There are many reasons why people will still buy an Intel Mac.

#1) They've been satisfied with their past Intel Macs and don't keep up with tech so they don't know anything about Apple's M1 processors.

#2) They are running a business and just buy Macs to get the job done and are not concerned about the fastest processors or the latest specs.

#3) Price

#4) They may not be comfortable with the latest tech (M1) and prefer to continue to buy what works until good time has passed and then they may consider an M-series Mac on the next upgrade.

You need to get that out of your head that people buy Intel Macs just to run Windows Bootcamp. I've been buying Intel Macs since they first came out to run my business on them and have never installed Windows.
Keep in mind the majority of Apple's customers are the average consumer and not a developer who uses VM's to code. They are in the minority.
do you have a essential specific app that only works for intel and not the m1?

Core i9 macs at M1 prices are worth it, other than that, they are overpriced considering the OS will be discontinued on them before the usual amount of time one keeps a Mac up and running. As all your must have apps go M1 only on their features the last to buy intel will not get their moneys worth if they pay full retail for them.
LOL what?? Maybe you don't know but there are people with 2013 MacBooks that are natively running Big Sur.

I have zero desire to buy an intel mac of any sort. I’m happy just using my iPad for now. But I realize I’m a special case that has no need for a file system.

I hope you realize there's a much bigger difference between running applications on the iPad vs. a Mac. The Mac has much more professional full applications on it. Many of the needed applications are not even available for iPad. Plus it's still more of a consumption than a creation device so it's not just a file system difference.

Reason #5: You need something now, not later in 2021.

I usually buy refurb so I can get the BTO config that I want, but went with a standard config on sale at Costco to replace my ailing 2015 iMac.

Doesn’t mean it’s the right answer for others but it will serve its purpose for next several years, at which time I’ll likely replace it with the latest and greatest AS iMac.

I think the 1st gen MacBook Air and Pro have proven to be amazing. Also to be honest unless the iMac has gone through a complete redesign it's really not "1st Gen" since it's only a change in processors. You're not really being a guinea pig with a new processor as opposed to redesign hardware. I would say go for it.
I am now streaming a euro football game on my macbook air 2010 i3 to a hdmi Tv through a 2007 apple airport without any delay or buffering. These devices last the test of time!

lol that’s an outdated view of the iPad. The current iPads can be used for many more things than just consuming content. You can create content on iPads.

Please read my post before replying. You didn't read it at all. I SAID iPads are more of a consumption device than a creation device. I never said they weren't for content creation. And what I said is 100% true. They are still limited.

Some of us don’t have a choice. I’ve got to run Windows in a VM. I hope at some point somebody will have a solution. I’d love to buy an M1 iMac when my 27” 2017 iMac is done and I did snap up an early 2020 Intel MacBook Air because I needed a laptop so I’ll be able to run Windows on a VM with it for years to come but there’s less value to me in a Mac if it can’t run Windows. If there is no solution I’ll have to buy a Windows desktop instead so that win I eventually replace the MacBook Air I can remote into it with a secure remote solution for access to Windows.

Parallels is making progress on the Windows 10 ARM implementation, and Microsoft is making progress on the x64 emulation inside that. Might not work for all applications, but it's been really great for my usage on my M1 MacBook Air. Anyone that needs Windows in a VM for their work should absolutely stick with the Intel Macs for a while.

Then you're buying the wrong computer in the first place. You should be only using a Windows machine. Apparently that has a great deal more value to you.

I have dual booted windows on my Mac for ten years and appreciated the ability to do so. So, I am in the same boat. While owning a Mac has been great (I just retired a late 2011 MBP), if it doesn't provide the ulity, yes, a Windows machine will mean more to me. I don't think it's weird wanting something you've had support for over a decade to continue....

As MS works on ARM versions of their OS, I am hoping we eventually get dual boot. Otherwise, it's been a nice ride. :/

they might sell more if they actually linked these on their 'refurbished' site. I've been going there for the last few weeks, filtering by 'release year', and there's no iMacs that ever come up. The article links to a 2020 refurb iMac - and *that* page links to "browse all".... but the original linked-to item is nowhere to be found.

I am fully aware of the differences but I’m also full aware of how I use my devices. The iPad is my go to unless I’m doing spreadsheets which are not very often and my workplace provides a triple screen desktop for that part of my job. I may use it 2 x per week. I use my iPad multiple times per day for work.

Thanks for the clarification but your earlier post suggested that the only reason why anyone would need a Mac instead of an iPad is if they needed a file system, and it's so much more than that.
