it should be mentioned that almost EVERY apple refurbished product includes a new battery and a new outer casing.

Apple is basically "refurbishing" the internal chip driving the apple pencil.

I still think it's over priced, but every penny counts. Refurbished items are always a great deal. I've done some research and spoken to multiple Apple employees, apparently most refurbished items never make it to the original owner, usually they are orders canceled while the product is still in transit.

And a few of those don't charge tax, which negates any savings from Apple refurbished.

You can get them new-in-box via eBay, when the run that regular $15 off $75 special/promo. I paid ~$79 for mine last week via eBay.

Nice! I meant to say that i would not pay $85 for refurbished, but I'll take $85 or less for new too.

Thanks for sharing that info.

Me too. This is a glued-together, disposable gadget, a manufacturing "innovation" Apple seems to have perfected of late. There is no way they can move these around multiple times, inspect, refurb, test and ship, and then sell them again for $80. Apple is losing money, their decision of course, but why?

The manufacturing cost is probably close to $5 so it's still profitable after several refurb cycles even with price reduction.

Any chance the UK could have these sometime. We are already screwed due to the exchange rate.

The new release price here was £79, then increased to £99, because of exchange rate increases.

Presumably Apple would just go and 'discount' the refurbs back to the old £79 new price. :-(

If the battery shows non-negligible signs of deterioration, they’ll replace it.

Will they? So if I buy a refurbished pen, it turns out the previous owner exposed it to heat, and the lithium cells only get about 60% of their rated service life, Apple will replace the pencil several years after I purchase it? (since such issues may not show themselves for the first year)

How would that work with the pencil?

I have bought many refurbished Apple products over the years, and I have never been disappointed. The way I look at it, if you were going to buy the item anyways, you might as well save some cash and get a refurbished model.

I purchased Apple refurbished Macs, iPods, ATVs, and Airports to name a few thing.

Out of the box, you would never know that it was refurbished.

Same. Bought a refurb MBP and iPad and both came completely new looking and perform as good as a new product. Same with my Canon 70D, SIGMA 18-35mm art lens, and Dell 4K monitor sold open box via Amazon. All refurb products I've bought were had at great price, all came in looking brand new and have been work horses with 0 problems.

If it's a reputable company selling the refurb itself then I buy with total faith and haven't been disappointed yet...6 years and going.

Apple need to come out with a version 2 to fix all the flaws. Common complaints are the cheap plastic, need softer tips to reduce tapping noise on display, tendency to roll off the table since it doesn't have flat sides like a real pencil, fragility, no magnetic attachment, short battery life, awkward charging, no shortcut buttons, etc. For the price it should be more premium like the Surface Pen. And, for a refurb it should be at least 40% off.

I'd also like it to be compatible with Trackpads and iPhones, at least with the upcoming flagship iPhone. I'm kinda worried that if I buy one now, there'll be a gen 2 version coming with the new iPhone, but if I don't, it won't.

Is the latency different when it has been refurbished?
Don't be fooled by Apple that the refurbished is not new. That $14 savings is nothing really this is just to encourage more people will buy the Pencil. I'm sure those refurbished the box is damaged and not ideal for Apple Store display. Apple has a warranty for their refurbished products too. I doubt it!

Yep. Would be curious as well. On MacBooks they do replace the battery – this and the standard warranty (and even apple care if you choose) makes refurbished items a lot better deals than 3rd party "pre-loved" offerings.

I wonder if there's a way to measure the Pencil's battery performance without taking it apart?

The iPad lets you check pencil battery level.

who comes out winning in this "deal"
:apple:

well is not really a deal, this is armed robbery
:mad::D

this is like buying a pair of Jordan's for 150, used them for a year, play a few times with them
then sell them for 140
WTF apple
by that time they cost around 130 brand new

please Tim go away fast

if it cost 99 brand new and is refurbished it should cost 69
;)o_O:)

Refurbished with tax = $92.01

Online retailer (no tax in my state and free shipping) = $95

exactly, the funny thing is that they can get some people but they can't get you or me because we are smarter than that :D

3 bucks saving apple really

If they ever release one of these with an on button for occasional users, I'll buy one. I had one for a while, but every time I came to use it, it was drained.

No, they’d almost certainly be able to catch the battery degradation before it ever met your hands. Heat would degrade the battery to some extent, even within the first year.

Apple refurbs are made to be as good as new, just typically with less swanky packaging and possibly minor wear and tear on the device. That was the difference for my iMac, which is still going strong after 2.5 years, except for a minor cosmetic issue on top that’s more tangible than visible and its unprinted box.

But I seldom touch the top, so...

I've found the same thing with mine.
I did hear one interesting theory though, which I haven't really confirmed. I was told that the Apple Pencil doesn't go into a "sleep mode" where it saves power if it's in close enough proximity to the iPad screen. That means, those Apple Pencil holders that let you attach it to the edge or top of your case could be causing the battery to run down quickly. (I have a "loop" type adhesive pen holder I attached to my keyboard cover, so I suppose that could explain part of my problem.)

I had a few refurbished Apple products and they all failed at some point. Don't forget some extremely small and complex components have a limited lifetime, especially in such a small package.

I too have bought apple refurbished products and they've all been brand new. I haven't had one product fail prematurely.

pretty sure they don't replace the battery, just hook it up to a diag and read the number of charge cycles and give it a pass if under some values on a spec sheet somewhere then take a soft cloth and wipe it off and throw it in a new box, that's it. if your lucky you get one no one even used.

How? Are they going to charge and discharge each refurbished pencil 20+ times? (further increasing wear, costing a lot of time + energy.) Damage to LiCo's due to improper storage and usage (and even manufacturing) are not always apparent until later in the service life.

I am a HUGE fan of and advocate for Apple refurbished products. I have decade old refurbished Macs that still work that I saved hundreds on versus new. But with this pen, I am skeptical. The battery is not easy to replace (arguably not even possible.) The savings are comically minimal considering how, at the same percentage savings, iPhones get brand new outer casings and batteries!

And, to my knowledge, there is no way for the User to pull diagnostic data from this specific battery.
