For the consumer/prosumer the ASD is the complete opposite of what they want, they want an iMac, an all in one.

Do they? Or do some of those people just want a decent desktop Mac without spending much over $2k (a perfectly reasonable desire)? If the Studio started at $1500 and the 5K display cost $700, would that change your mind at all?

Honestly that’s an interesting question. For me I want the all in one. I have no interest in an ASD + a studio/mini.

Just speculation but if people wanted a more affordable Mac they would go with a Mac mini and any other monitor over the ASD.

It's "dead" because parts price have not gone down.

Same reason why the 6 year rumor of an OLED iPad has been floating for so long as the price point & tech requirements have not reached Apple's standards.

Same reason why no iPhone fold.

Same reason why 2017 iPhone X took years to get AMOLED display when Android bragged about it for nearly a decade. Apple did not want to deal with bad press relating to burn-in.

What's a "27" 5K SD" and where did you get $1599? My linked base model 2020 iMac 27" is $1799.

I had to place links as it is difficult to have an adult conversation without supporting citations.

This is Apple. They get great prices on parts.

They aren't a victim of anything but thier own greedy hubris. If they could sell MacBook pro and parts It definitely would.

Why sell you a 27-in iMac when they can sell you a $1,600 monitor plus a $1,500+++ mini desktop plus a keyboard plus a mouse plus a mouse pad plus AppleCare.

They are laughing at their customers as usual. I paid $3,000 - for my MacBook pro 14 just to have a decent spec for my work. And I was so pissed I had to tell a Apple manager at the store. He said he understood. $3,000 for this damn thing. Works great don't get me wrong, but Apple's prices are ridiculous.

Speaking only for myself I buy their hardware and that's it - I don't get any other services from these robber barons. If they're going to rob me they're only going to rob me once. Diversifying my vendor chain is great. I even got screwed using their notes app when Apple ID login had errors for like a year and wiped out a year's worth of notes.

TLDR. Apple is not a victim they can do what they want. They're robbing all of us. And just remember they said their 8 gig of RAM is just as good as 16 GB of RAM. It's special Apple RAM with apples in it.

Pride/fall.

In fairness to Apple & the other PC OEMs shipment of desktops & laptops the worldwide have largely stagnated for over a dozen years largely due to the iPhone & Android.

Since 2010 Apple & Intel observed lengthening computer replacement cycles.

This is from the 3 year cycle of the 80s, 90s & 00s to 4 years or more for Mac and 5-6 or more years for PCs.

So these computer companies need to extract better margins with their largely unchanging demand for their goods.

This started with Apple as soon as they ceased publishing shipment numbers & instead shows profits in $ billions.

As for the discontinuation of the iMac 27" it has more to do with iMac screen models looking weird.

Imagine back in 2021 Apple releasing the $1299 iMac 24" 4.5K M1 with a $1799 iMac 27" 5K M1.

Many will point as to why there is a $500 diff for the new 24" 4.5K screen vs the over a decade-old 27" 5K screen?

Product differentiation would be difficult.

Logically speaking the "big" iMac should be based on the screen spec of 32" 6K based on the 2019 Pro Display XDR.

Alas... the display parts for the 32" 5K isn't $500 more but nearly $5,000 more.

After 5 years it is my hope that next gen 32" 5K display parts will be nearer to $500.

I've been putting up with 22nm Intel chip for over 11 years. I want to feel that sweet sweet 3nm Mac chip by as late as October's M4 launch.

I might even spring for a M4 Pro so I don't have to BTO 18GB RAM & 512GB SSD. If I am spending may go with M4 Max so I dont have to BTO 36GB RAM & 1TB SSD.

Clearly there's not enough difference between a 24" and 27" iMac, in both size and price, to sell both. The 24" model, being exactly in between the old 21" and 27" models, was obviously intended to rationalise the iMac line into a single model.

I personally don't see Apple releasing a 32" iMac, but if they did, it wouldn't need to use the same HDR FALD panel as the XDR display, and could just use a regular LED backlight. It would still need to be 6K, though. This is the downside to Apple's consistent 220ppi for all Mac displays - large displays need to have extremely high resolutions.

A 32" 6K HDR600 panel would be a custom order just for Macs, so would be expensive, and Apple would only be able to spread the costs over the sales of high-end iMacs. A 32" 6K iMac, presumably with at least an M3 Pro chip, would likely be over $3000; it would not be a volume seller, reducing the potential for economies of scale.

Bear in mind that once people saw the 32" 6K iMac, it would make the 27" 5K Studio Display less exciting; they would be clamouring for a standalone 6K Studio Display. Given Apple has priced the 27" model at $1600 (base), the 32" would start at, what, $2200? The iMac would need to be substantially more than that, given it would essentially have a mini Pro inside it too.

After 5 years it is my hope that next gen 32" 5K display parts will be nearer to $500.

Apple would never do a 32" 5K screen, as it wouldn't be 'Retina'. Given the economies of scale in the mainstream PC market, though, you could buy a 32" 4K screen for that today. For a little more, you could get one with 144Hz, DCI-P3 etc. They'd even throw in multiple inputs and a height-adjustable stand :) Sure, it wouldn't be quite as crisp, but there's diminishing returns to this stuff. I'm typing this on a 27" 4K screen connected to a MBP, and it looks great.

Typo.... 32" 6K. :)
