

I can't get over the "in someones ear" nature of it
For the AirPods Pro it's not so bad. My AirPods 3 a are full of ear wax and stuff, but my Pros look pristine, because they don't actually sit inside the ear, just the silicone tips. With new silicone tips, I'd consider them in principle.

How does refurbishing the unrepairable AirPods work? I thought all refurbished devices came with new batteries - I suppose this differs for the AirPods?
That seems like a weird policy anyway. Someone buys a brand new iPhone and changes their mind on day 2 and returns it. Then Apple pull it apart and replace the battery?

If a product is often on sale on another retailer’s web site, then that’s clearly a better option. I doubt they’d be replacing the batteries on these for refurb. And anyway eeewww…

In terms of the refurb store, there is sometimes a golden egg to be found - particularly a month or so after a new MacBook Pro launch. I picked up an £800 ($1,000) discount on a MacBook Pro that had just one battery cycle. Thanks to the YouTube reviewer that probably returned the 96gb memory MacBook Pro Max. 😁

How do they even refurbish them? They're basically impossible to open. I guess they could put the guts and a new battery in new plastic... Or it's just a lie, and they're straight out of somebody's ears to you.
Apple has the necessary tools, for sure.

New ones could be had with discount from some retailers. Much better to buy those instead of the refurbished ones from Apple.

Did you know that the AirPods you get as warranty replacements are refurbished? Refurbished Apple products are often more reliable than new ones because they have been thoroughly validated andtested. Apple replaces all external components and batteries in refurbished AirPods, so the only parts that are reused are internal components.

While you might still prefer to buy new AirPods at retail or find better deals on Amazon, concerns about sanitation are unwarranted

For real?

Apple’s refurbished products are indistinguishable from New, meaning there cleaning process is so good that you can’t tell the difference. On the AirPods they probably put a whole new white AirPod casing on them and of course they replace the battery 🔋

What they really need to invent is a charging case that somehow also cleans the grease off your AirPods. Some of us get a little greasy after a few hours of wearing these even if we totally dry our ears first. Have to carry a little pack of tissues on me to wipe them down before putting them in the case, otherwise the whole thing would be filthy and probably unsanitary by now.

I wish I could find even one decent discount in the UK from an established outlet with acceptable reputation. Every appreciably lower price has been from a company with questionable reviews.

The best I can find is £219 from EE Store (rather than £229 from Apple). Currently almost all retailers are offering at full price - with some even adding postage on top!

Apple has a polishing cloth solution that works really well.

they are probably only reusing internal parts like pcbs, speaker, ribbon cables, charging port/charging coil, etc.

they'll have completely new silicone tips, shells, casing, battery.

It's odd that they mention it with refurbed iPhone's and iPad's and yet, no mention of it with a device that has a tiny battery. Unless Apple actually states it, I am not going to speculate that they change out the battery or casing.
